4 PRGRM NE tehen Chatman s ong o Joys or iani and Percussion oli, Chorus (divisi) and rchestra was commissioned by the Calgary Philharmonic ociety with assistance rom the Canada Council. he 21-minute work in seven movements, remiered in Calgary May 2, 2014, was originally conceived as a coanion work eethoven s yhony No. 9. ased on ragments o Walt Whitman s Leaves o Grass, ong o Joys shares several characteristics with the eethoven masteriece, including identical orchestral instrumentation and a critical role o the chorus. More iortantly, both works celebrate humanity and the sirit o love: the universal brotherhood o man through joy and the love o the heavenly ather.
