3 Program Notes In this year of the 500 th anniversary of the Reformation, we start and end this program with Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott (A Mighty Fortress is our God), albeit in two very different settings. The opening setting is a short harmonized chorale by J. C. Rinck, with small interpolations between most of the phrases. Following this is a beautiful five part setting of the chorale An Wasserflüssen Babylon (By the Waters of Babylon) by J. S. Bach (or possibly by J. L. Krebs, Bach s student). The soprano voice has the melody, the four accompaniment voices are equally divided up between left hand and pedal. We conclude the first set with another setting of Ein feste Burg, this one by Dietrich Buxtehude, with a highly ornamented melody line. The rest of the program, except Mendelssohn s Prelude and Fugue in D Minor, are products of my sabbatical year ( ) which was spent in part by making arrangements for 4-hand organ. The year resulted in six arrangements, three of which are on this program. (More info about these arrangements can be found online at (click on Out on Eight Limbs ). The Serenade in D, KV. 239, by Mozart was written for a solo quartet of two violins, viola, and double bass; and a small string orchestra of Violin 1 and 2, viola, cello, and timpani. It is in three movements: Marcia, Menuetto, and Rondeau. The contrast of the two string ensembles lends itself very well to transcription for the organ by using two contrasting manuals, and is not unlike the baroque organ transcriptions of orchestral works (such as Bach writing transcriptions of Vivaldi s orchestral works). Robert Schumann wrote his Six Studien (canons) for the pedal piano, a somewhat obscure instrument, never very popular in any time period. It is (as the name suggests) a piano with a pedal board (the latter is normally associated with the organ). The pedals encompass at least 27 notes, sometimes more, and they could either pull down a corresponding note in the manual, or they could have their own independent set of strings. Schumann owned one of these instruments and was quite intrigued by it. This transcription for four hand organ is intended to be played on a three manual instrument. It allows for the canon to be played on two separate manuals, with the accompaniment on the remaining manual. The result is a much clearer canon, since those voices are now separate in sound color from everything else. In the original they are buried within all other voices on one sound (the piano!). Mendelssohn wrote the Fugue of the Prelude and Fugue in D Minor quite a bit earlier than the prelude. The prelude consists of chordal motives, separated by fast passage work, which get faster as the piece progresses, from 8 th notes, to triplets, to 16 th notes. The fugue is strict and follows the traditional norms, and is considerably shorter than the prelude. We continue immediately into the 4-hand arrangement of the last two movements of the Reformation Symphony, a beautiful and lyrical Andante, followed by the last movement which includes several incarnations of Ein feste Burg, ending with a simple harmonization on full organ, making a nice bookend with the opening selection of the program this afternoon. About the Artists Notes by Paul Tegels Dana Robinson, a native of Boston, is Associate Professor of Music (organ) at the University of Illinois, Urbana- Champaign. He has performed on some of the most significant modern and historic organs in the United States, and has presented recitals, master classes, and lectures for the Boston and River Valley chapters of the American Guild of Organists, the Round Lake Historical Society, Boston's First Night festival, Methuen Memorial Music Hall, the Old West Organ Society, Baroque Artists of Champaign, and the National Convention of the Organ Historical Society. He has also appeared with The Boston Cècelia, Baroque Artists of Champaign, and with Dutch organist Paul Tegels, with whom he gives frequent duet recitals. His performances are frequently featured on the nationally syndicated radio program, Pipedreams. An active church musician, Professor Robinson has served as organist and choir master of Trinity Cathedral in Davenport, Iowa, and as organist and director of music for the Center of Faith and Life at Luther College. Professor Robinson is presently organist of Grace Lutheran Church in Champaign. He has held teaching appointments at Central College of Iowa, and Luther College. The recipient of numerous awards and honors, Professor Robinson won the Youth Concerts at Symphony Hall Concerto Competition, and First Prize in the Arthur Poister Competition. In 1988 he received the Frank Huntington Beebe Grant for study abroad. His principal teachers include George Faxon, Yuko Hayashi, Harald Vogel, and Delbert Disselhorst, and pianists Julius Chaloff and Kenneth Amada.

4 Paul Tegels, a native of the Netherlands, is Associate Professor of Music, and serves as University Organist at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA. He received his Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Organ Performance and Pedagogy and his Master of Arts Degree in Choral Conducting from the University of Iowa, where he studied organ with Delores Bruch, and choral conducting with William Hatcher. Other degrees and awards include the Artist Diploma and the Master of Music Degree in organ performance from the New England Conservatory in Boston where he studied with Yuko Hayashi and William Porter. He is the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship from the Netherlands-America Commission for Educational Exchange. He holds the teaching and performance degrees from the Stedelijk Conservatorium in Arnhem, The Netherlands, where he studied organ with Bert Matter and harpsichord with Cees Rosenhart. He has done extensive research on the organ and harpsichord concertos of Franz Joseph Haydn, and has played the first American performance of the Haydn Organ Concerto in D, Hoboken XVIII-2, of which he has prepared a performance edition. He has made several 4-hand organ arrangements of orchestral and keyboard works, contained in a collection called Out on Eight Limbs (for more information about these works, go to and click on Out on Eight Limbs ). He is past dean of the Tacoma Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, and is past president of the Westfield Center for Keyboard Studies. Prior to his appointment at PLU, he taught at Bethany College in Lindsborg, KS. Paul Tegels has performed extensively in solo and ensemble concerts in the United States, Europe, Japan, and New Zealand. He has performed at National Conventions of the Organ Historical Society, and has played some of the most significant organs in the US. As a lecturer, he has presented numerous programs at chapter meetings of the American Guild of Organists, and at other conventions. He also performs frequently in duet concerts with University of Illinois professor of organ, Dana Robinson. About the Organ Builder Since the founding of the company in 1979, Paul Fritts & Co. Organ Builders has built forty two instruments. The firm has devoted considerable time researching and practicing the techniques developed by the finest organ builders working in the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Mexico, France and the United States with an emphasis on the so-called Golden Age period of organ building. Organ building during this period reached a very high level and sophistication, particularly when we study pipe making. Elegant speech combined with a full yet sweet and colorful tone captivates the listener. The research includes careful observations of the acoustical properties of the rooms in which they speak; a key aspect to consider as one evaluates the sound of an organ. These experiences, together with the collective expertise found within the workshop, contribute to each new project. The primary mission is to craft instruments that today s players and audiences will love and cherish. Recent work has reflected a desire to expand further the range of the instruments while maintaining high musical standards within a meaningful and useful style. For the most part, this involves building larger, more expansive projects with additional features that broaden the musical scope of the organs. The most recent installment was a seventy stop organ in the Basilica on the campus of The University of Notre Dame, Indiana. This is the firm s largest instrument to date with four manuals and a highly decorated case that includes a Rückpositive case cantilevered from the gallery rail similar to the organ here at PLU. Currently taking shape is a two manual organ with thirty four stops for the First Presbyterian Church in Bloomington, Indiana. There are currently seven craftsmen working with Paul in the workshop. All design work along with the construction of the thousands of components (except for the electric blowers, electronic pre-set systems and small hardware items) is done in-house. The establishment of the pipe shop in 1983 completed this vision for the company, enabling personalized attention to the most important parts of the organs. The workshop itself, located just ten blocks from PLU, features a beautiful timber-framed structure with sufficient height and space for the largest organs to be assembled. This contributes greatly to professional and efficient installations.
