1 Northwestern University Information Technology Building Infrastructure Requirements for Communication Facilities ( January 2010) I. Introduction This document presents the current Northwestern University standards for communications wiring. They are intended for use in locations where Students, Staff and Faculty are located. These proprietary specifications are provided to in planning spaces, budgeting for communications infrastructure, and as the technical description suitable for use in Requests for Proposal. These specifications used in conjunction with published current TIA standards, present a communications wiring system, which will anticipate technological developments over the next several years. As technology changes, this document will be reviewed annually so as to remain the most current and effective information available. Any aspects of communications wiring, which are not sufficiently addressed in this document, shall be brought to the attention of Northwestern University Information Technology. Steps will be taken to remedy omissions in a timely manner. II. General Communications Cabling NUIT shall provide specific location and placement for all Communications Cabling. 1. Any penetration of rated construction shall not change the rating of the construction system. 2. Space planners and designers should plan for the inclusion of one standard communications outlet for every 75 net square feet. Erring on high side has proven beneficial to the University. 3. Intra building communications cabling shall be provided, connecting the building Intermediate Distribution Frame (IDF), located in the Main Building Telecommunications Room to the outlets servicing the communications equipment located throughout the building. The intra building cabling system includes the building IDF, the house cables (HSE) which are also known as the riser cables, the local house cables (LHSE) which interconnect Telecommunications Rooms or terminals, and the wiring between any of the above locations to the communications outlets which is known as station or horizontal wiring. 4. Underground entry. The building point of entry for underground communication cables shall be located in a room of at least 100 square feet located on the lower or basement

2 floor of the building. Incoming communications cables shall be terminated in this room according to the type of cable and the appropriate communication/electrical standards and codes. a. Underground fiber optic cables shall be Corning ALTOS (dryblock) cable. Fiber optic entrance cable will be terminated in a rack mounted Corning CCH 04U fiber optic distribution panel. Each building shall have a minimum of 48 strands of singlemode fiber terminating on LC connectors. A green stranded #12 AWG will follow all Fiber Optic paths for the entire length of the cable. NUIT will determine the actual required fiber optic count based on the intended use and square footage of the building. b. Underground Copper Cables will be installed in the Building Telecommunications Room on Standard 110 blocks attached to the fireproof plywood backboard. A minimum of 100 pair PE 89 cable is required for any building. NUIT Telecom & Network Services will consult with the FM Project Manager concerning exact cable sizes and origination and termination for the new cable. c. Entrance Pathway shall be installed for all new facilities and in cases where the entrance room is being relocated. A minimum of 3 trade size, schedule 40 4 ducts shall be installed. The actual number installed during the constructuion ahall be the actual number necessary (minimum 1 for copper and 1 for fiber) plus 1 duct for growth. Entrance path conduits shall be adjoined to the conduit system in the immediate area of the facility. 5. Riser system. The building entry point shall be aligned vertically under the individual floor Telecommunications Rooms wherever possible in order to provide a cable riser system that will enable easy access to each floor. Riser conduit or sleeves must be a minimum of 4" in diameter, and there must be one empty spare sleeve between each floor of a building at the time of building turnover for future expansion. If the horizontal station runs from the Telecommunications Room to the individual outlet exceed 290 cable feet, a second basement IDF and riser system is necessary. If the second riser is employed, there must be a minimum of one 4" conduit installed between the two IDFs and one 12" cable tray system interconnecting the Telecommunications Rooms on each floor. In buildings with more than one Telecommunications Room per floor, Northwestern University Information Technology Telecommunications shall specify which room outlets will be served from which Telecommunications Room. The default shall be the nearest Telecommunications room.. 6. Fiber optic riser cables. Fiber optic riser cables shall be installed in all new and renovated buildings. 3 a. The fiber optic cable shall be a minimum of 24 strands of Corning singlemode fiber are installed to each floor's Telecommunications Room from the Building Telecommunications Room. All fiber installed are Corning Cable Systems "MIC" p/n 024E for riser and indoor use. NUIT will determine the actual required fiber optic count based on the square footage and use of the area served by the floor telecommunications room. b. All fiber optic underground and riser cables shall be terminated at the Main Building Telecommunications Room utilizing Corning CCH 04U fiber optic patching panel with LC connectors for singlemode fiber. c. The fiber optic house cable system shall be terminated at the Telecommunications Room with a Corning CCH 04P enclosure. The CCH 04P enclosure shall be equipped with an appropriate number of CCH CP24 A9 connector panels. 7. Recycling of Abandoned Cable. Unused, undocumented and otherwise abandoned cables, SHALL be removed and recycled prior to the completion of the project. NUIT Telecom & Network Services is available to assist in the identification of these cables. Certification of removal and recycling can be obtained at no charge by coordinating with DuPont Abandoned Cable FUELOAD ( ). The definition of Abandoned Cable is contained in NEC 2002 Articles: 640, 645, 725, 760, 770, 800, 810, 820 and 830. Further definition is contained in NFPA 75, NFPA 76 and NFPA 90A. III. IV VoIP preparation. Voice communications for all new buildings, and renovated spaces that NUIT has upgraded and deemed by publication VoIP ready, shall only receive VoIP services. A minimum of one jack in each work space shall be prepared for VoIP voice communications. This preparation consists of a POE (power over Ethernet) port activation for each instance. Newly established or relocated telecommunications rooms shall be equipped with a sufficiently sized Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) including batteries for a two hour emergency run time. NUIT TNS (Field Operations) shall assist in the sizing and specification of this device. Telecommunications Rooms The Telecommunications Room located on each floor of a building is the transition point between the vertical and the horizontal communications cable distribution pathways. Each Telecommunications Room must be capable of housing equipment including active network electronic components, uninterruptable power supply and batteries, copper, coaxial and fiber optic terminations as well as associated cross connection wiring. Telecommunications Room space must be determined as early as possible in the design of new and renovated buildings. 4 communications function. Because of the sensitive nature of communications equipment that is housed in these areas, shared use of Telecommunications Rooms, is not allowed. 1. In the planning of Telecommunications Room space, each shall have three walls covered with 3/4" fire retardant plywood (painted white), a minimum of two Panduit #CMR19X84 communications racks mounted 36" from the wall, equipped with 12" cable raceway both across the racks to the riser sleeve wall and to the cable entrance/egress for the room. Both sides of each rack installed, shall have Panduit part # WMPVHDF45E (6") vertical wire managers attached. NUIT shall approve the design and execution of all Telecommunications rooms. 1. A single Telecommunications Room may serve three or more floors of a typical building providing the following parameters and factors are met: a. The size of the Telecommunications Room is at least 100 square feet. b. The dead weight floor loading exceeds 150 pounds per square foot. c. There is adequate 24 X 365 cooling and ventilation. Typically, 17,000 btu s per hour will be introduced into the space and must be kept at in a temperature range of 70 o 78 o f.non condensing. d. No telecommunications cable length being served from the room is in excess of 290 feet. e. The Telecommunications Room is located near the core (center) of the building f. The Telecommunications room is located and accessible from a public hallway. If the building has only a basement and up to three additional floors with a total area less than 15,000 square feet, and the furthest outlet is less than 290 cable feet from the Building Telecommunications Room, then the building Telecommunications Room may be used as the communication room for the entire building. NUIT TNS is available to consult with building designers to collapse Building Backbone infrastructure wherever possible. 3. Based upon the planning figure of one workstation / standard communications outlet per 75 sq. ft., the general rule for sizing individual Telecommunications Rooms is: a. Floor area under 5,000 sq. ft. Telecommunications Room size 10' by 8' b. Floor area up to 10,000 sq. ft. Telecommunications Room size 10' by 10' c. Floor area under 15,000 sq. ft. Telecommunications Room size 10' by 16' The dimensions of the Telecommunications Room may be adjusted within practical limits. No single dimension shall be reduced to less than eight feet. Thus, a 10' by 11' Telecommunications Room could be revised to 8' by 14'. Page: 4 Northwestern University Information Technology issued: JULY 2009

5 In no circumstance, shall a Telecommunications Room be smaller than 6' X 8'. Copper Riser Cable termination points located in the Telecommunications Rooms will be mounted on the plywood backboards using Standard 110 style hardware. 110 termination blocks will be mounted in vertical columns. If more than four blocks are required, a second column will be started. Metal or plastic rings or posts will be provided as an aid to the installation of jumper wire. Fiber optic terminations will be attached to installed Panduit frames as required. Fiber will be terminated on Corning CCH04U hardware, using CCH CP24 A9 panels and LC compatible connectors for singlemode fiber. Coaxial Cable terminations and connections will be dressed to the plywood backboard. 5. Lighting in each Telecommunications Room must be a minimum of 60 foot candles measured 3' above the finished floor and mounted as strip lights along the long walls at an 8 minimum above the finished floor. A false ceiling shall not be installed. 6. The access door to each Telecommunications Room must be a minimum of 36" wide and 84" high, without doorsill and hinged to open outward or slide side to side. The door must be equipped with a Marlok electronic key locking device coded to NUIT space. 7. All floors, walls and ceiling surfaces must be treated to eliminate dust. Finishes shall be White to enhance room lighting. Each Telecommunications room shall be equipped with a minimum of one 20A 110v circuit, equipped with one quad outlet, one L5 20 R twistlock, and one 208v L6 30 R twistlock. When possible all circuits shall be on a generator fed EM circuit. These power outlets shall be placed at 18 a.f.f. and located just behind the equipment rack. Nominal convenience outlets should be distributed throughout the room. Access shall be made available to the main building ground bus bar. 8. In Buildings where water flow Fire protection is required, Sprinkler heads must be equipped with wire cages in order to prevent accidental operation. Water charged Sprinkler heads shall not have a trip rating less than 210 o F 9. A positive air pressure shall be maintained in the Telecommunications Room, when active electronics are present, consideration must be given to providing a sufficient number of air changes to dissipate heat generated in the Telecommunications Room and maintain temperatures equal to adjacent office areas. Temperature and Humidity ranges shall not exceed a range of +70 o through +78 o F non condensing Typically, 17,000 btu s per hour will be introduced into the space. 6 10. Based on square footage of the closet and number of network ports to be served from a communications room, NUIT shall provide an estimate of the actual heat load based on building programming documents.. Page: 6 Northwestern University Information Technology issued: JULY 2009

9 V Fiber Optics Each new building is required to have a minimum of 48 strands 8.3/125 Singlemode fiber, Corning Altos/Freedm p/n 024RS A20 entering the Building Telecommunications Room. The beginning of this entrance fiber run is from the next regional routing and switching site on Campus. Telecom and Network Services will provide information on the exact location of any particular site as well as known cable routing. On the inside of each building, a minimum of 24 strands of Corning Singlemode p/n 048E Fiber Optic cable are installed to each floor s Telecommunications Room from the Building Telecommunications room. This riser cable is Corning MIC riser rated 24 strand part number 024E When multiple Telecommunications Rooms are used on a floor, a minimum of 24 strands of singlemode tie each Telecommunications Room together. NUIT TNS will define all fiber counts and placement during the design phase of all projects All single mode fiber is terminated on LC compatible connectors. In the Telecommunications Room system Fiber distribution id achieved using Corning Cable Systems "CCH 04U" housings mounted on the equipment side of the floor mounted racks. Single mode terminations will be completed on CCH CP24 A9 panels Inner duct (aka ENT pipe) is NOT used inside of buildings at Northwestern University. Testing Each strand of fiber must be tested both with a Power Meter and with an OTDR. All test equipment must have been certified in the past 12 months. Attenuation losses from the chart below are considered acceptable performance standards. All tests will be conducted in the modes described below. Single mode 8.3/125 Each connector.4db 1300nm light.51db / km 1550nm light.4db / km for runs under 500 feet a 1.3 db 1550nm is acceptable Testing shall be completed with both a certified power meter operating at the specified frequencies and a certified OTDR. OTDR traces shall be conducted from both directions. The data will be organized for presentation as follows: Name:Strand 1 from A to B, then immediately following: Strand 1 from B to A. 10 A test document will be devised in Microsoft Excel in the following format: Location A Location B Strand Loss@1300nm Loss@1550nm Length of Cable Size of Cable Cable tests will only be accepted on CD s or DVD s professionally and permanently labeled with the project name, test area covered, test date and contractor name. Certification of the test devices shall accompany all test results Labeling Refer to Section VIII. Specifications Refer to Corning Cable Systems specification for all additional fiber information. VI. Communications Outlet Graphics A minimum of one Northwestern University Standard Communications Outlet or Service Jack shall be installed at each client workstation or office. This outlet consists of three high speed module inserts (currently denoted by yellow color). This configuration is always installed in a two gang faceplate allowing for additional modules. Depending on the actual needs of any individual space, faceplates may be purchased in the two gang configuration with two to ten openings for inserts. Each module represents a unique four pair cable from the outlet to the Telecommunications Room. Installation of multiple services on any four pair cable is prohibited. 11 Other applicable symbols are as follows: W Wall mounted telephone: (48" above finished floor) F Floor Mounted Service Outlet: C Ceiling Mounted Service Outlet Jack ID Labeling Designers of new and remodeled spaces shall designate each communications outlet on the construction documents with a unique number. Refer to section VIII for labeling details. Northwestern University adheres to a modified version of the TIA standard 606 for jack nomenclature. To achieve this with a reasonable amount of clarity, each Communications Outlet beginning at the entrance to a particular room and moving in a clockwise manner will be designated as follows: Room Number, Module number. So the first Standard Communications Outlet in room 101 is designated: 101 1, and The wall phone clockwise from that outlet is designated: And the next Standard Communications Outlet is designated: 101 5, and The identification of the type of wire being used is done through the color of the insert (yellow for Category 5E.) Each of the wires is always a four pair wire, therefore covering the issues in the 606 standard relating to the number of wire pairs. VII. Horizontal Wiring Systems, Devices, Testing and Part Numbers Coaxial Cabling At times, based on customer requests, coaxial cable for Cable TV may be installed as part of horizontal cabling. This wiring will be installed within the Panduit MiniCom jack system and Page: 11 Northwestern University Information Technology issued: JULY 2009

12 raceways detailed below. Further details concerning coaxial cable are found in the section IX labeled "RF Television (CATV) Distribution". Each office and/or workstation in a building is to be wired with a minimum of one Standard Communications Outlet. Laboratories and other large open areas shall be wired with a minimum of one Standard Communications Outlet for each workstation. Applicable city electrical codes and building codes must be followed for installation of all communication facilities. Care shall be taken to allow for adequate cabling facilities in areas of planned expansion. Adjustments may be made based upon the specific applications or use of a given space. The entire horizontal cabling system must exceed the TIA 568B wiring standards. Wireless Access Points New construction and major renovations must include ubiquitous wireless coverage. A request should be made early in the design process for NUIT engineers to access the space and the proposed usage to determine wireless requirements for the project. The contractor shall install, terminate and test a single wire Category 5E jack. This jack shall be located; 1) just above a suspended ceiling 2) in a shallow 2 gang junction box of a hard ceiling and designated by the architect with a C adjacent to the standard triangle depicting a communications outlet. NUIT will install the Wireless Access Point and activate the switch port. No Horizontal Communications Cable shall exceed 90 meters or 290 feet. At the current time, Optical Fiber Cables are NOT being installed as a standard part of horizontal cabling. 10 Gigabit per second Cabling Systems Recent advances in technology now allow copper cabling to perform at data speeds of 10 gigabits per second. These systems are commonly known as Category 6A systems. These systems are best installed for use in: Server Rooms and Research Cluster Computing Centers. These systems are best installed where all jack outlets are in patch panels both at the computing equipment and at the network equipment. Category 6A Cabling Systems shall be installed with the strictest conformance to ANSI/TIA 568 B.2 ad10 (Augmented Category 6) the minimum trade size conduit for use in these systems is 1 ¼ Nominal cable diameter is.295. It is important in a 6A system that the entire system is provided by a single manufacturer. NUIT has chosen Blue as the color code for Category 6A assemblies. Blue Belden part number 10GX32006 bonded pair Cable, Blue Belden AX Jacks and Black Belden AX RU Patch Panels shall be used in all Category 6A applications at Northwestern University. Cables shall be loosely bundled in groups of no more than 12 cables. Testing shall be in accordance with ANSI/TIA 568 B.2 ad10 specifications including alien crosstalk. A minimum of 5 cables will be tested for alien crosstalk from each bundle of cables. These tests shall be on the 5 longest length cables that are adjacent on the patch panel. The contractor may wish to use the following 3 tools in the installation: Connecting/Insertion Tool AX100749, Termination Station AX101852, and the Release Tool AX Page: 12 Northwestern University Information Technology issued: JULY 2009

13 1. Horizontal distribution of communication cables on each floor shall be supported in a minimum of 12" wide fully supported cable tray. This tray must originate from the individual floor Telecommunications Room and provide continuous support to all rooms on that floor. There must be a minimum of 12" clearance between all communication cable trays and any fluorescent light fixtures or other electrical ballasts. 2. Conduit shall be provided from the cable tray system to each communication outlet location. This conduit must be a minimum of 3/4" in diameter unless Category 6A cabling is used (see 10 Gigabit per second Cabling Systems, above). A maximum of two 90 degree bends are allowed in a conduit run before a pull box is required. Conduit bends must be no less than 6 inch radius of curvature. Up to three communication outlets may be served from a single conduit run providing the conduit meets the following sizing criteria: a. One outlet 3/4" minimum diameter b. Two outlets downstream 1 " minimum diameter c. Three outlets downstream 1 1/4" minimum diameter Standard Communication Outlet. Each communication outlet shall be equipped with an 11b electrical box. The 11b boxes must be installed oriented vertically 18" above the finished floor and fitted with double duplex plaster rings and an appropriate cover plate. Other mounting heights may be required for specific applications. In cases where Communications Facilities must be flush mounted in a floor, Thomas and Betts model 665 SC (UPC ) is recommended due to its superior space for bend radius. The Thomas and Betts 664 (UPC S ) are adequate for installations when only a single gang of communications and power is specified. The"KI" (Krueger Industries) power up device shall be used for Communications and Power in applications where Telecommunications is necessary in desktops. Panduit "Minicom" series CJ5E88GYL inserts will be installed in the Powerups. This product is NOT a definition of furniture products, but specifically, Telecommunication installations. 3. Station wiring is most generally PVC jacketed cable. Standard wiring to each communication outlet will be three 4 pair cables and a pull tape. The three service cables will be bright yellow jacketed, Category 5E, Belden DataTwist 350 part # 1700A 4 pair, 24 AWG. In situations where plenum cables are required, Belden DataTwist 350 part # 1701A 4 pair, 24 AWG. Standard communication outlets will be outfitted minimally with a Panduit two gang (double duplex) stainless steel faceplate p/n CFP4S 2G containing three yellow receptacles Panduit p/n CJ5E88GYL, and one blank module Panduit p/n CMBIW X. The three 4 pair cables will be terminated at the outlet jack and the patch panel in Page: 13 Northwestern University Information Technology issued: JULY 2009

14 accordance with TIA 568A wiring standards. All Cables (yellow) will also follow TIA Category 5E as tested by Underwriters Laboratories. The Category 5E wire will be terminated on Panduit patch panels, part number CPPA 48FMWBL (48 port) Patch Panels shall be interpolated with Panduit horizontal cable management p/n CMPHF2. This cable will be terminated at the patch panel in accordance with Category 5E standards, configured as TIA 568A. Cables from the Communications Outlets to the Patch Panels shall be attached to the rear of the vertical cable management and the rear of the racks Wall telephones. For a wall phone, public safety phone, or pay phone, a single 1900 box with a simplex plaster ring shall be used. The 1900 box shall be mounted vertically 48" above the finished floor or as required by code. A 3/4" conduit shall connect the 1900 box to the cable tray system. A single, bright yellow jacketed, Category 5E, Belden DataTwist 350 part # 1700A 4 pair, 24 AWG cable will be installed and terminated on a flush mounted Panduit Stainless Steel RJ 45 wall telephone jack, part number 5WP5E. Public Telephone enclosures and booths are considered architectural, thus the specification, installation and maintenance of these devices is the responsibility of Northwestern University Facilities Management Design and Construction. Testing and Documentation Each Category 5E cable will be tested using an appropriate TIA Level 3, 250 MHz testing device. Headroom shall be above 4 db in all instances. Comprehensive reports for each cable at each communications outlet, detailing the results of all TIA Category 5E tests, Using Permanent Link Test mode at 250 MHz shall be submitted on completion and/or turnover of the project. No marginal (*PASS) will be accepted. All test results shall be presented in the native format of the testing device being used. E.g. *.flw for Fluke. Cable tests will only be accepted on CD s or DVD s professionally and permanently labeled with the project name, test area covered, test date and contractor name. 16 Underground coaxial distribution cables will be installed without splices or connectors unless otherwise specified. Sufficient cable shall be run into cable vaults, manholes, pedestals, etc., in order to allow splicing and further distribution at a future time. Coaxial cable ends shall be protected against water ingress by moisture sealing tape of heat shrink sealing caps. All coaxial cable splice locations shall be in buildings or other protected structures. Direct burial splices are not approved, and shall not be utilized VIII Labeling Explanation of terms: Telco room This term refers to the Telecommunications Room that all wires are consolidated to that service the individual rooms. Jack This term refers to the single receptacle that a customer used telecommunications device would be plugged into. Communications Outlet This term refers to the device that houses the cable and protects the jacks. Port This term refers to the equipment end of the jack, which is found in the Telecommunications Room on a patch panel. The port is on the other end of the cable where you would find the jack. Switch port This term refers to an individual receptacle found on the electronic switching equipment. Patch cord This term refers to the cord that connects the customer used telecommunications device to the jack, or the cord that connects the port to the switch port Fiber shelf This term refers to the housing that supports the fiber cables. Fiber panel This term refers to the group of receptacles that individual fiber strands connect to. Labeling of jacks at the Communications Outlet Each jack of a Communications Outlet will be individually labeled with three eighths of an inch tall label consisting of two lines of text of black ink on a white background. This label will be placed on the outlet as close to the jack as possible. The floor, room number, and the series number of that jack within the room will be printed on the first line. When data or voice circuits are to be installed, each jack used will be labeled with either the data circuit number or the telephone number just above the outlet ID label. This label will be of the same size and width as the ID label. Labeling of Emergency phone call boxes Emergency call boxes will be labeled with a three eights tall labels inside the call box behind the actual phone. The following information will be placed in the call box on individual labels: Call box number Phone number LEN Underground cable assignments On the top of the Telephone Housing (or the front, just above the phone set, for a column mount) the following will be placed on a ¾ label in four rows. Call Box Number, LEN, UG cable and Pair, and DN Labeling of ports Each port of a patch panel in a Telecommunications Room will be labeled with three eighths of an inch tall label consisting of one line of text of black ink on a white background. This line of text will document the floor, room number and series number of the jack that this port supports. The length of the label is not to exceed 0.65, which is the width of a Panduit jack. Labeling of patch cords Each end of the patch cord used in Telecommunications room will be labeled with three fourths of an inch wide label of black ink on a white background wrapped around the outer jacket. This label will be no less than one inch in length, and will consist of the data circuit ID (EDC/CDC), or the telephone number. Only patch cords that are used in Telecommunications rooms will be labeled. All other patch and line cords will remain blank. Outlet jack color designations Cable types presently in use at Northwestern University are made apparent by the different color jacks that are used both in outlets and in patch panels. Under no circumstances will different color inserts be used on the same cable. 18 Labeling of fiber shelves Fiber shelves will be labeled with the series number of that shelf within the same equipment rack or room if no rack exists. This label may be either three eights or one half of an inch in height. Labeling of fiber panels Fiber panels shall include labels to designate each fiber panel in use. This label may be either three eights or one half of an inch in height. Information on this label will be: Room number of far end of cable Equipment rack number of far end of cable Fiber shelf number of far end of cable Fiber panel designation of far end of cable Labeling of fiber patch cords Fiber patch cords will be labeled with a circuit identification number. This label will be threefourths of an inch tall with the circuit ID repeated over a one inch length of the label. This label is to be wrapped around the fiber patch cord in the same manner as a self laminated sticker would. Labeling of Telecommunications room switches Switches installed in Telco rooms will be labeled for identification purposes. This label may be either three eights or three fourths of an inch in height. Information on this label will be: IP address of switch Name of switch Card and port number of equipment that serves this switch This information will be included on each side of the switch with the exception of the rear where no label is required. Only the IP address is required for the front as lack of space limits restricts use of multiple labels. Labeling of equipment racks Floor and wall mounted equipment racks will be labeled for identification purposes. This label will be three fourths of an inch tall with a font type large enough so letters and numbers are clearly visible from a distance of at least six feet. Information on this label will be: room number of Telecommunications room and sequence number of equipment rack. Example: G = G166 is the room number of Telecommunications room,.01 is the equipment rack number. IX. University Housing Applications Horizontal Distribution System Each student room will be equipped with PANDUIT mini com jack components as described. Generally a single University Standard Outlet (refer to Chapter VII ) is adequate. At minimum Page: 18 Northwestern University Information Technology issued: JULY 2009

19 there must be one Category 5E jack for each student designated for the room plus 2 spare jacks. Stainless Steel faceplates and Blank inserts will be sized and used as necessary based on the capacity of the outlet. Each horizontal Service cable will be bright yellow jacketed, Category 5E, Belden DataTwist 350 part #1700A, 4 pair, 24 AWG cable will be installed to each CATEGORY 5E Jack module in the Service Outlet. Terminations for the data cable will be made on PANDUIT "mini com" TIA 568A equipment as specified below. The number of jacks to be installed in any student s room will equal the number of students living in that room, plus two additional Yellow Ethernet outlets. All jack modules will be wired in accordance with TIA specification 568A. No telecommunications cable may exceed 290 feet in length. Telecommunications cables will be terminated on PANDUIT CJ5E88G YL (jacks arranged and inserted PANDUIT CPPA 48FMWBL, 48 port patch panels. Patch Panels will be mounted on Panduit 19X.24 freestanding relay racks.) On the patch panel side, each jack will be marked with the Room Number and sequentially for each room a number 1,2,3,etc. Further details on labeling in section VIII. All Jacks will be tested and documented for category 5E compliance wire mapping and end to end distance with appropriate test equipment. The contractor will develop a form (both electronic and printed) in concert with NU IT Telecommunications for the presentation of the test data. The form shall identify the Room/Cable number, pair under test, technician, test date and results. Comments will be reserved for resolution to cables not passing the initial test. Jack identification numbers will equal the room number where the jack is located. 20 X. RF Television (CATV) Distribution This section applies to RF television distribution cabling within buildings only. See Section II.5 for specification of underground cabling for television distribution. This specification is not applicable to video or closed circuit TV distribution and shall not be applied to such installations. 1. Cable runs shall be laid out so that cable length from the TV tap to distribution point does not exceed 300 feet. Coaxial cable shall be Belden 1189A (Quad Shield RG 6). Cables shall be continuous runs from the distribution point to the TV tap. In line splicing is not acceptable. 2. Coaxial cable connectors shall be threaded, CATV grade types such as the following. Connectors that use compression rings, hex crimps, or tool less attachment means are not acceptable. Connectors designed to press on rather than threading on to F connectors are also not acceptable. The approved Connector is the Digicon 6Q 3. Wall taps shall be feed through (No Loss) type threaded to accept an "F" connector. Where the TV tap is to occupy the same panel and backbox as other telecommunications jacks, (Panduit) the TV tap shall utilize the same mounting system and standards as the other telecommunications jacks. 4. Splitters and Couplers a. Splitters shall be Regal "GRSxDGx" series. Design maximum frequency must be 1000 MHz or greater. Radiation shielding must be 110 db minimum. Where splitters are to be mounted on a flat surface, "vertical" version splitters shall be used (i.e. the output ports shall be perpendicular to the mounting surface). b. "T" type directional couplers shall be Regal RDCT10 series. Design maximum frequency must be 1000 MHz or greater. Radiation shielding must be 110 db minimum. c. "L" type directional couplers shall not be used. d. Directional multi taps shall not be used. 5. Terminators. Line termination resistors shall be Gilbert GTR59A. All unused ports, including test ports, shall be terminated with approved 75 ohm termination resistors. TV taps do not require termination. 6. Amplifiers. 21 7. Other passive or active equipment. Equipment not specifically described in this specification may not be attached to the coaxial cable system without prior written permission from Northwestern University Information Technology Telecommunications. Vendors are required to submit technical literature and supporting comments to Northwestern University Information Technology Telecommunications prior to proposing such equipment. 8. Construction practices. a. All coaxial cable shall be installed according to the manufacturer's specifications. Appropriate care shall be taken to prevent crush or cut damage to the cable. Manufacturer specified bend radii shall be maintained. b. Cable preparation and connector application shall be done only with tools approved for use with the connector. All connections must be made wrench tight to prevent signal leakage and maintain efficiency. Connections must not be over tightened to the point of damaging the connector. XI.
