1 Cue Sheet The Newsletter of the Western Ontario Drama League February 2012 Vol. 35 No. 2 WODL is on the web at Travelling Adjudicator s report Submitted by Gordon Davis February 19, 2012 Preliminary Adjudicator for WODL 2012 My work as Preliminary Adjudicator for the Western Ontario Drama League Festival 2011/12 is almost done and I do want to say, sincerely, how much I have enjoyed watching and listening to the work of each and every community group. My thanks go out to each one for sharing. I hope that my adjudications were enjoyable and helpful. I apologize to people that I did not mention as individuals or did not give the feedback they were looking for. I saw the work of well over 600 performers, technicians, designers, directors, musicians, and crew members and no matter how much preparation I do, and no matter how closely I watch and listen; there are just some things I miss. As I now give out nominations and awards, keep in mind that I am limited by the number I'm allowed to give. But theatre is a "group" thing - no one can do it alone. If I give a nomination or award to members of your group, remember that you are a part of it too. They needed you. Without you they could not have done what they did. If an award is given to someone involved in your production, embrace it as a whole group. It is yours as well. There will be disappointment as I go through the awards and if your main reason for entering this Festival was to win an award or the privilege of "going on" to the March Festival, then that disappointment is not going to go away quickly. But if you remember what I told all of you in the Private Adjudications about using the experience and the advice to take you to another level then eventually you are going to grow from this experience and become even better at what you do. I am going to begin by naming the five plays that will be showcased at the March Festival. There was such a variety of styles amongst the "in festival" participants, that it was difficult to compare. Please know that I appreciated each and everyone's work. The first play on the week's playbill will be the beautifully designed and brilliantly acted production of "Storm Warning" by the Kincardine Theatre Guild The second night will showcase the carefully directed and sad but funny production of "The Anger in Ernest and Ernestine" by K-W Little Theatre Wednesday night will see the hilarious results of lovemaking gone wrong in "Self-Help" by the Elora Community Theatre The next night will take everyone into a world of cruelty and horror as Theatre Intrigue from Windsor presents their gripping production of "Extremities" And to conclude the week's celebration of theatre, the stunningly beautiful production of "Picasso at the Lapine Agile" will be presented by Guelph Little Theatre The prefestival awards with the adjudicator s comments will be found below. I extend my congratulations to all winners and nominees, as well as to the five productions going on to festival. The WODL board looks forward to welcoming you to Sarnia. Information about Festival tickets and hotel booking may be found on the WODL website - or on the Theatre Sarnia website - under events. The festival weeks itinerary at both the theatre and hotel is listed later in this newsletter I really wish for every group, continued enjoyment and success in the magical world we call theatre. 1
