1 Litcham School The Word 21 February Ski Wagrain 2018 Students enjoyed a ski trip to Wagrain during the half term break. Going on the ski trip was one of the best experiences of my life. I made so many new friends from other years and had so much fun. I went from not being able to ski at all to being good enough to ski down the red slopes. Definitely worth it! 2 World Book Day Thursday 1 st March Helen Moss author visit - Primary phase Our Author in Residence Helen Moss will be visiting Litcham School on Monday 26 th February to get us in the mood for World Book Day (WBD), which is on Thursday March 1 st. Helen will be sharing her love of reading and books across the Primary phase. In the morning she will give a presentation to the whole of the school, followed by an interactive writing workshop with Kingfishers class. In the afternoon, she will be working with Tawny Owls class exploring the theme of storytelling. Helen is the writer and creator of both the Island Adventure and Secrets of the Tombs series of books. There will be an opportunity to buy signed copies of Helen s books during lunchtime if students would like to. Prices range from 4.99 to If your child would like to purchase a book, please make sure they bring some money in on the day, cash rather than a cheque please. Of course, if your child already owns any of Helen s books, they can bring them along and she will be happy to sign them as well. Julian Sedgwick author visit Secondary phase Author Julian Sedgwick will be visiting the Secondary phase on Wednesday 28 th February, to give a presentation to the whole of Year 7. Julian is the well-known writer of both the Mysterium and Ghosts of Shanghai series, and we are delighted to welcome him back to our school to celebrate WBD. During this one-hour event, the children will be transported to the world of the Mysterium and to 1920 s Shanghai. Let s just say there may be a few surprises in store, so be prepared for mystery, adventure and a trick or two delivered out of his well-travelled circus suitcase. At break time there will be an opportunity for pupils to buy copies of Julian s books and to have them signed and dedicated by him. If your child would like to purchase a book, they can pre-order them from the library at the discounted price of 6.00 or bring some money in on the day, cash rather than a cheque please. Copies of his books are available to view in the library. World Book Day Tokens Students will shortly be receiving a WBD 1 book token. These may be used towards the purchase of books/audio books at participating bookshops from February 26 th to Sunday 25 th March or exchanged for one of 10 exclusive WBD books. For the first time this year, teenagers can purchase a full-length fiction book, from a selection of five titles, for only 1.50 using their book token. If you are unable to visit a bookshop, you can use your voucher to purchase a book from the latest Primary Book Club magazine or Teen Book Club catalogue, available from the secondary library. Please return your orders to the library at the secondary phase, or place in the post box at reception in the primary phase, by Friday 16 th March. Secondary phase World Book Day Fair Our Creative Writing Community Ambassadors will be holding a fundraising event in the library at lunchtime on Thursday 1 st March. The students are raising money for St Martins Housing Trust, which is a homeless charity based in Norwich. To raise funds, the students will be holding a second hand book sale, selling cakes and refreshments and running a variety of book related games and activities with many prizes to be won! So please don t forget to bring some money in with you on the day and support them in their fundraising efforts. The Secondary phase will also be running a book competition during the course of next week to mark WBD called Judge a Book by its Cover. The competition is free to enter and the winning students will receive a book of their choice, from the latest Teen Book Club magazine, to the value of 10. Simply pick up a quiz sheet from the library. Entries should be returned to Mrs Berry by Friday 9th March. World Book Day Website Don t forget to visit the WBD website which is full of suggestions to help you make the most of books, share the titles you love with others, free downloads and ideas of what to read next. For those of you who enjoy writing there is a brilliant web-based writing tool called Storycraft, providing you with invaluable information on how to plan and structure your story, character development, using illustrations and editing. There is expert help from top authors including Andy Stanton, Chris Riddell, Malorie Blackman, Michelle Paver and Cressida Cowell. You can also take a look at The Imagination Channel, and view bite size video clips of authors and illustrators such as Jonathan Meres and David Baddiel, to find out where they really get their inspiration from. Alternatively listen to a World of Stories online, featuring audio excerpts of essential books brought to life by a host of brilliant storytellers. There are numerous competitions, games and quizzes to take part in, including a competition for budding artists to design a national book token. The winner will receive 200 worth of book tokens for themselves and 500 for the school. You can also download the new book-clubbing video where you can watch young people, authors and vloggers talk about their favourite books, how they share them and what they are going to read next. There is also information and tips on bookfolding DIY, careers in publishing, booky podcasts and book trailers. Simply log on the WBD website and explore! Mrs Berry

4 Careers Networking Event On the 1 st February a group of students attended a careers networking event in Norwich. The event was focused around careers in the professional industry. The purpose of the event was to learn more about careers in the above industry and to learn about the best entry routes into the careers featured. Another purpose of the event was to make links with people and businesses that could help us later. The event also aimed to introduce us to important skills that are needed for applying for jobs. We took part in a skills session hosted by Serena Fordham (creator of Glow virtual Assistants). The session showed us how to successfully complete CVs and interview skills. We also took part in a careers speed networking event. We were given five minutes to put our questions to a business. After five minutes we moved on to a different company. I felt this part of the event was really successful as it allowed us to interact with a lot of different companies. It really helped widen my perspective of opportunities available to me, as I was introduced to a lot of careers that I had previously not be aware of. The short time limit really helped us to hone our questioning. As well as being introduced to different careers we were also introduced to different forms of post 16 education. We talked to a representative of the County Council about apprenticeships. We were also able to talk to a member of the UEA about university. This too was very interesting as again it showed the different routes into work available to us. The thing I think I took away from the event most was the idea that when choosing a career you should choose first and foremost something that you love. Overall I found the event very interesting and useful. Amelia Platt 10B Chess Problem This week s chess problem, open to students in all years. First correct solution to me gets a bar of chocolate. Mr Clark Year 7 Parents Evening Reminder to bring your small change on Thursday 22nd February. There will be an opportunity to purchase cakes, drinks, biscuits and bookmarks. All proceeds will go to St Martins Housing Trust for their work helping homeless people. Thank you. Felix Platt on behalf of the Community Ambassadors
