2 The Prez Say z February 2019 brings me to my final bow as your President. I have been your President for the past 4 years and it has be such an honor and a privilege leading our organization. I have brought new bands and venues to the SDJS which was part of my responsibility to our organization. We have had concerts by Terry Myers, Dave Tatrow, Pieter Meijer, Bobby Tess, Florida Boyz, Barbury Coast JB, Seminole High School Jazz Band, The Terrier Brothers, CanAmGer JB & The Peter Graves Orchestra. We have enjoyed our concerts being performed at such grand locations as; Banquet Masters, Clearwater Country Club, The Kapok & The US Coast Guard Station. My personal goals in my terms of office were to provide our membership with the highest caliber of music and the best venues I could find. I think its safe to say I achieved those goals many times over. In closing I would like to give special thanks to our current and past Board of Directors and Committee Chairpersons for their undying support helping me make the tough decisions that had to be made to keep our club running. In addition I would like to give a special Thank You to Dave Fanning for his guidance and direction helping me run the SDJS. I could not have done any of this without the help I received from each of these members and past members; Pat Hoon, Phyllis Winans, Rick Nymeyer, Dave Fanning, Harry Meier, Gene & Lucie Mondani, Marilyn Heidtke, Mary Anderson, Barry Potts, Shyrle Pollak, Joan Drish, Lynn Shaw, Maxine Kelly & Ed King. With that said, lets have a great remaining season of music. In Your Service. Dick Maley Bill s Musical Legacy Started In The City Of New Orleans, Bill's Grandmother Ida, Was Born Near The Crescent City In The Town Of Franklin, LA. His Father, John, Was A Jazz Pianist And Banjoist On Many Of The Steamboats Of The Great "Strekfus Line," Playing In And Around New Orleans As Well As Up And Down The Mississippi And Ohio Rivers. Bill Was Also Born Near The Mississippi River In The Town Of Rock Island, Illinois. He Played Trombone In High School, College And The U.S. Navy Band. In 1971, Bill Auditioned For The Position Of Staff Musician At The New Walt Disney World Attraction In Orlando, Florida. He Was Chosen As One Of The Original 200 Staff Musicians From Over 2500 Auditioned. Bill Was A Full Time Employee At WDW For Over 12 Years. He Now Does Contract Work For Them. He Later Formed The Band And Show For Rosie O Grady s In Orlando As Well As The Ft. Lauderdale Music Hall, Auntie Mame s. The Later Won Him The Coveted Carbonel Award For The Best Night Club Show In South Florida. For Some Years, Bill Was Also A Regular Member Of The Wild Bill Davison Jazz Band, Traveling To Switzerland, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, England, South America And At Many Other Festivals And Concerts Worldwide. Bill Has Also Appeared In Concert With Billy Butterfield, Bob Crosby, Bobby Hackett, Eddie Miller, Al Hirt, Dick Hyman, Dizzy Gillespie, Mel Torme, Al Cohen, Louis Bellson, Snooky Young, Ross Tomkins, Bob Cooper, Urbie Green, Carl Fontana, Milt Hinton, Bob Haggart, Butch Miles, Buddy Morrow, Tex Benecke, Billy Maxted, And The Lawson-Haggart, World s Greatest Jazz Band. Bill s Big Band Experience Includes Bob Crosby, Tex Beneke, Buddy Morrow, Ray Charles And The Terry Myers Salute To Benny Goodman. 2

3 BAKEY & BETTY PAUL SCAVARDA ( Bakey ) A native of Los Angeles, Paul began his career on KFI Radio Theater s The Last Great Radio Show in 1975 accompanying himself on ukulele. The next few years he kept busy playing bass and banjo in various bands in and around the L.A. area including Shakey s Pizza Parlors and Six Flags Magic Mountain. He migrated to Florida at the age of 19 as a result of an offer of employment from the Walt Disney Company. While in the Orlando area, Paul performed at the famous jazz saloon, Rosie O Grady s and played mandolin with the Florida Orchestra for the New York based Joffrey Ballet. A call from famed vocalist and personality, John Davidson, led to his moving to Branson, MO for a season where he was featured in the show s opening number and joined Davidson in a banjo duet. He also held down the guitar chair in the orchestra. From there he traveled to the East Coast where he worked in the Tri-State area and performed in two Off-Broadway productions under the direction of Mr. Tom O Horgan. He met and teamed up with his wife, Theresa, during an extended engagement in Atlantic City. Together they lived and performed in Tokyo, Japan where they were held over for more than three years. Paul s abilities as an eclectic multi-instrumentalist have resulted in numerous performances and recordings throughout the United States and abroad. THERESA SCAVARDA ( Betty ) A native of Indianapolis, Theresa made her stage debut at the age of two in the arms of Yul Brenner in the touring company of The King and I. Her formative years were spent performing in numerous stage productions, cabarets and recording sessions as a background vocalist and jingle singer. While performing in Branson, MO, she was offered a six week contract at the Showboat Casino in Atlantic City, fronting her own trad jazz show band. The six week contract lasted 7 years. It was there that she met and teamed up with her husband, Paul. After the casino lights dimmed, an offer from the Walt Disney Company took the couple to perform in Tokyo, Japan. Theresa has been a featured vocalist at the Sancy Snow Jazz Festival in France as well as The Arizona Classic Jazz Festival, Seaside, Oregon and on the high seas for Jazzdagen Tours. Theresa is also a highly sought after vocal coach and musical theatre instructor in the Orlando area. 3

4 MARCH 17, :30pm to 5pm Dick s WYSIWYG Jazz Band have performed locally since 1995 and he has quite a following of fans. Dicks stable of musicians is a Who s Who of national talent. Only the best will do for Dicks band. Charlie Bertini, trumpet; Dave MacKenzie, Saxes; Randy Morris, piano; Jay Mueller, bass and Dick on Drums. Welcome to the wonderful world of "WYSIWYG". What is WYSIWYG? (What You See Is What You get), and what you get is professional. Dick has put together a fantastic group of musicians to create a musical style that is all their own. they perform Dixieland, Big Band, Creole and Cajun styles of music, which are sure to get the joint-ajumpin. You may find yourself dancing in the aisles, or tapin' your toes to the songs and styles of Billy Maxted, The World s Greatest Jazz band, Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, Louis Prima and even the great Buddy Rich. It didn t take long before "WYSIWYG" was a regular at the Suncoast Dixieland Jazz Society in Clearwater, Fl. The band finally hit the big time and Dick wanted to fine-tune his stable of talent and he chose Orlando s cream of the crop. WYSIWYG s repertoire is a mixture of classic Dixieland with a large smattering of big band classics. Taking it one step further, Dick, added some Cajun and creole style songs to his music library, however, the main staple of his music is still in the swing era and Dixieland. With this newly formed synergy of talent it's no wonder "WYSIWYG" will become a staple at jazz festivals across the country and abroad. Whatever your thirst for jazz, be sure that "WYSIWYG" will provide what your taste may require. 4

6 To All Members & Friends. As January rapidly approaches, I am saddened to say that April 7th, 2019 may be our last & final concert for the Suncoast Dixieland Jazz Society, Inc., The Board of Directors and I have made a difficult decision to dissolve the Suncoast Dixieland Jazz Society, Inc., At the end of this year, after serving for four years, I will be unable to continue to serve as President of the Board of Directors. Since there have been no nominations at this time for a President and a Treasurer of the Board of Directors, we have decided that at the end of April 2019 we will have no choice but to close our doors on The Suncoast Dixieland Jazz Society. With that said at our upcoming General Meeting on February 17th, if there are no volunteers for President and Treasurer to step in to hold these positions, I will make a motion to our general membership that we will dissolve the Corporation at the end of April. I had posted in the last edition of the Jazz Me News a form asking for volunteers to hold an Office of the Board of Directors, and Committee chairpersons, to which I have had no replies or responses at this time. If there are any who would be willing to hold one of the offices listed on that form, especially President and Treasurer (as these position will be vacant), then we could take a vote at the General Membership Meeting to keep the club going with the new President and Treasurer elect. This would be the best possible outcome that we could hope for. However, if we do not receive any nomination for President and Treasurer, then the motion will be made by me to dissolve the Corporation. Again it has been an honor and a privilege serving you as President of the Suncoast Dixieland Jazz Society and I will support your decision in February. If we should have nominations for President and treasurer I will be available to assist in any way possible, including attending any meeting of the Board of Directors to help facilitate and ease the transition.
