Holiday Do-It-Yourself (DIY) projects begin at the Library By Hillary Peppers With the holidays fast approaching, two questions come to mind. What will I get everyone? and How on earth will I afford it? The answer to both questions is simple: Do-It-Yourself! DIY allows you to create customized, meaningful gifts instead of buying them, and the public library should be your first stop for all Do-It-Yourself projects. Even those who have never picked up a glue gun or knitting needles can find achievable projects for the holidays and learn to make personalized gifts that will surprise and delight friends and family. This is the perfect time to discover new talents that will keep you busy all through The Bloomington Public Library has hundreds of craft and DIY books that can launch a novice or inspire a seasoned crafter. 2 Memorials, donations to BPL enjoyed by all By Karen Moen Bloomington Public Library is grateful to have been the recipient of a number of memorial items, estate contributions and donations over the years. Our newsletter devotes this space in each issue to recognizing these gifts. In Loving Memory of... Elwell Crissey ( ) Painting of Lincoln Delivering His Lost Speech Elwell Crissey, journalist, author, campaign director, public relations director, and a Bloomington resident from 1948 until his death in 1992, presented a painting illustrating his book, Lincoln s Lost Speech: The Pivot of His Career, to the Withers Public Library in The painting depicts Abraham Lincoln delivering his Lost Speech in Major s Hall. It is the work of Dr. Lloyd Ostendorf of Dayton, Ohio, and Clayton A. Nicles of Denver, Colorado. Although Elwell Crissey was born in Windsor, Missouri, he had ties to Bloomington. His grandfather, the Rev. William Stoddart Crissey, newly appointed to the Tazewell Methodist Circuit preached the first sermon by an ordained clergyman in Bloomington on November 6, 1831, at James Allin s big double log house which stood at what is now the McBarnes Building. At the time, Bloomington was a newly laid out village in the Tazewell Methodist Circuit. If you re thinking of making a gift or bequest... In the past, the Bloomington Public Library Foundation has been the recipient of several generous bequests in support of the Library. In most cases, bequests are placed in endowment funds that support the Library on an annual and ongoing basis. These endowments are permanent cornerstones for the Library. These funds ensure Twenty-five years later, on May 29, 1856, the Rev. Crissey sat in the audience as Abraham Lincoln delivered his Lost Speech in Bloomington s Major s Hall. Elwell Crissey made his way to Bloomington, after being educated in Missouri and New York, and working at the Kansas City Star and Times as well as at The Associated Press s Philadelphia Bureau. Elwell Crissey moved to Bloomington in 1948 to help direct the building and public relations for Illinois Wesleyan University, the Baby Fold, and a number of Methodist institutions. Shortly after moving to Bloomington, Elwell heard about Lincoln s famous speech, and his curiosity was piqued. He eventually donated copies of his book to a number of The painting at left depicts Lincoln s Lost Speech. It was created by Dr. Lloyd Ostendorf and Clayton A. Nicles and was given to Withers Public Library by Elwell Crissey to illustrate his book Lincoln s Lost Speech: The Pivot of His Career. libraries and schools. The painting Elwell Crissey donated to Withers Public Library is impressive, showing the crowd and detail of the hall with Abraham Lincoln superimposed in a three-dimensional effect on the stage. It brings to life the momentous effect Lincoln must have had on his audience that day as no copy of his speech exists. The painting currently hangs in an office area at Bloomington Public Library and is periodically displayed publicly during various Abraham Lincoln events and exhibits. The Library is proud to have this painting in its collection. It depicts a momentous event in the history of Bloomington which had a profound impact on the community, the state of Illinois, and our country. that the Library will have additional resources each year to respond to the most immediate and sometimes pressing needs of customers. 3 Publisher allows libraries to buy ebooks Whether or not you are aware, libraries face many hurdles in trying to acquire ebooks from some of the country s leading publishers. In the past, 6 major publishers opted to either refuse to sell ebooks to libraries or to only sell ebooks to libraries using extremely expensive sales formulas. (There are now 5 big publishers as Penguin and Random House have recently merged. However, each company maintains separate policies for selling ebooks to libraries). It was announced in late September that Penguin one of these major publishers has relented and will begin to allow libraries access to their ebooks at an affordable price. Libraries can only hope that the others will eventually follow suit. If you receive an ereader this your laptop (if you have one). All items are priced between $1$5, and many are in like-new condition. Shoppers filling wish lists should keep the shop in mind this holiday season as its offerings are available for a fraction of retail costs. If you are interested in volunteering with the Book Shoppe, please BookShoppe@BloomingtonLibrary.org. Volunteers accept donations from 10am3pm on the second Saturday of each month. Through the Library s Zinio service, patrons who possess a library card that was issued at BPL have access to 83 electronic magazines at no cost. 4 AUTHOR From Page 1 the Bloomington-Normal area on November 7 where he gave presentations about his book at both Bloomington Public Library and Normal Public Library. Playing with the Enemy tells the story of Moore s father, Gene, whose professional baseball career was stymied by World War II. Once signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers, Gene joined the Navy in 1940 and found himself playing baseball for the Navy before he eventually landed in Louisiana where he was stationed at a top-secret prisoner-of-war camp. To pass the time at the camp, the guards taught the prisoners all captured from the same German submarine how to play baseball. Director Jim Sheridan has been hired to direct and adapt the book for the big screen, and Moore believes that filming will begin in April of He shared that his son, actor Toby Moore, Gary W. Moore, author of Playing with the Enemy, spoke on November 7 at Bloomington Public Library. has been cast to play Gene Moore in that production. Gary also shared that Playing with the Enemy is now required reading for all rookie Green Bay Packers and the entire Notre Dame baseball team. It s Al Pacino s favorite book, and Gary has also autographed copies of the book at the request of George W. Bush, Ben Affleck, and Kevin Costner.
