As a friendship develops between longtime resident John Dodge and new arrival Mary Swanson, the lives of the inhabitants of Middletown intersect in strange and poignant ways in a journey that takes them from the local library to outer space and points between. Featured soloist Denise Plaza-Martin, oboist with the Rhode Island Philharmonic and adjunct faculty member of music at Rhode Island College, performs Mozart s Oboe Concerto in C Major. The plus in the concert s title refers to Canaveral, a brand-new work for winds by composer James Bohn. Sunday, Oct. 15 Music: RIC Autumn Choral Concert RIC Concert Chorus, Chamber Singers and Women s Chorus Teresa Coffman, conductor Philip Martorella, pianist and assistant conductor 3 p.m. All Saints Memorial Church, 674 Westminster St., Providence, RI (offerings accepted)

4 This light concert features RIC s three choral ensembles performing works by important composers throughout Western music history as well as nontraditional, lesser-known composers and pieces. Tuesday, Oct. 17 Music: Vienna s Musical Heritage RIC Symphony Orchestra Alexey Shabalin, conductor RIC students, faculty, and staff (limit 2 per ID) free The Viennese musical tradition has continued for centuries, from one great composer to the next from Mozart to Beethoven, from Beethoven to Schubert and onward far into the 20 th century. The first half of this concert features Mozart s iconic Sinfonia Concertante, with RIC faculty members John Sumerlin (violin) and Susan Culpo (viola) as soloists. During the second half, a variety of Viennese musical styles by Schubert, Schoenberg and Johann Strauss are presented. Friday, Oct. 20 Dance: Festival of South African Dance featuring the Gumboots and Pantsula Dance Companies Performing Arts Series General admission $35 Seniors (62+, limit 1 per ID) $30 RIC alumni, faculty and staff (limit 2 per ID) $20 Non-RIC students/children (limit 1 per ID) $15 RIC students (limit 2 per ID) free Purchase your tickets at Direct from South Africa, this ensemble of 20 dancers and musicians present a unique South African story. The Gumboots performance is a tale of rural African men who find a way to survive in the goldmines of Johannesburg. The Pantsula dancers showcase South Africa s vibrant contemporary culture through their revolutionary street dance. Oct Dance: Annual K-12 Mini Dance Concert Series RIC Dance Company 10 a.m. This 45-minute informational dance concert is offered free to K-12 students from Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

6 of Maria Anna (Nannerl) Mozart, the sister of Amadeus prodigy, virtuoso and composer, who performed with her brother, to equal acclaim. The play is based on facts, stories and lines pulled directly from the Mozart family s humorous and heartbreaking letters. Nov and Theatre: Leading Ladies by Ken Ludwig RIC Mainstage Theatre Patricia Hawkridge, director Nov and 17-18, Nov 12 and 19, 2 p.m. Helen Forman Theatre RIC students (limit 2 per ID) $5 In this hilarious comedy, two English Shakespearean actors, Jack and Leo, find themselves so down on their luck that they are performing Scenes from Shakespeare on the Moose Lodge circuit in Pennsylvania. When they hear that an old lady in York, Pennsylvania is about to die and leave her fortune to her two long-lost English nephews, they resolve to pass themselves off as her beloved relatives and get the cash. The trouble is, they find out that the relatives aren t

7 nephews, but nieces! Romantic entanglements abound, especially when Leo falls in love with the old lady s niece, Meg. Guest soloist Steve Laven, cellist with the Rhode Island Philharmonic and adjunct faculty member of music at Rhode Island College, performs Bryant s 2011 Concerto for Cello. The Bang Group has taken this Christmas favorite and torn it limb from limb, mixing Tchaikovsky s original score with music by Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller and others. This immensely entertaining show is musical and witty, melding tap, disco, ballet and contemporary dance over 22 scenes that combine fantasy and silliness to marvelous effect. The New York Times.

It s all up to Ash, a housewares employee turned demonkilling hero, and his trusty chainsaw, to save the day. Blood flies. Limbs are dismembered. Demons tell bad jokes... and all to music! Tuesday, Dec. 5 Music: Leipzig s Musical Heritage RIC Symphony Orchestra Alexey Shabalin, conductor The music created by famous composers who worked in Leipzig is a cultural treasure of global significance. Johann Sebastian Bach, Robert and Clara Schumann, Felix Mendelssohn and Richard Wagner (to mention the most prominent) all lived and composed in Leipzig. RIC Assistant Professor of Music Alexey Shabalin will alternate between the roles of soloist and conductor.
