2 Summer Reading There are two parts to the MSMS 6 th grade Summer Reading program. First All incoming 6 th graders are required to read The Watsons Go To Birmingham by Christopher Paul and complete a manila folder book report due on Thursday, September 2. The guidelines and scoring rubric for this assignment are on the next two pages of this packet. Second You may read other books for the MSMS Summer Reading Olympian program. This reading is not required but we encourage you to read over the summer. If you want to be recognized as a MSMS Summer Reading Olympian, you must read and complete a minimum of three short book reports. You may read and complete a Reading Olympian Report Form on any age-appropriate book for the MSMS Reading Olympian program. Please look at our suggested book list for some ideas. We encourage you to read books on our list, but you should feel free to read other books as well. The suggested book list and Report Form is in this packet as well. Each Olympian will have a chance to earn a reading medal. Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals will be awarded. The number of books you have read and the successful completion of the Report Forms will determine your eligibility for a medal. Please turn in your MSMS Summer Reading Olympian Report Forms to your new homeroom teacher at Marshall Simonds. The deadline for turning in your forms for the Reading Olympians will be Friday, September 17. 3 Summer Reading REQUIRED Book Report During the summer you will complete the following five steps on a manila file folder for the book The Watsons Go To Birmingham by Christopher Paul. Please read the book and follow the steps below to successfully complete this report. This assignment will be due on Thursday, September 2. Book Report Folders To assemble: On the front cover of the folder - Create your own picture of a favorite scene or character from the book (no computer graphics). At the top of the cover write in the title and author of the book. In the bottom right-hand corner of the cover, write your name and homeroom. On the inside of the file folder (left side) - Write in your own words, a three-paragraph summary of the book. Make sure to include events from the beginning, middle and end of the story. The summary should not be more than one page. The font must be size 12. On the inside of the folder (right side) - As you read your book, look up words whose meanings you don't know. List alphabetically 10 words and their definitions that were unfamiliar to you when you first read the book. On the back of the folder - In your own words, give a little information about the author. Information may come from the back of the book, web pages, library books, etc. Be sure to cite the source (web address, book title, etc.) at the bottom of the page. Write the book title on the file folder tab and be sure to underline it! Include the Rubric (next page of packet) in your Book Report Folder! All written work must be typed or written neatly in blue or black ink. Please staple, tape, or glue items neatly onto the file folder. Remember the font size should be 12. SUMMER 2010
