We sure had a blast here with our summer reading program, Reading By Design. If you missed it this year make sure you sign up next year. Individuals, families, local businesses & corporations are all encouraged to join and make a difference. Friends of the Markham Public Library is a non-profit organization that raises funds to provide events, purchase materials and equipment that is beyond the library s budget. The Friends of the Markham Public Library are ACTIVELY seeking NEW members. All you need is a library card. Our library offers you the tools you need to expand your knowledge and skill set with access to the world s information both in print and digitally. Someone who is unable to visit the library because of health reasons but loves reading, watching movies, or listening to music can still enjoy all of those things? With a VALID Markham Public Library Card, patrons can receive free delivery of such items by calling the front

Please present your library card for updates and clear your fines! The Markham Public Library staff will be hosting special sign-up events. If you re a Markham or Posen resident, stop by to apply for a new card or renew an old one. PLEASE be sure to bring two forms of ID with your CURRENT address with one being a photo ID. Join the Markham Public Library as we celebrate Literacy Month Love reading even more with an exciting night of story time and keepsake crafts for each featured story. Story Art September 5th Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. It Highlights the value of free and open access to information. Join the Library staff as we play: Banned or Not Banned September 28th Challenged books will be on display as we celebrate the FREEDOM TO READ

OCTOBER 31st Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO) will be providing two free passes good for up to two adult and three student tickets. 4 Page 4 The library will be accepting donations of nonperishable food items for the month of November. Five (5) cans will equal $1.00 towards your fines of not more than $5.00. FAMILY READ NIGHT Join us as we celebrate Family Read Night with Lights of Zion Puppet Extravaganza Night Of The Giant Puppets You won t want to miss these AMAZING puppets and all their glory as they read, dance, and sing with us. December 4 Holiday Recipe Sparkling Peppermint Cookies INGREDIENTS: 3 / 4 cup sugar 1 / 2 cup Butter, softened 1 large Egg 1 / 2 teaspoon vanilla 1 / 8 teaspoon peppermint extract 1 2 / 3 cups all-purpose flour 1-teaspoon cream of tartar 1 / 2 teaspoon baking soda 1 / 2 teaspoon salt 1 / 4 cup sugar 1 / 2 cup crushed mini candy canes or peppermint candies DIRECTIONS: 1. Heat oven to 350 F. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper; set aside. 2. Combine 3/4 cup sugar, butter, egg, vanilla and peppermint flavoring in bowl; beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often, until creamy. Add flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt; beat at low speed until well mixed. Stir 1/4 cup crushed candy into dough. 3. Stir remaining 1/4 cup crushed candy into 1/4 cup sugar. 4. Shape dough into 3/4-inch balls; roll in sugar mixture. Place 2 inches apart onto prepared cookie sheets. Bake 8-10 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Do not over bake. Cool 1 minute on cookie sheet; remove to cooling rack. Cool completely. Our collection has grown with many items for all young and old, so come on and take advantage of your local mobile library. If you don t own one, we encourage you to apply for a library card so you can experience Markham s Bookmobile.
