6 55 th CSC AWARDS PROGRAM President s MEssage Welcome to the 55th CSC annual Awards Gala. Tonight is the night when we celebrate our craft by rejoicing and honouring those who have made outstanding contributions to the art of cinematography. In case you haven t noticed, there has been a slight change to the name of our awards show. We no longer use the calendar year as a label, but instead each gala will now be signified by the chronological age of our organization and celebration. This has been done to acknowledge our past, to let us know where we stand in the present and to always point towards the future. That s why this year is the 55th CSC Annual Awards Gala. Technology in our industry continues to advance in leaps and bounds. What is new today can easily be eclipsed by even newer technology tomorrow. Who would have thought that we d be able to watch movies, television shows and sports on the internet, let alone on our cell phones. By the way, tonight s proceedings are being broadcast live on the internet. Working in a constantly changing technological landscape is a challenge for all of us in the film and television industry. But, one steadfast constant, is the artistry and the vision of the cinematographer as the creator and keeper of the image. Nowhere is that more evident than this evening. Truly masters of their craft, this year s nominees have much to crow about as Canada s top cinematic talents. Their work, simply put, is stellar and spectacular. I congratulate all of them on their accomplishments! The 55th CSC Awards Gala would be a mere shadow of itself without our sponsors. Their unflagging and generous support of the CSC, not only tonight, but with all our endeavours, allows us to vigorously pursue our goal, to promote and foster the art of cinematography. I thank all of our sponsors for their assistance, cooperation and collaboration. Together, we can continuously work towards building a healthy and vibrant film and television industry that benefits us all. An event such as tonight s, just doesn t happen. It requires the co-ordinated effort and hard work of many groups and people. It all begins with the CSC volunteer executive board, of which I m proud to be a member. The success 4
7 of this awards gala, as with all of our events, is born through the direction and guidance of the board. I would to thank everyone on the executive for their time and commitment. I would also like to salute this year s jury members for a job well done on a difficult task. Sitting in judgement of your peers, to pick tonight s nominees and winners is not easy. We owe a great debt of gratitude to all our jury members for their time and expertise. I would also like to acknowledge the work of our Awards Committee, chaired by Ron Stannett csc. Ron, along with Technical Awards chair John Hodgson, committee members Bert Dunk csc ASC, Robert Bocking csc and George Hosek csc, kept us on the straight and narrow with the rules, regulations and procedures. A very special thank you to CSC Executive Director Susan Saranchuk who pulls this awards show together each and every year through her talented leadership. And to executive assistant Karen Longland for her hard work and dedication in helping produce this year s awards gala. To everyone involved in making The 55th Annual Awards Gala a success, your efforts as always are much appreciated. To everyone here tonight, thank you for attending and celebrating the best in cinematography! Enjoy the evening! Joan Hutton csc 5

21 2012 CSC AWARDS Congratulations to all of the nominees VANCOUVER TORONTO ATLANTIC
22 Congratulations and Thank You! Clairmont Camera would like to congratulate all of the 2012 CSC Award Winners for a job well done! We d also like to thank the CSC for bestowing the 2012 Bill Hilson Award to our company president, Denny Clairmont. 23 REMARKS FROM THE AWARDS CHAIR 2012 After accepting the positions of CSC co-vice president and awards chair it quickly became evident to me that you re only as good as the people around you. And the people with whom I ve worked with in the past year have been the best. The CSC, as a non-profit organization, relies heavily on volunteers and corporate sponsorship to make the wheels of progress turn. I would like to give a very heartfelt thank you to all the sponsors of the 55th CSC Awards Gala. Your support and interest in the CSC is very much appreciated. For all of you at this evening s Gala, please take a moment to look over our Gala Sponsor list to acknowledge their contributions to our event. Also, please remember, that the support by many of our sponsors goes beyond tonight. It is the year round commitment to the CSC that allows us to pursue endeavors such as training courses and publishing the Canadian Cinematographer magazine. There were over 150 submissions to our awards competition this year and the caliber of work was terrific. It s a challenge picking the best from the best, but our juries stepped up to the plate with alacrity. I thank all the jury members for their time and devotion to this important task. We are one of the few awards shows that still accept 35mm submissions in its features category. I would like to thank Technicolor for the use of their excellent 35mm facility. I would also like to thank Sheridan College s Screen Industries Research and Training Centre for the use of their ground-breaking facilities to screen the non-print feature entries. As a sign of the times, less than half of the feature entries were 35mm prints. Thank you SONY for providing state of the art equipment which allowed us to judge all the other categories at the CSC Clubhouse. A special note of appreciation goes to Soho for allowing us to use an editing suite and to Soho s talented editor, David Oliver, for editing the awards gala show reel. I also thank my fellow awards committee members, Award s Technical Chair John Hodgson, Robert Bocking csc, Bert Dunk csc ASC, George Hosek csc and Joan Hutton csc for their time, input and guidance with this year s competition. I would also like to give a big round of applause to the CSC Executive Director Susan Saranchuk for producing this special evening and to Karen Longland plus all the volunteers who make the awards show a success. This awards show would not exist if it were not for all the cinematographers who submitted their work for judging. I say thank you for your trust in the CSC and your commitment to your craft. In closing, thank you to everyone attending the 55 th CSC Annual Awards Gala and helping celebrate the art of cinematography. Ron Stannett csc CSC Co-Vice President and Awards Chair 21
