3 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE A Youth Dixieland Jazz Fest On Saturday January 25th Newpark Mall in Newark, CA will be the site of jazz performances by five experienced youth bands promoted by East Bay Traditional Jazz Society. Beginning at 11 a.m. they will each put on a 50 minute performance on the first floor of the mall adjacent to the Penney s hallway. The bands in order of appearance will be Scout Band from the East Bay; Jazz Raptors from Creekview Ranch Middle School in Roseville CA; Alumni Band, a jazz society reunion band (East Bay Trad Jazz Society, that is); Dixie Dominus from Fremont Christian High School and Jazzinators Jazz Band of the East Bay Trad Jazz Society. This sounds like a good way to spend a January Saturday after recovering from December holiday activity. Newpark Mall is on Mowry Avenue in Newark. The bands should have their own CD s for sale if you find a favorite there. For more details you can go to and/or DEADLINE FOR ARTICLES Jan. 31, Please send all news, articles and announcements to: JoAnn Schwartz P.O. Box 714, Middletown, CA joannx@att.net BARBARA KINNEY s we begin 2014, let us all keep in mind how we can be a part of South Bay s continuing success. Number 1 is your presence, followed by inviting others to join us, perhaps providing transportation for someone else. We always welcome anything extra in your renewals. Partial or full band sponsorship makes us a membership of angels! Much gratitude goes to the Elks Wives Club for their wonderful support. Three special people who donate their time to provide food for us are, Pat Sargent, Carol Barnhart and the front man Tom Young. Our December luncheon of ham, sweet potatoes, salad and vegetables was wonderful, down to the dried cranberries in the salad and almonds in the green beans. Thanks to the individuals serving on our Board for 2014, but please take note how many positions are still open. We survive because current Board members wear many hats. We thank Bill Breakey for continuing to update the membership roster and provide mailing labels for the South Bay Beat, even though he has moved to Manteca!!! Join us January 26 for the Bob Schulz Frisco Jazz Band! LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL!!! Barbara Kinney, President In Memoriam Lynn Schloss of Walnut Creek died peacefully in his sleep at home January 2, 2014 after a short hospital stay. The previous night when he was asked if he wanted anything, he mentioned music. Both he and his wife, Sheila, were often at our music sessions and supported N.O.J.C. too. 5 It was no surprise that America s Finest City Dixieland Jazz Society did it yet again. They get the best bands with a wide variety of sounds to pack in the festival goers over the Thanksgiving holiday. This was their 34 th Festival, held as always at the Town & Country Resort and Convention Center, everything you could want in one location. This jazz club has entertaining down to a fine art and as this festival is all under one roof it makes it easy to change venues and follow your favorite bands. Additionally there were several organized parasol parades, complete with a marching band, a room dedicated to piano soloists, venues remembering some of the most famous and respected musicians, and even some good old fashioned rock and roll. The music actually starts on Wednesday evening for early birds and additionally there is music playing in the foyer throughout the festival which adds to the enjoyment. Jazz On Thanksgiving the Town & Country Hotel goes all out with their fabulous buffet dinner, after which the jazz starts. There were only two venues Thanksgiving evening, but it was hard to choose between them. From Friday through Sunday the jazz goes on and on, starting just early enough and continuing until the wee hours. If OKOM is your favorite there were some of the best bands playing including Bob Schulz and his Frisco Jazz Band, Buck Creek Jazz Band, Grand Dominion, High Sierra Jazz Band, Night Blooming Jazzmen, Red Pepper Jazz Band with Phil Kirk on trumpet, Titanic Jazz Band and Yerba Buena Stompers, with Leon Oakley on trumpet and Chris Tyle on cornet. Yes, Buck Creek is back and sounding as good as ever. The front line is still firmly in place, Jim Ritter, co-leader on cornet, Frank Mesich co-leader on trombone, John Skillman on clarinet and Jerry Addicot playing banjo, there were a couple of new faces to me at the festival, Chuck Stewart on tuba and Stan Mulder drums. It was so good to see Buck Creek together again, apparently their health issues resolved and Stella is still looking after them as band hostess. Another crowd pleaser is Cornet Chop Suey they really know how to entertain and their tribute to Louis Armstrong was well done. I enjoyed hearing Dick Williams and friends, this time it wasn t a full blown jam set with multiple musicians, but a regular group that Dick selected. The Euphoria Brass Band led several parasol parades with the second liners really enjoying following them, parasols held high. The Heliotrope Ragtime Orchestra are so authentic from their costumes to how they play so well together, they have a husband and wife duo on violin, Daniel and Cheryl Swan. The person announcing has a wonderful sense of humor which adds to the listening experience. Banjo bands were out in force the San Diego Banjo Band and San Fernando Valley Banjo Band. There were other groups including the Reynolds Brothers, and Ray Skjelbred and his Cubs. Guest artists Katie Cavera, Bob Draga and Brady McKay entertained with many of the bands. Dave Bennett leads his quartet where he shines playing and looking like Benny Goodman. But Dave Bennett and his Memphis Boys give us that old time rock and roll with such amazing energy and enthusiasm. Dave thumps out boogie woogie with the best of them and sings like Gerry Lee Lewis, Elvis, and Johnnie Cash. The entire group gets into the 1950 s frame of mind, playing their instruments backwards, standing on them and even throwing them in the air. Dave does the killer thing with his foot on the keys, standing on the piano stool and even sitting on the keys. It was the kind of music where you just couldn t sit still, the entire room was in motion. One thing I appreciate in San Diego is that they plan the bands so that one doesn t have to scramble and move every set. They have large dance floors in all of the main venues and the dance floors were packed. One thing that I found difficult was choosing which bands to listen to, I just couldn t get to all of them as there was such a good selection. An interesting aspect is the international visitors that make this festival a regular destination. Jazz is popular world wide and this festival is famous, the visitors all have their stories, including how many times they have attended. Roll on the 35 th San Diego Jazz Fest.
