3 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE RAFFLE RAMBLIN S BARBARA KINNEY Rich Owens Perfectly Thrown Together Jazz Band made everyone really glad they came. Happy music, a great day on September 23rd. It s that time of year when we think about who will serve South Bay in The Elks Lodge provides us with a wonderful venue, good food and cheerfully poured adult beverages! We have a board meeting, once a month, right here at the Elks Lodge. We usually take care of South Bay business in an hour. Please consider joining our merry band of board members. October 28th brings us more happy music. Toot Sweet" is fun to dance to and fun to hear. They put on a really good show. Mark October 28th as a must for South Bay Jazz Society. September 23 was yet another banner day for the Raffle Committee! We again made $130, which goes towards the fee for one band each year. I cannot thank enough my trusty co-raffle Faeries, Kay McIntyre and Joyce Taylor. Your Chief Raffle Faerie, Cheri, has gotten her act together, and this year has planned the Raffle Themes through the end of the year. As you know, last month was themed for Halloween. October will be a Harvest/Thanksgiving theme. November will be a Christmas theme, and our December meeting, (on the THIRD Sunday), will have a New Year's theme. Whew! I'm gobsmacked by my efficiency... That said, we ALWAYS need your kind donations. We need wine and CDs. The Raffle cannot go forward without these items. Feel free to donate whatever you can; clear out your CD collection and share some of your gently-used CDs or those you don't listen to anymore. We will happily use them. Bring a bottle of your favorite wine to share with some lucky winner! To that end, I send out a HUGE Raffle Faerie THANK YOU to Catherine Alexander and Terry LaClair for their generous donations of wine in September. We cannot thank you enough for your continuing support of our efforts. I very much look forward to seeing you all at our October 28th meeting, which will feature Jack Gerken's Toot Sweet Jazz Band. You will LOVE the music and you will have fun with our Harvest/Thanksgiving-themed raffle! See you there and "Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler!" RAFFLE PRIZE WINNERS! This month s Raffle was a "Spooktacular" array of Halloween items, including wine, skeleton-hand goblets, candy & CDs. 4 Your Ambassadors of Fun - Carol and Mary Lynn, fired up the RV and found our way to Sacramento for the 6th Annual Hot Jazz Jubilee - August 31-September 3. While there were too many bands to see in four short days, here are some of the highlights from our trip: The High Sierra Jazz Band was as great as usual with Earl McKee back on the sousaphone even though he was with a walker. Everyone loved Grand Dominion with Clink Baker and Katie Cavera, who was nominated as Musician of the Year in Monterey. I loved her solo, "I'd like to Shimmy like My Sister Kate." One afternoon in the Grand Ballroom they joined High Street Party Band with Gator Nation. Wow, the two dance floors were full, and an umbrella parade contributed to the fun! The Dave Bennett Quartet was also one of our favorites. Another favorite was Carl Sonny Leyland who was great both playing solo or with his trio. Leyland's playing displays infectious spontaneity, providing plenty surprises for listeners. There was another surprise artist by the name of Larry Sikorski and his quartet. Larry, who is a long-time resident of Sacramento, grew up outside of New York and attended college in Sinatra's home town of Hoboken N.J. He sang an entire set of Frank Sinatra songs, which wowed the crowd. Other Guest Artists were Cheryl Burt, Kylie Castro, Claudette Stone and Pat Yankee. Bands in ABC order were Auchestra - the Au brothers with Otis Mouring, Bonnie, Otto, Jack Stanfill, Dave Johnson and Zak Sapunon, Dave Bennett Quartet, Cocuzzi Courtet, Cornet Chop Suey, The Crescent Katz, Bob Draga with Friends, Firehouse Tribute Band (the Crescent Katz+2), Gator Nation, Grand Dominion Jazz Band, The High Sierra Jazz Band, The All New High Street Party Band, Holland and Coots, Joanna Koford, Carl Sonny Leyland, The Pubcrawlers, The Royal Society Jazz Orchestra, Shelley, Bill & Eddie, Sister Swing, Larry Sikorsik Quartet, Todd Morgan and His Swingsters, Yosemite Jazz Band, Yve Evans & company, & Washboard Steve. Another surprise was pianist Adam Swanson. He was asked to play for the Royal Society Jazz Orchestra because Frederick, their regular piano player, couldn t attend. I'd not encountered this young man s talent until I heard him with Danny Coots. Adam is around 26 and has been followed by 4 some of the patrons since he was 14. He put on an outstanding performance. Carl Sonny Leland - Watch Out! The board of directors for Hot Jazz Jubilee continue to focus on younger musicians. This year they had 26 sets of music provided by youth bands which I have to say were fantastic! Two youth bands were from out of state: Denver Jazz Club All Stars and Bay City Swing from Coos Bay, Orgeon. Then there were several bands from the Sacramento area, including: TNT, the local Honor Jazz Band, Parker & the Weis Guys, The Syncopating Sea Monkeys, The River City Swingers, and the Tower Bridge Trad Brass Band. I don t usually attend too many of the Youth performances but I was awe struck by so many of these groups and their ability at High School age. The one Youth Group that truly stood out to me was the Bay City Swing group. It was founded in 2016 and is a group of young faces with old souls. Their ages range from Their exuberance, excellent musicianship, and love for the swing genre exploded from the stage and their enthusiasm was entertaining and contagious. I went to several of their sets and promoted them throughout the weekend. I m sure the last set on Monday was standing room only. Shaymus Hanlin, who is 17, does vocals and is their talented Master of Cermonies. I had met their trombone player, Scott Hayes, on Friday night and asked him to dance. Yes, he was a fantastic swing dancer and said he was known to leave the stage to dance with women who liked to dance. Yes, he did just that on Sunday morning! Scott left the stage and asked Mary Lynn to dance first and then later danced with me. To top that set off, one of the patrons quietly asked Mary Lynn and I if we d sit on the stage near our favorite dancer for the song, "Just a Gigolo." We had our colorful hats and boas so we joined them on stage with our flair. What a moment! Ken McMurray walked up on stage and announced, You two are coming back next year!" Next year s 2019 Hot Jazz Jubuilee is Aug 30th - Sept 2nd. Mark your calendar now and get your tickets and room reservation early. Wally s Warehouse Waifs, Moonlight Swing, Side Street Strutters, Big Butter Jazz Band and Tom Rigney & Flambeau are among the bands to be scheduled next year. You can t afford to stay home. By Carol Goedde, one of our Ambassadors of Fun

5 WHO WAS DANCIN & JAMMIN IN SEPTEMBER? 5

6 Toot Sweet was founded in 1990 by John Bria, a versatile clarinet and saxophone player, who was well-known in the Bay Area. His enthusiasm for our kind of music continues to radiate from the members of today s band, long after his untimely passing. Our players (both regulars and some darn good subs when needed) enjoy each other s musicianship, and we have a lot of fun playing for our audiences (we re not faking it!). Dancing is an increasingly popular activity at jazz society functions everywhere; so we strive to optimize our mix of tunes to fully accommodate both our dancers and our listeners...as far as we know, we re the only trad-jazz band in the area that will provide music for a range of Latin dance steps. 7 Fun! Fun! Fun! That s what happens at our SBTJS LIVE Trad Jazz and Dixieland Musical Sundays! Don Abel and Dick Williams did their usual great job leading the Jammer Sets. We had a surprise visit from the Monterey area, cornet player, Bob Netzly, who performed on the two Jammer Sets. What a great musician! Please come back soon. At one point we had two cornet players, and one trumpet player all sharing and harmonizing with each other. It sure shows what super musicians can do. Philip Rice showed up to play trombone, so Brian Richardson played first set, and Philip on the second set. Jim O Briant was back in town so we heard great tuba lines. When we weren t playing we were listening to Rich Owen s Thrown Together Band. They were a WOW! Our two bands kept listeners busy, and dancers on the floor. Thanks to all who make LIVE Trad Jazz and Dixieland continue at SBTJS on our Musical Sundays. FRIENDS OF JAZZ DANCE PARTY IN DANVILLE Grange Hall, 743 Diablo Rd.
