6 Mindful Music Moments Daily Classical Music and Mindfulness for your students! The Cleveland Orchestra invites your school to participate in Mindful Music Moments, a program that marries access to classical music, technology, and mindfulness (a concept trending heavily with many school administrators). This program has proven effective for pre-k through grade 12 students in creating a ritual to calm and focus before the school day begins. The daily 4 minute routine exposes your students to a classical music piece coupled with mindfulness techniques delivered over the morning announcements in schools. Teachers, administrators and students have reported that Mindful Music Moments provides tangible tools for mental and emotional well-being, and a deeper appreciation of classical music. WHY SCHOOLS PARTICIPATE: To teach and strengthen mindfulness, and introduce different calming techniques to students To establish a focused environment for learning so students can start the day in a positive way To improve learning and behaviors To decrease anxiety in students To increase exposure to classical music This program is easy to use. All of the work is done for you! 8 Education Concerts Beethoven & Prometheus: A Hero s Journey 6 For The Cleveland Orchestra s 100 th Season, Music Director Franz Welser-Möst has created The Prometheus Project, designed to provide a new lens through which to explore the music of Beethoven, both for adults (in our evening concerts) and young people (in our Education Concerts). The Prometheus Project connects Prometheus, a Titan of Greek Mythology, and Beethoven, a titan of classical music. They are bound together in spirit by a rebellious nature, a deep love of humankind, and their ability to overcome great obstacles to use their individual gifts to change the world. Prometheus broke all the rules and defied Zeus by giving humans the precious gift of fire. Metaphorically, this ability to create and control fire can be seen as an essential part of giving independence and self-determination to humanity, and helping pave a means to civilization (cooking, heating, creating tools, etc.) Thus Prometheus provided the spark that gave rise to civilization, and empowered humans to fight for justice, individual freedoms, and the greater good. Beethoven broke rules too musically and otherwise. He was an innovator, widening the scope of sonata, symphony, concerto and quartet forms, and combining vocals and instruments in a new way. He overcame many challenges in his personal life (e.g., raised by a single alcoholic, abusive parent, progressive deafness) to become one of the world s greatest composers. Beethoven was an inquisitive man raised in the Enlightenment, which directly affected the music he wrote. Where Prometheus gave fire to humans, Beethoven gave his music, using it to express his passionate belief in justice, equality, the right to human dignity, and the goodness of humanity. Student Work Featured in Education Concerts A goal for the Beethoven & Prometheus: A Hero s Journey Education Concerts, is for students to recognize their own potential to create a better world and how the actions of one individual can make a difference. In spring, 2017, Orchestra musicians and staff worked with students and teachers at the Cleveland School of the Arts (CSA) to explore the challenges, and accomplishments of Beethoven and Prometheus, and the ways they served the greater good. Using artistic mediums (Visual and Performing Arts), and engaging core curriculum (English/Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies), and using Joseph Campbell s classic Hero s Journey framework, students were challenged to create work that connected to personal narratives, personal heroes, and the ways in which they envision using their own gifts to shape their future world. Select CSA student projects will be projected onto a large screen behind the Orchestra, integrating them into Beethoven & Prometheus: A Hero s Journey Education Concerts.
9 Education Concerts Grades 4-8 November 8 & 10, 2017 Teacher Workshop Tuesday, October 10, :30-6:30 pm Beethoven & Prometheus: A Hero s Journey The Cleveland Orchestra Vinay Parameswaran, conductor Severance Hall VINAY PARAMESWARAN This first-ever, multi-media Cleveland Orchestra Education Concert, explores a unique intersection between mythology and music, examining the connection between Prometheus, a Titan of Greek Mythology, and Beethoven, a titan of classical music. Bound in spirit by their creativity, rebellious nature, and a deep love of humankind, Beethoven and Prometheus both overcame great obstacles and used their individual gifts to create a better world. These concerts will feature movements from some of Beethoven s most important symphonies accompanied by the creative output (visual art, dance, language arts and more) of students from the Cleveland School of the Arts (projected on a large screen behind the Orchestra) who were deeply engaged with Orchestra musicians last spring in an interdisciplinary Prometheus Project curriculum. BEETHOVEN Overture to The Creatures of Prometheus Symphony No. 5, Movement 4: Allegro Symphony No. 1, Movement 2: Andante cantabile con moto Symphony No. 5, Movement 1: Allegro con brio Symphony No. 7, Movement 1: Poco sostenuto Vivace All artists and programs are subject to change. 7

The repertoire includes music directly related to the life of Dr. King, as well as music symbolic of peaceful revolution from other periods in history, demonstrating the timeless nature of the need for social justice and unity. Cortège There is a Balm in Gilead Take My Hand, Precious Lord Overture to Fidelío Giggling Rapids (from The River) The Promise of Living Finale from Symphony No. 5 ( Reformation ) The Unanswered Question We Shall Overcome Largo (excerpt) from Symphony No. 9 ( From the New World ) 8 All artists and programs are subject to change.
