I had writte the rough draft of a ovel about the crazy, particular, sometimes heroic ad sometimes dowright despicable people who discovered electricity, but I was stumped o what to do ext. Should I try to get a publisher? Start a blog? Hire a editor? Luckily, I was havig luch with my fried Kim Nalley. Kim has bee the headlier at the Fillmore Jazz Festival almost every year for the last 15 years, so she kows about etertaiig. I was lucky eough to meet her through paretig. Our older kids wet to the Sherith Israel s preschool o Califoria Street, ad ow our youger kids go there together. Kim immediately kew what to do: Kathy, you like to talk. Start a vlog, a video series. That started a quest to trasform my ideas oto the scree, albeit a small oe. For moths, fear ad isecurity circled like sharks, ad were my oly compaios. The ew apartmet quickly became oppressive as Ae Gross I pouded o my keyboard, so I took to poudig the sidewalk o ad aroud Fillmore Street. I explored arrow Orbe, Perie ad Wilmot alleys with plot twists ad quirky characters whirlig i my brai. I became that aoyig perso i the back pew of St. Dom s who came i from the fog just to eat cady bought at Mollie Stoe s. I watched the dogs wrestle i Alta Plaza, togues lollig happily, while distat sailboats o the bay drifted betwee the masios. My hope was to fid the best library chair, the perfect cafe, the softest tuft of grass i the park where I could comfortably write. Istead I became Elki s flaeuse, aimlessly waderig. O ay give Suday, its small, warm sactuary welcomes Japaese Americas, Chiese Americas ad Americas of assorted other heritages. I a eighborhood where houses sell i the multiple millios, the stately Victoria home of Christ Church offers a uique lik to the good ad the bad of Sa Fracisco s past, as well as its costatly chagig future. Fouded by Nippo Sei Ko Kai i 1895, it was the first Japaese Christia missio of the Aglica Commuio i America. Origially located at 421 Powell Street, the missio soo moved to 709 Geary to share a three-story buildig with Fukui- Kai, the Japaese Gospel Society, established i From there, the missio moved to several other locatios before settlig i at 1732 Buchaa Street from 1920 to Early o, Sei Ko Kai was recogized as a orgaized missio of the Episcopal Diocese of Califoria, comig uder the sposorship of Triity Episcopal ad later Grace Cathedral. The actors begi ot with a playwright s script, but with a stellar short story ad yes, they covey every sigle word, through iovative dramatizatio. Mulleix has directed a umber of the compay s plays, icludig stories by Alice Muro, Elizabeth Strout ad Lorrie Moore. From August 8 through September 2, i celebratio of the compay s 25th seaso, he s directig Tobias Wolff s Deep Kiss, oe-half of Aiversary! Stories by Tobias Wolff ad George Sauders, at Z Space at 450 Florida Street. How does a perso become a director? I got a MFA i actig from UC Davis, worked for years as a actor i the Bay Area ad bega teachig I m still teachig at Chabot College. Mostly I teach actig. Oe day the head of the theater departmet asked if I would direct a play. I did t kow how to direct, but I gaied some experiece doig that. I was workig with Word for Word a lot as a actor, ad Word for Word s Joel Mulleix fids ispiratio while walkig his dog i Alta Plaza Park. i, maybe, 2005 they asked me to co-direct The Isabel Fish, by Julie Orriger. How did that go? My co-director was Delia MacDougall, who s directig the Sauders story. Her father was ill, ad she had to step away, so I eded up directig a lot of that play. The Word for Word started hirig me to direct. Maybe the first thig I did o my ow was for the ow-defuct Travelig Jewish Theatre. From that, I started gettig directig jobs. I m still directig plays at the college. How do you go about creatig a script from a short story? I my early days with Word for Word, we did t eve have a prited form to work with; we would decide who says what i rehearsal. Sice the, with limited rehearsal time, whe I come i I ve already decided: This lie, the mother says; this lie, the fried says. I ve broke the story ito a play form. But as you rehearse, it chages. Maybe somebody comes i with a idea. Whe we were doig Bullet i the Brai for More Stories by Tobias Wolff, we spet hours ad hours o oe paragraph. What about figurig out how the actors portray objects, like a bus or a car? A good example is the red Miata i the Wolff story Dow to Boe. Wolff s work does t led itself to somethig really clever, sice it does t have as may big dramatic evets although we re tryig to create a momet of rock climbig. That ll be fu to figure out. The war was virtually over. The thigs that had spawed radical commuities were dissipatig. I had exhausted my back-to-ature fatasy by spedig some time i Medocio with a fried who had reted a house deep i the woods. Terry was a paiter. I was fiishig my secod ovel. I was also clearig my head after edig the worst relatioship of my life. The it started raiig icessatly. I came back to my place o Masoic Street ad Terry eded up ear Fillmore ad Califoria. There was really o reaso to come here i those days. But that s what gave it its charm. It was t the New Fillmore the. It defiitely was t Lower Pacific Heights. It was a ukow corer of the Fillmore just some rudow Victoria apartmets ad a quiet shoppig street with a few atique shops ad vitage clothig stores that attracted people from Pacific Heights durig the day. The eighborhood was mostly black. The rets were cheap. That s what drew a ew tribe of studets, paiters, ovelists, poets, actors ad dacers. The commuity ceter was the Dout Hole, ow Tacobar, o the corer of Fillmore ad Califoria. There were coffee shops i the city the, ad a couple of cafes i North Beach. That s where you got somethig exotic like a cappuccio. Otherwise it was coffee, douts ad sadwiches. Coffee at the Dout Hole cost 21 cets. The Dout Hole had a orage ad white iterior with glarig overhead lights ad a checkerboard floor i black ad white. It had Formica tables ad padded chairs. For all its simplicity, it was a beehive of iterestig coversatios with all sorts of people. We d show up i the morig ad talk for a couple of hours before headig off to our private pursuits, the show up agai i the afteroo. Hardly ayoe seemed to be workig. There was a recessio uderway. I was teachig a fictio writig class oe ight a week at Sa Fracisco State. Terry collected disability because he had broke his back i the Navy whe his truck wet over a cliff. Hery specialized i paitigs that imitated Russia Orthodox art, a tribute to his Russia gradmother. There was also a youg hippie couple who reopeed the Clay Theatre as a secod-ru art house, featurig double bills of Fellii films or a weeklog Charlie Chapli festival. They did everythig themselves, from sweepig the place to workig the ticket widow. It was a cold ad raiy witer, as witers usually were the. I loved to sik ito a log afteroo at a cheap matiee for a cozy escape, my legs hooked over the seat i frot of me, because there were so few people i the theater. Ad of course there was Jack, a perpetually out-ofwork actor, who had a old fire truck he liked to drive aroud the eighborhood with a few of us crammed ito the frot seat. Otherwise it was used for dates ad could usually be see pulled up o the sidewalk ear Jack s flat o Wilmot Street. He started his ow practice i 1946, after servig i World War II. Esherick taught at UC Berkeley from 1952 to 1985, ad later formed a practice with George Homsey, Peter Dodge ad Charles Davis. With these parters, Esherick collaborated o umerous houses at Sea Rach, repurposed the Caery at Fisherma s Wharf, desiged Steveso College at UC Sata Cruz ad completed the award-wiig Moterey Bay Aquarium. Esherick was awarded the AIA Gold Medal i 1989 for his exceptioal cotributio to architecture. The woodframe house sits o a hefty cocrete slab with thick colum supports ad meaders dow the hill toward its Gree Street eighbor. The two-story, simple Vallejo Street facade hides a much larger ad more itricate home. The house is a strog cotrast to the older staid brick home o the east. Pacific Height s Raycliff Terrace was developed over a 10-year period, with several master architects desigig homes for importat cliets. Situated o previously udeveloped lots off Pacific Aveue betwee Divisadero ad Broderick, Joh ad Sally Woodbridge observed of Raycliff Terrace that it was a opportuity to compare recet works of several architects close at had. Esherick s cotributio at 75 Raycliff Terrace was built i 1951: a woodframe, two-story-over-garage dwellig with vertical redwood togue ad groove sidig ad large expases of widows, icludig a ribbo of trasom widows at the south facade ad a courtyard created by a frot setback desiged for well-kow Bay Area cotractor Robert Cahill ad his wife Vivia. The Cahills retured to Esherick i the early 1970s to desig their elaborate Woodside estate. Also completed i 1951 was 3700 Washigto Street, at Spruce, i Presidio Heights. Of Esherick s desig, Joh ad Sally Woodbridge oted: The Bay Regio bledig of iformality ad elegace is show here i the uexpected but successful combiatio of bar sidig ad double hug widows with delicate iro work ad a formal etry. Esherick s cliets for this house were Richard ad Rhoda Goldma, whose philathropic geerosity is reflected across the city ad i the aual Goldma Evirometal Prize. The Goldma House, which wraps aroud a garde court alog Spruce Street, is set back from Washigto Street with the garage o the west side. The etry court, with its simple cocrete pillars, termiates i the glazed widow wall of the livig room s south face. Author Marc Treib oted that although realized early i his career, the Goldma House stads as oe of Esherick s great works, ad it demostrates the sophisticatio already achieved i his coceptualizatio ad realizatio of buildigs. Today, mature ladscapig provides oly a glimpse of the house from the corer, but from Washigto Street, you get a peek ito the otable etry court. Aother of Esherick s importat houses is 2610 Scott Street. This 1962 home built for Niels Larse, a cotractor, is the epitome of Esherick s hillside boxes. Its overhagig, projectig, glazed bay makes a strog statemet at the frot facade. The house features a stuig iterior spiral staircase that shows Esherick s attetio to detail ad the exceptioal workmaship ofte foud i his iteriors. Joe Esherick s houses i Pacific Heights ad Presidio Heights provide a view ito the desig aesthetic of post-war Sa Fracisco. His work is ofte said to bridge the earlier work of the First Bay Traditio with that of the later third geeratio of architects, may of whom he collaborated with at Sea Rach. Esherick s ability to work o difficult, previously udeveloped sites ad provide egagig moder facades that fit withi the cotext of earlier architectural styles made him a much sought after architect. Treib s aptly titled study, Appropriate: The Houses of Joseph Esherick, is a good read, providig both a cotextual ad detailed history of Esherick s moder dwelligs. 15 FAREWELL The cat who could write After our fried William died, we helped empty out his house o Buchaa Street ad put it o the market. His dowstairs teat was movig, ad the pregat cat that lived mostly uder the house ad o the street was left without a home. It tured out o oe wated a pregat cat ot the earby Pets Ulimited, or the SPCA, or aybody else. So we took her home. The she had 11 kittes o 7/11, o less. This did ot seem lucky, at least ot for us, ow with a doze cats. Although she was busy eough already, eatig ad ursig ad groomig, agai ad agai ad agai, we put her to work writig for the eighborhood ewspaper. Her ametag ad bylie said Saralee. It tured out she was a taleted writer with a gift for delicate phrasig ad otig the wry detail. I ve called this beautiful eighborhood home my etire life more tha two years ow, although a proper lady ever tells her age, she bega her first story. These were ot her first kittes. A momet of ardor with a attetive tabby left me with eight kittes to ted ad me just a kitte myself, she wrote. No sooer had the kids left the est tha I was out the widow agai. A small partay with a cool gray log-haired tomcat ad I soo foud myself with ie little oes this time. A visit to the vet capped her prolific output at 28 kitties. Her stories i the New Fillmore made motherhood soud like a joy. I have to say, this might be my most beautiful brood yet, she wrote. She told her story so well that all of her kittes foud ew homes ad, i the process, we became related by cat to may of our eighbors. Her kids would write o Mother s Day ad o their birthdays. Nearly everywhere we wet to a local restaurat, store, church or coffee shop we d get a update o Saralee s kids. She tured her stories ito a book, available o Amazo. Six moths earlier, my fiacee had give the rig back a devastatig blow that occurred weeks after I gave up a well-payig job to write fulltime. Broke-hearted, half-mad ad facig a ucertai fiacial picture, I fled from Sata Barbara to Sa Fracisco. At the time, it was more of a escape tha ay sort of pla for the future. For better or worse, I ve ever had may logterm goals. I just eeded to get my head together. Oce healthy, I could have clarity about the ext step. But as I foud out, sometimes destiy provides the relief. Who eeds a persoal coach, Jugia therapy, psychedelic jourey, or self-help book whe there s Peet s Coffee at Sacrameto ad Fillmore? I d go there to write, ad I oticed the same gatherig of grizzled philosophers holdig court each morig. Aythig seemed to be ope for aalysis: politics, books, film, music, travel, capitalism, sciece, history, religio, relatioships, eighborhood gossip. Fierce debate was peppered with lighthearted persoal jabs, a little yellig, ad a lot of laughter. It was better tha mere discussio it was bullshittig of the highest order. Oe by oe I met Fred, Guy, Pete, Kamero, Hilly, Richard, Mal, Tude, Duae ad Dey. They were itelliget ad opiioated, ad like all deep thikers, had the ideal skepticism-optimism ratio. More importatly, they were friedly ad welcomig. Oce they realized I had somethig to say albeit ofte bizarre I became part of the club ad, by extesio, part of the commuity. Those characters helped me climb out of the wreckage of the past ad build a ew life. But I have more tha the crew at Peet s to thak. My gratitude exteds to the etire eighborhood. Almost every day for 16 years, I sat o the bech outside Peet s. I spet thousads of hours there talkig with frieds, wavig to familiar faces as they walked by, greetig the parade of dogs ad pretedig to work. It was tough to get much doe whe, every five miutes, I was iterrupted by eighbor after eighbor for a chat: with Joseph to debate the lack of fudametals i pro basketball; with Jesse to rap about 1960s ad 1970s soul music; with Ke to aalyze a avat-garde jazz record; with Cathlee, Eri or Cary to pla our first perso How a Coffee Shop Saved My Life MINA PAHLEVAN ext excursio to the Missio for a burrito. O the surface I was breakig up with the old eighborhood, but I was really followig a dream a actual log-term pla of sorts. For years I would sped a few days a week there, goig to the beach ad workig at my satellite office at Java Beach Cafe. I grew up o the coast ad have always bee more comfortable i a slow-paced beach culture. Destiy had iterveed agai. By dumb luck, I had come across a oce-i-a-lifetime apartmet for ret: o top of a hill, a block from the sea, aroud the corer from Lad s Ed, with sweepig views of the Those characters helped me climb out of the wreckage of the past ad build a ew life. Tearig my heart out tured out to be the best thig she could ve doe for me. I was free to write a fresh chapter of my life oe that brought me dozes of frieds ad coutless good memories.
