3 Program Notes Gabriel Fauré ( ) composed the cycle La Bonne Chanson while in a love affair with Emma Bardac. Madame Bardac later married Claude Debussy. The texts Fauré selected were nine of the twenty-one poems Paul Verlaine wrote for his fiancée, Mathilde Mauté. The selections sung this evening were composed in 1893 and 1894, and were premiered April 25, 1894, by tenor, Maurice Bagès. Spanish composer, Fernando Obradors, ( ) is especially known for four volumes titled Canciones clásicas españolas. The selections sung this evening are from Volume One, and are most frequently sung by sopranos. Obradors studied piano with his mother, was a conductor of several orchestras in Spain, and taught himself counterpoint and composition. Three 20 th and 21 st Century songs with Texts written by women, dedicated to women, composed to women. Under the Hawthorne Tree, Libby Larsen (1950), text: Willa Cather Under the Hawthorne Tree is from Larsen s cycle, Margaret Songs, and based upon a short story by Willa Cather. Margaret Elliot is a character in Larsen s opera Eric Hermannson s Soul. In this song Margaret is telling her brother Willis about the night she spent with Hermannson. It was there with Eric that she found her one great moment. Heart, we will forget him, Aaron Copland ( ), text: Emily Dickinson Aaron Copland set his twelve Dickinson songs from March 1949 to March Each song was dedicated to a composer friend. Heart, we will forget him was dedicated to Marcelle De Manziarly, a French woman composer who was also an educator, pianist, and conductor. Copland s intent was to express musically Dickinson s dominant themes of nature, death, life, and eternity. The Metropolitan Tower, Lori Laitman (1955), text: Sara Teasdale Her very first song and first cycle of the same title, Lori wrote The Metropolitan Tower for her friend, soprano Lauren Wagner. The Metropolitan Tower is included in Teasdale s 1911 volume titled Helen of Troy and Other Poems. As the lovers walk the streets, through different keys and views, love was reckoned from that hour. Translations Pur ti miro from L incoronazione di Poppea I adore you, I embrace you, I desire you, I enchain you, No more grieving, no more sorrow, O my dearest, O my beloved. I am yours, O my love, tell me so, you are mine, mine alone, O my love. Adelaide, text by Friedrich von Matthisson Alone, your friend wanders in the Spring garden, Mildly encircled by magic light That quivers through swaying, blossoming boughs, In the mirroring stream, in the snow of the Alps, In the dying day's golden clouds, In the fields of stars, your image shines, Evening breezes whisper in the tender leaves, Silvery lilies-of-the-valley rustle in the grass, Waves murmur and nightingales call: One day, oh wonder! upon my grave will bloom A flower from the ashes of my heart; And clearly on every purple leaf will gleam:
4 Puisque l'aube grandit Since dawn is rising from La Bonne Chanson, text Paul Verlaine Since here is the day-break, Since, after having fled from me for a long time, hope is ready to fly back towards me who calls and implores it, Since all this good-fortune is ready to be mine, I want, guided by you, beautiful softly flaming eyes, Led by you, o hand where my hand will tremble, to walk straight ahead, whether it be on mossy paths or whether rocks and pebbles hamper the way; And as if to cradle the slowness of the journey, I will sing simple songs, I tell myself that she will no doubt listen to me without displeasure; and truly I want no other Paradise. N'est-ce pas? Is it not so? Is it not so? We shall go, happy any slow, on the humble path that Hope shows us with a smile, little caring whether we are seen or not. Isolated in love as though in a dark wood, our two hearts, breathing out their peaceful tenderness, will be two nightingales which sing in the evening. Without concerning ourselves with what Fate holds for us, we shall walk nevertheless in step, and hand in hand, with the child-like soul of those who love each other without complication, is it not so? L'hiver a cessé Winter has ended Winter has ended: the light is tepid and dances, from the ground to the clear sky. Even the saddest heart must yield to the immense joy dispersed in the air. For one year now I have had Spring in my soul and the green return of the gentle month of May, just as one flame engulfs another flame, places some perfection on my perfection. The blue sky extends, rises and crowns the unchanging azure where my love laughs. The season is beautiful and my lot is good and all my hopes have at last reached their turn. Let Summer come! Let Autumn and Winter come again! And I shall find each season charming, o You who is crowned by this dream and this reason! Chanson Triste, text by Henri Cazalis In your heart moonlight lies dormant, A gentle moonlight of summer; And far from the troubles of life, I will lose myself in your brightness. I will forget past griefs, My love, when you rock My unhappy heart and my thoughts In the loving tranquility of your arms. You will lay my anxious head, Oh! -sometimes upon your lap, And you will utter to it a ballad That will seem to speak of us; And from your eyes so full of sadness, From your eyes I will then drink So many kisses and so much tenderness That perhaps at last I will be healed. Extase, text by Henri Cazalis On your pale breast my heart is sleeping A sleep as sweet as death Exquisite death, death perfumed By the breath of the beloved On your pale breast my heart is sleeping A sleep as sweet as death Phidylé, text by Charles-Marie-René Leconte de Lisle The grass is soft for slumber beneath the fresh poplars, on the slopes by the mossy springs, which, in the meadows flowering with a thousand plants, lose themselves under dark thickets. Rest, o Phidylé! the midday sun shines on the foliage and invites you to sleep! Among clover and thyme, alone, in full sunlight hum the fickle honeybees. A warm fragrance circulates about the turning paths, the red cornflower tilts, and the birds, skimming the hill with their wings, search for shade among the wild roses. But when the sun, turning in its resplendent orbit, finds its heat abating, let your loveliest smile and your most ardent kiss recompense me for waiting! Al Amor (Canciones clásicas españolas) To My Love Give me, Love, kisses as countless As the hairs that have clung to my head! And add a thousand and a hundred, And then a hundred and a thousand, And to these many thousands add three!
5 And as none might agree Let us rip up that tally And then count again only backwards! Corazon, porqué pasáis? O heart, why do you lie awake During the nights made for love When your mistress rests In the embrace of another lover? El Majo celoso The Jealous Lad They have told him (the jealous lad) that in the meadow I have been seen with a dandy Dressed in a silk shirt And a velvet vest. My handsome boy, I love you, Never think I am dying Mad with love For that dandy. (low-class, ruffian, rogue) Del cabello más sutil From that finest hair Which you braid I would craft a chain To draw you by my side. A cup within your house, Dear maiden, I'd wish to be I would kiss your mouth Whenever you drink from it... Chiquitita la novia Tiny Bride A tiny bride. A tiny groom, A tiny parlor And a bedroom, That s why I want A tiny bed And a mosquito net Fra gli amplessi from Così fan tutte Very soon now I'll be enfolded In the embraces of my true love; Unrecognized in these garments I will come before him. Oh, what joy will fill his heart When he sees me again! Ah no, dear heart! With this sword in your hand Strike me to the heart, And if you lack the strength, By Heaven, I'll guide your hand myself. Alas, be silent! I am Tormented and unhappy enough! and Ah, now my constancy Begins to falter Before his looks and his words! Go away, I beg! It cannot be. In pity's name, what do you ask of me? Your heart or my death. My strength is giving out! Yield, my dearest! Heaven, direct me! Turn a merciful eye on me. In me alone you'll find Husband, lover and more, if you wish. Delay no longer, my adored one. Merciful heaven! Cruel man, you've won! Do with me what you will. and Embrace me, my dearest, And may the consolation for our sorrows Be to spend our time in sweet affection, And sigh for joy! And meanwhile I, left wretched, shall die of grief. What do I see? I am betrayed! Oh leave me!
