6 Technology Read the paragraphs below and look for words with Greek and Latin roots. Science and technology use many words with Greek and Latin roots. If you know the meanings of those roots, you can often figure out what the words mean. Here are some useful roots. Greek roots include tele, distant ; photo, light ; graph, to write ; and meter, measure. Latin roots include spec, to see ; scrib/script, to write ; rupt, to break ; port, to carry ; ject, to throw, and dict, to speak. Roots can be combined with each other and with other words. For example, a photometer (light, measure) is a tool for measuring light. A photoflash (light, flash) is the light that flashes when you take a photograph. Transcribe (over, write) means to move data from one system to another. Transport means to move an object from one place to another. Teleport means to move something (distant, carry) without physically carrying it. A telemeter (distant, measure) is a tool for measuring from a distance. A telegraph (distant, write) is a coded message sent a long distance over wires. Here s one phototelegraphy (light, distant, write). That s a really old word for sending images long distances over telephone wires. The new word is shorter fax. Combine some roots and see what words you can come up with Write the words that have the roots tele, photo, or meter Write the words that have the roots port or scrib. 227
