2 log into a 6 profitability. Importantly, SERIES Integrated or separate safety systems: which is best? HMIs are much more than a window into a machine We need to distinguish between different types of data 5 MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR CONTROLS AND HMIs The latest HMIs are capable of doing much more than simply acting as a window into a machine s activities For more than a quarter of a century, Drives & Controls has been the magazine that readers turn to for news and information on the worlds of motion control, automation and mechanical power transmission. We also provide comprehensive coverage of allied subjects such as machine safety, industrial communications, hydraulics, pneumatics and sensors. Drives & Controls is widely regarded as the leading UK publication in the motion control and automation market. There are several reasons for this. For a start, we are part of a small, focussed organisation our only other publications are Hydraulics & Pneumatics, Plant & Works Engineering, Power Electronics Europe and the recently-launched Offshore Design & Engineering Equipment so we are close to the market we serve, and know it well. Second, we have built up a reputation for editorial quality and integrity. Unlike many other technical publications, we do not charge so-called colour separation fees or demand other payments for items to be included in editorial sections of the magazine. For example, every item in our comprehensive new products section is chosen by the editorial team on the basis of its potential interest to our readers and on its topicality not on whether someone is prepared to pay for it to be included. Another distinguishing feature is the breadth and depth of our news coverage of both technological and business issues. We report not only on UK developments, but also on news from the global automation industry, which inevitably has implications for the UK market. As well as the wide-ranging news coverage in our printed editions, we also carry the latest news on our global Web site, often in greater depth than is possible in the magazine. BIG DATA Living with the cloud: not all data is the same We are starting to reap the benefits of storing vast amounts of industrial data in the cloud. But Wayne Warren, chief technology officer at the database management specialist Raima, argues that we need to differentiate between live, actionable information and data with ongoing value, and treat them appropriately. T he rise of cloud storage is offering companies of all sizes new opportunities to store, manage and analyse data easily, effectively and at low cost. Data management in the cloud has helped them to cut their in-house systems costs and complexity, while gaining increased visibility into plant and processes. At the same time, third-party service organisations have emerged to provide data dashboards that give companies live real-time control of their assets often from remote locations as well as historical trend analyses. Consider, for example, a company with a vital asset in a remote location. It may be advantageous to monitor key operational data to ensure that the equipment is not heading for a catastrophic fault, and some performance data to ensure that output is optimal. Accessing data from sensors and diagnostics feedback from onboard control systems might mean setting up embedded Web servers or establishing some form of telemetry, and then getting that data into management software and delivering it in a means that can be acted upon. It would be much easier to feed those same outputs to a cloud-based data management provider, and then to customised dashboard offering visualisation to pull meaningful, actionable information out and control, complete with alarms, actions, of the background noise. reports and more. And all for a nominal Whereas a data analyst might once have monthly fee. Furthermore, with almost been interested simply in production line unlimited storage in the cloud, all of the data quotas and the link to plant or asset uptime, can be stored, mined, analysed and today they may also be interested in accessing disseminated in reports that provide the data generated by the myriad of unprecedented levels of traceability and longterm trend analyses that can help to boost That raw data may well hold the key to automated devices on the production line. performance and, ultimately, to improve increased productivity, reduced energy consumption, the elimination of waste, reduced downtime, improved overall equipment effectiveness and, ultimately, a As our data output increases, it might seem better bottom line. reasonable to expect that the quality of And we really are talking about huge information being returned from the cloud amounts of data. The rise of the Internet of should improve as well, allowing us to make Things and machine-to-machine (MM) better operational decisions that improve communications, combined with the latest performance still further. GSM networks that deliver high-speed, To an extent, this is true. But there is also bidirectional data transfer without the danger on that path because, as we move into limitations of range, power, data size and an era of big data, it is becoming network infrastructure that held back increasingly difficult traditional telematics solutions has seen data transmission increase exponentially in the last few years. In 01, more than.5 Exabytes (.5 x bytes) of data were being created every day around the globe, and it is certainly not unusual for individual companies to generate hundreds of gigabytes of data. different types of Background noise / 01 Then there is our exhibition, which has established itself as an almost unmissable event for anyone wanting to keep up-to-date with developments in our sector. It has a feelgood factor that is missing from many other exhibitions that are organised by anonymous groups with no real knowledge of the industry their shows are targeting. The Drives & Controls Show is held at the Birmingham NEC, alongside other key industrial exhibitions, including MACH, Air-Tech, Plant & Asset Management, European Offshore Energy and NEW, creating the UK s major engineering showcase. The event, held biennially since 006, has established itself as the most important meeting place for the UK manufacturing industry. Drives & Controls has carved a unique place among British technical magazines, and we are building and expanding from this solid base. We thank those that have supported us so far, and look forward to working with you again in the future. Tony Sacks, Editor NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 01 INSIDE safe torque off energy recovering keypad D MACHINE SAFETY: CONTROLS AND HMIs: CLOUD STORAGE: new heart of electric motion HMIs: more than just the machine s face Today s control interfaces are designed to bring the technology to life for operators, as well as simplifying diagnostics and maintenance. Karl Walker, automation product marketing manager at Omron, argues that the HMI is now far more than a window into a machine. T raditionally, the main reasons for specifying HMIs as part of a machine control system were to present and to input data, and to visualise the machine or a process. Over the years, sleek, intuitive graphical control interfaces have superseded functional keypads, switches, indicator lamps and panel meters. In many cases, machine quality is judged by the presentation of the HMI. Even if the machine incorporates cutting-edge technology, with superlative design, performance and build quality, a poorly executed, counter-intuitive set of operator control screens, which lack ergonomics and aesthetics, can convey the impression of a poor-quality machine. Worse still, a poorlydesigned operator interface can hinder efficiency, rather than boosting productivity. In the age of smartphones and tablets, screen sizes, numbers of colours, pixel counts and graphical capabilities have become important to users. Although the industrial market has not traditionally mirrored the fast-moving consumer market, attitudes are changing. These bells and whistles are now expected. This is reflected in marketing and in the amount of space dedicated to what many see as the racier elements of automated machines. parametrization via usb flying motor restart / 01 As the quality of a machine has come to be judged by its little coloured window, some OEMs are now turning to ergonomics consultants and graphic designers. Guided by input from machine users, these design specialists are developing the operator interface even before the engineers become involved. The global nature of most OEM businesses has also resulted in a shift from text-led instructions to intuitive and instantly-recognisable graphics. Rich media The latest HMIs such as Omron s new NAseries incorporate capabilities for rich media, including photos, videos and PDFs, giving operators increased clarity and control over their machines. It s fair to say that the HMI has become the nexus of the machine, simplifying even the most complex processes. These developments mean that a simple graphical representation of an error can link to a video that walks an operator through the recovery process or shows how to replace key components. When in-depth troubleshooting is needed, PDF manuals can be displayed, instead of using printouts, thus simplifying maintenance, reducing recovery times and boosting productivity. Thanks to the use of standard operating platforms such as Windows Embedded Compact, these media resources can be updated remotely, easily and securely, ensuring that the interface evolves constantly to reflect the current operational requirements. An added benefit is that the operating system is closed to the user. Compared to traditional industrial PCs, this helps to eliminate the risk of viruses or mis-uses that could result in the dreaded blue screen of death, while ensuring fast start-ups and retained variables without needing a UPS. These are all factors that users have come to expect from a modern HMI. HMIs can now deliver crisp, clear, highresolution graphical representations of almost any control element, coupled with functions such as trending graphs and accurate metering. This frees machinebuilders to focus on adding value to their designs using other aspects of presentation and visualisation. Although the connection between the HMI and the PLC is fundamental to the flow of data, if this data isn t present in the PLC, then the HMI can t visualise it. Ethernetbased industrial networks such as EtherCat can connect all elements of the control system. In Omron s case, this includes DRIVES & CONTROLS EXHIBITION AND CONFERENCE 016 The UK s leading exhibition for Drives, Automation, Power Transmission and Motion Control Equipment 1-1 APRIL 016, NEC BIRMINGHAM Since it was first held, more than two decades ago, the Drives & Controls show has established itself as the leading UK event for motion engineering and automation, and the only one dedicated to this vital sector of engineering and manufacturing. Our circulation is ABC audited (see below) and, for the sixth year running, we have kept pole position in the design market. It is important that the advertiser s message is seen by the specifiers of drives, motors, automation, power transmission and motion control equipment. Drives & Controls is proud to have a magazine that is highly respected and trusted. The quality and the frequency 10 issues a year enable us to report up-to-date news and views for this fast-moving and dynamic industry. Justify your marketing spend and get the exposure you have been promised. Our ABC certificate endorses our number one status on individually requested circulation in the engineering design market with a total circulation of more than 0,000 for the period Subscriptions requested by individual readers (ABC Audit Jan-Dec 013) u Automation CDA Design Solutions * Not registered for ABC audits. DPA Drives & Controls Eureka Industrial Technology 0 Panel & Systems Builder * WHO S READING THE MAGAZINE? WHAT THE ABC FIGURES MEAN The best objective data on who s reading a magazine comes from the independent Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC) which every year analyses and certifies the circulation of many but not all trade magazines. Publishers have to meet strict criteria to qualify for an ABC certificate*. Some of them fail to achieve these criteria. Others don t even apply for certification. A well as showing the total number of copies of a magazine being distributed, the ABC certificates also breaks down circulations into controlled and non-controlled. Non-Controlled. Non-controlled copies can be sent to anyone. ABC doesn t audit who is getting these copies. Drives & Controls has no non-controlled circulation. But for some other titles in the industrial press, up to 90% of their circulation is non-controlled. Controlled. Controlled copies are sent free only to individuals who meet terms of control that define their job title or field of activity. ABC breaks controlled circulation down into three categories: n Copies requested by individuals. n Copies requested for an individual by someone else in an organisation. n Non-requested copies where the publisher has to prove that the addressee fits the criteria for the target group defined in the terms of control. These non-requested subscriptions may be going to companies that no longer exist or to individuals who are no longer with a company. For some magazines, more than 90% of their circulation is non-requested. The number of requested readerships is therefore an important indication of who is actually reading a magazine and who regards the publication highly enough to ask to subscribe to it. Another important factor is when people asked to subscribe. In some cases, it may be three years since a subscriber asked to receive a magazine. They may no longer be with the company or may have moved to another position. The best publishers invest heavily to keep their requested circulations up-to-date. Almost 80% of Drives & Controls readers have asked to subscribe in the past months and we also have the largest number of individually requested subscriptions (15,387) in the design market. * The details of any audited magazine can be found on the ABC Web site at
