5 New Videos Bring Total to More Than 100 A number of new videotapes have arrived at the Services Division lending library in the last few months, bringing the total number up to 123 descriptive and non-descriptive videotape titles. Here are the new titles. Those with ND after them are not descriptive videos. In action/adventure: Speed, True Lies; in children's: Casper, Pocahontas, Winnie the Pooh; in comedy: The Santa Clause, Toy Story; in Drama: Scent of a Woman, Waiting to Exhale; in romance: LA Story; in westerns: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid; and in educational: Relief from Back Pain-ND, Vision Exercises for Adults-ND and Vision Exercises for Children-ND. The same checkout policies remain in force. Consumers who come to the Services Division office may check out up to three videotapes at one time, for a total of one week. Consumers living in rural areas or who do not have ready access to CWAB or public transportation services may request that one videotape be mailed to their home address, for a period of up to two weeks. Remember, please rewind all videotapes before returning them to the Services Division. Repeated failure to do so may result in a loss of check-out privileges. Consumers can call the Services Division by telephone and request up to a three day extension on any videotape loan. Happy Birthday! March birthdays: Sadie McGhee, Kay Bowen, Franky Caldwell, Harold Hill, Elliot Powers, John Kolasa, Christina Patterson, Lorene Stephens, Paul Slone, Marjorie Wheatley, Britt Day, Betty Vanover, Myrtis Walker, Deloris Thompson, Ted Childs Jr., Ruby Wetherholt, Troy Arthur, Lindsey Clagg, Grace Rose, Harlen Johnson, Bea Castle, Ona Perkins, Lydia Damron, Alberta Key, Andrew Fuller. Telephone Scam Beware of returning calls with an 809 area code. These are in the Caribbean, and scam artists are using them to defraud unwary phone users. Bottom line: Don't return the call unless you recognize the number. Page 2

6 Recipes This month, instead of printing several recipes, we are going to pass on some very useful information about fruits and fruit juices, from "Large Print Cooking for a Healthy Life." Fresh fruits are very wholesome desserts. Fruits contain more fiber than fruit juices. Apricots and prunes; banana nut, whole wheat blueberry and date bran muffins; and apple and strawberry blintzes, are excellent desserts. Some examples of diabetic exchanges for fruits are listed below. Each item on the list equals 1 exchange. Fresh Fruits Apple Apricots Banana Blackberries Blueberries Cantaloupe Cherries Figs Grapefruit Grapes Honeydew melon Kiwi Mango Nectarine Orange Papaya Peach Pear Pineapple Plum Raspberries Strawberries Tangerines Watermelon 1/2 medium apple (4-inches in diameter) 4 medium, fresh 1 /2 banana (9-inches long) 314 cup 314 cup 1 cup of cubes 12 raw 2 (fresh, 2-inches in diameter) 1/2 medium 15 small 1 cup of cubes 1 large 12 small 1 nectarine (1 1 /2-inches in diameter) 1 orange (2 1 /2-inches in diameter) 1 cup of cubes 1 (2 3/4-inches in diameter) 1/2 large 314 cup 2 (2-inches in diameter) 1 cup, fresh 1 1 /4 cup, whole, fresh 2 (2 1 /2-inches in diameter) 1 1 /4 cups of cubes Page 3

7 Recipes continued Dried Fruits Apples Apricots Dates Figs Prunes Raisins Fruit Juices Apple juice Cranberry juice Grapefruit juice Grape juice Orange juice Pineapple juice Prune juice 4 rings 7 halves 2 1/2 medium 1 1/2 medium 3 medium 2 tablespoons 1/2 cup 1/3 cup 1/2 cup 1/3 cup 1/2 cup 1/2 cup 1/3 cup More Low Vision Cooking Tips These helpful tips are taken from "Large Print Recipes for a Healthy Life." 1) When slicing vegetables, carefully feel which side of the knife is sharp. The sharp side of most paring knives will have a ridge where the blade joins the handle. Place the vegetables on a bread board, curl finger tips under on the hand holding the vegetables and cut away from your fingers. 2) Organize all items in your kitchen so you know where to find them. Return to the same place to store. 3) Work in the kitchen with good lighting. 4) Place herbs and spices in alphabetical order and keep them in the same order. If you have difficultly reading the labels, you can find them by counting the number of containers from left to right. 5) A set of measuring spoons kept together will be helpful. Some people like the type with long handles to reach to the bottom of the containers. Page 4

10 DVS Guides Every three months, the Descriptive Video Service issues a guide of upcoming described television movies and series. It is available in print, braille or via telephone. Shows on Public Broadcasting System WPBY channel 33, that have the second audio program include: The American Experience, Mobil Masterpiece Theater, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, Mystery!, Nature, NOVA and Scientific American Frontiers. Some of those movies include: North By Northwest, Feb. 9, 5:30 p.m.; Mogambo, Feb. 16; Gunga Din, Feb. 23; and An American in Paris, March 1. The quarterly catalog is free. For complete information, call DVS at , or write to DVS, WGBH-TV, 125 Western Ave., Boston, MA Virus Alert Viruses are running amok - and they're not the kind that will give you a cold or the flu. Computer viruses are programs that "infect" a computer's hard drive or operating systems, causing a variety of damage that can include loss of data and destruction of the hard drive. There are thousands of viruses out there, and more are being written every day. Sam McClanahan, CWAB's adaptive technologist, said at least four consumer's computer systems have been infected recently. One had more than 30 different viruses on it. Viruses can enter a computer several ways: from an infected disk, from an infected program or via an item taken from the Internet or World Wide Web. The Services Division has virus protection programs that can inoculate loaned computer systems against viruses. If you would like more information on how to protect your CWAB loaned computer, call Mcclanahan at Page 7
