1 A festival of events celebrating the 200th birthday of Charles Dickens
2 Introduction from Barnardo s JANUARY FEBRUARY Barnardo s NI is delighted to be the partner charity for Dickens 2012 NI. Charles Dickens and our founder Dr Thomas Barnardo had much in common, both were philanthropists in nineteenth century England and both shocked Victorian society by exposing poverty and exploitation Dickens through the social commentary in his novels and Dr Barnardo by starting homes for children affected by poverty. Today Barnardo s as a children s charity carries on the legacy of Dr Barnardo s work. According to official figures there are 100,000 children in Northern Ireland living in poverty and one in five leave primary school with below standard literacy and numeracy skills. Barnardo s is working to address that but it is only with the support of organisations like Dickens 2012 NI that we can really make a difference. The Dickens 2012 NI programme of events is exciting and varied and Barnardo s NI is delighted to be an associated partner. We wish you all the very best for a successful year and thank you for believing in children. Lynda Wilson Director Barnardo s NI What the Dickens exhibition Until 29th February Monday Saturday, 10am 4.30pm Larne Museum & Arts Centre 2 Victoria Road, Larne, BT40 1RN t: w: e: Caldwellj@larne.gov.uk Dickens Family Art Sessions George Cukor, (1935) Sunday 5th February 3.20pm Dear friends, Dickens 2012 NI was established to organise a fabulous, fun-filled, year-long festival of events, celebrating the two-hundredth birthday of the greatest ever novelist in our language: Charles Dickens. His work transcends time and place, language and culture. He has a massive contemporary influence throughout the world, and his writings continue to inspire film, television, radio, theatre, art, and literature. Here you will find a rich and diverse calendar of events, appealing to enthusiasts of all ages. Our aim is to provide a lasting cultural, social, and charitable legacy for the people of Northern Ireland. As Mr Sleary said in Dickens s novel Hard Times, People must be amused! To this end, we bring you films, theatre performances, exhibitions, musical events, lectures, read-a-thons, dramatic readings, and many programmes specifically for young people. We want you to be entertained and excited by the spirit of fun that was uniquely dear to Dickens s heart. So go on enjoy!
