Ths year's wnner was Davd Daz for the book "Smoky Nght.". "Smoky Nght" s the story of a boy, hs cat and hs mother. t takes place durng a bg-cty rot. Cats and the rots brng neghbors from dfferent backgrounds together. When Davd Daz was n the frst grade, he was asked to fll n the letters for the word "nose." He also drew a nose and the face. t was at that moment he decded to become an artst. Davd grew up n Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He studed at the Art nsttute there. Then he moved to Calforna, where he now lves. "Smoky Nght" s the frst chldren's book Davd Daz has llustrated. However, he s not new to the feld of art. For the past 15 years, he has run a very busy studo. Davd Daz wth hs wfe, Cecela, and ther three chldren son Jercho, 12; son Arel, 5; and daughter Gabrelle, 3. ' t took Davd Daz about a year to fnsh "Smoky Nght." Durng that tme he was workng on dozens of other thngs. " work wth ad agences, desgn studos, magaznes and newspapers," he told us. Hs studo s n hs home, but he s plannng to get another place soon. He has one assstant who. helps hm wth the blls and flng. Hs advce to kds who want to become artsts: "Begn to look at as much art as possble. Begn to draw as much as possble. The more you draw, the better you are. There are lots of careers n the graphc arts" (drawng, pantng and photography, for nstance). Laura, 16, has had many actng parts n her career, ncludng parts on the shows "Are You Afrad of the Dark" and "Road to Avonlea." She s a good snger and has sung wth the Canadan Opera Company. She also has been a member of her school chor for seven years. She traned for three years wth the Canadan Chldren's Opera Chorus. Two years ago she won an award to help her study vocal technque. She and her famly moved to ths country 36 years ago. They settled n Calforna. After her chldren were n hgh school, she took a wrtng course at a nearby college. She sold her frst story to a chldren's magazne. Snce that tme she has wrtten about 160 books! Her books are wrtten for preschool kds all the way up to adults. n an ntervew wth her, we found out that she has turned one bedroom of her house nto a studo where she does her wrtng. The award s presented every three years. Vrgna Hamlton s the 1995 wnner. One of her many prevous awards was the 1975 Newbery Award for "M.C. Hggns, the Great." "Walk Two Moons" s the. story of 13-year old Salamanca, of Natve Amercan background. She sets out wth her c!5 grandparents to vst her mother, who has not returned from a trp to daho.! The Coretta Scott Kng Author Award for 1995 was awarded to Patrca. C. and Frederck L. McKssack for "Chrstmas n the Bg House, Chrstmas n the Quarters." The McKssacks, who have been marred for more than 20 years, have wrtten more than 20 books for chldren. Ths s ther second Kng Award Coretta Scott Kng Awards are gven each year to an outstandng black author and an outstandng black llustrator. "The Bells of Chrstmas" was a Kng honor book n Ms. Hamlton has won many awards,.!! ncludng two Kng Author :!j Awards. He s one of the best soccer goales n the Unted States. n 1993 he started 15 games for the U.S. natonal team and had fve shutouts (a shutout occurs when the other team does not score). That same year, he won the Hermann Trophy, whch s gven to the best college soccer player n the Unted States. n 1990 he helped lead UCLA to the natonal champonshp.
