1 Libraries NI Celebrates Creativity Month March 2013 Creativity is contagious. Pass it on. Albert Einstein

2 Creativity Month is an initiative of the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure and is held annually to stimulate new thinking and new collaborations to help creative people, creative ideas and creative businesses to emerge and flourish. Libraries NI is delighted to be participating in Creativity Month for the third successive year. This year s programme is based on the theme of Creative Connections and will demonstrate the opportunities presented by the creative sector. Events include talks, demonstrations, exhibitions, craft sessions, drama workshops for children, author visits, storytelling evenings, fashion workshops, writing, music and much more. Our programme offers the opportunity to participate in what promises to be an exciting and varied programme of free events throughout March. We would like to invite people of all ages to celebrate this month and be inspired to think creatively. Libraries offer so much more than books, so I d like to encourage you to call into a library near you or go to the Libraries NI website at for more information. Irene Knox Chief Executive

17 Writer-in- Residence There aren t many places left in the world where you can come in out of the cold and sit comfortably for hours on end without anyone looking at you with suspicion or asking you to pay for the privilege. There are very few places where the staff encourage you to take things away without money changing hands. Admittedly, in the case of the library, you are expected to return those things, but not before you've had the full benefit of what they have to offer, and isn t that a wonder in itself? Every time a book is borrowed, an exchange of trust is made, and this is possible because a book is a fully self-chargeable device. All it takes to restart it is to open the cover, the experience is as fresh for the one hundredth user as it is for the first. The public lending library is one of the most truly democratic, open and accessible institutions that we have left and I am delighted to be engaged as Writer-in- Residence for March 2013.
