This year we will use the August 23 rd breakfast, 8:30 a.m. as our vehicle to express our appreciation. Officer Brandon Beauvais will present the program about dealing with loitering in the area and security measures in general. All general meetings are open to anyone. Most full members are contacted to remind them of the meetings. Please let us know if you 8th Annual Dancing with the Pueblo Starz a Hit An enthusiastic audience of more than 200 cheered on eight dance teams throughout their competition to be named best dance team at the July 28 Dancing with the Pueblo Starz event held at the Pueblo Convention Center. Boxers, cowboys, 80 s disco and fire were just a few themes accompanying the moves of the teams. Judges William Alexander, Beth Gladney and Steve Shirley selected team Zach Swearingen and Megan Miller s disco routine as the best of the night. Attendees awarded Pueblo Bank s Nicole Colby and Shantel Trujillo the People s Choice for their boxer dance. The dance for those in attendance after the competition had great participation and dancers of all ages seemed to enjoy themselves. We had more than 50 auction packages for sale at the event. 2 Street Talk by Margaret Ward-Masias Late Summer Events Bring Visitors to Downtown In the next six weeks a lot of people will be coming into Downtown. The State Fair Parade, August 25, 10 a.m., packs a lot of visitors along Union Avenue and Main Street as many as four to six deep in places, it is broadcast on cable live and again for a few days after. The Chile and Frijoles Festival will be September this year. Estimates of attendance at this three day event are as high as 150,000 people from throughout the state (and probably surrounding states too) all here to purchase Pueblo produce. For the past 30 years, the Pueblo Downtown Association has concentrated efforts on streetscape to make the area look inviting to visitors. From the wrought iron planters, trash receptacles and benches to lighted holiday decorations, and now traffic control cabinets, the Pueblo Downtown Association has invested nearly $160,000 in funds to make the area a better environment to work in and visit. The total is for current pieces on our inventory, some items have worn out and been removed. While that may not sound like much, remember that we are a voluntary membership organization. We have raised money the old fashioned way through hard work; just ask any of our current or past board members just how much we expect from them. All of that work could be for naught if the area is not kept looking clean and cared for. I am asking that you make sure that trash is picked up from the sidewalks and gutters near your business. You should also make sure any trash receptacles in the area are not overflowing; the trash is picked up but not every day, if the container near your business is too full why not place it in your own dumpster? The Downtown Association is not a business improvement district; the dues from 150 members do not give us enough funds to provide daily maintenance to the entire 40+ blocks in the area where most of our members are located. It has been dry until the past week or so, weeds have not been as much of a problem as it has been some years. One of the most important things you can do to make visiting Downtown Pueblo a great experience is to be willing to help visitors who do not know their way around the city. Surely everyone knows about El Pueblo History Museum, the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center and the Rawlings Library, but can you tell someone how to get to Rosemount Museum, the Pueblo Zoo, the Steelworks Museum or the Historic Aircraft Museum. Be sure you remember two relatively new Downtown attractions, the Center for American Values on the Riverwalk and the Fire Fighter Historic Center at 2 nd and Main. Everyone who works in any retail or restaurant business in the area should be able to get people to and from these places clearly and concisely. Of course all who are in business or employed in this area should be able to tell visitors how to get to the Fairgrounds. Let s all do our best to encourage all of these visitors to come back to Downtown Pueblo because they had such a great experience here. Member Mentions The Sangre de Cristo Arts & Conference Center has received the award for Pueblo s Best Place for a Large Conference as determined by the readers of the Colorado Springs Business Journal. The publication noted that there are seven spaces for meetings, from small groups to the full Jackson Conference Center with 6,800 square feet of space and a seating capacity of 500. In addition to meeting spaces, the Arts Center boasts seven galleries, a 500 seat theater and the award-winning Buell Children s Museum. 3 Crane Watch The building which will expand the Convention Center is going up rapidly; the exterior has made a lot of progress in the past couple of months. 5 Downtown Happenings Rosemount Museum 14th & Grand, rosemount.org. This 125 year old Victorian mansion was built by prominent Pueblo businessman John A. Thatcher for his family. The 37-room, 24,000 sq. ft. home was completed in 1893 and at that time was located on Pueblo s northern edge. Thatcher s youngest son Raymond was the last family member to live in the home. When he passed away in 1968 the home became a museum. More than 85% of the furnishings and artifacts displayed are original to the John Thatcher family. The museum is open Tues.-Sat. At selected conventions, the Association will present $10 Downtown Dollar certificates to most conventions which come to the Convention Center. The Dollars feature the names of all of our retail and restaurant members, giving the recipients a wider choice for shopping and spending in the area. 6 A Walk Through Time Information & photos gathered by Margaret Ward-Masias 115 W. 2nd Street Frazier Saddle Co., Southern Colorado Power and Colorado Bluesky Enterprises In the late 1800 s and early 1900 s anyone wanting tack for horses knew that some of the best came from Pueblo, Colorado. One of the most well known manufacturers was R.T. Frazier who was born in Ohio in 1850 but by 1881 was in Leadville working for Peter Becker a saddle maker. By 1884 he had moved to Pueblo to work at the S. C. Gallup Saddle Company. He worked with Gallup until 1898 when he established his own business. By 1905 Frazier was located at W. 2nd Street. He worked from that location until about The March 12, 1911 Pueblo Chieftain ran a story headlined FRAZIER S NEW SADDLE AND HARNESS FACTORY IS CREDIT TO PUEBLO. The story begins R. T. Frazier the harness and saddle man is now located in his new quarters on Second street, across the street from his old stand and has probably the finest factory and store west of the Mississippi. He occupies a three-story and basement building fifty-foot front by 130 deep. It is a modern brick block perfectly adequate to his enormous business. The story describes the use of the building as the basement being used for staining leather. The street level floor was the sales room with glass cases filled with fine finished leather goods. In one corner is a Navajo cozy corner replete with blankets of beautiful color and design. Along the walls and through the center aisles are displayed a magnificent stock of harness and saddles. The third [second] floor was devoted to the manufacture of harness. The famous Frazier saddles are made on the fourth [third] floor where 50 skilled men are employed turning out saddles that have made their maker famous, not only in the United States, but in Europe and the Orient as well. Cowboys, cavalrymen and army officers know the merits of the Frazier saddle. Recognizing the value of good working conditions, the factory provided adequate light and ventilation with room for making large objects. The story stated that sales for 1910 reached $130,000 with items shipped to every quarter of the globe. A 1912 story said that the building would be enlarged by two more stories, but this photo indicates only one story was added. World War I brought additional sales to the business. A June 17, 1917 story noted that Frazier had bid to supply tens of thousands of nose feed bags, cavalry bridles and halters. It also noted that the army was already using many of Frazier s saddles. Business did not stop during the Great Depression; on May 17, 1931 the Chieftain reported, R. T. Frazier, Pueblo s well-known saddler and leather merchant, received a big order from the Argentine Republic in South America for a number of his famous Pueblo saddles and the order is now being made up in his shop and the saddles will be shipped to their destination in just a couple of weeks. Robert Frazier died in July1931; his wife continued to run the business until 1958 though she sold the building in late The January 2, 1950 Star-Journal announced that the building had been sold to M.B. Littell and Samuel T. Jones. The story said, Littell and Jones purchased the building from Mrs. R. T. Frazier for an undisclosed sum. Coincidently W. N. Clark, president of the (Southern Colorado) power company, announced that negotiations for the long term lease are complete except for signing. Littell, real estate manager for Sam Jones Agency, said he and Jones will modernize the Frazier building thruout (sic), including an entirely new facing outside and redecorating inside. Litttell indicated that the Frazier saddler would continue operating from the building for at least several months, moving out in time that the extensive renovating can be completed before the power company is to move in. Lease on the present office space in the Colorado building expires Dec. 31. The power company remained at the 2nd street location until about 1990 when Pueblo County purchased the building for the Pueblo County Board for Developmental Disabilities. Member Dues Must Be Current to Participate on Discount Card We will produce a new discount card in early September which will be good through September 30, Those of you who are currently on the card should take a look at the list below, and make sure that your discount is still in line with your business needs today. If you are a retail or restaurant member who is not participating at this time, please think about whether the program could work for you. Do remember that we distribute about 1,000 of these cards per year. That is 1,000 or more people who see your business name and consider whether your offerings fit their lives. We have several members who see a lot of additional business from the cards and whose customers come back because of the discounts. You don t have to do deep discounts; most of the discounts listed are for 10%, a lot of you already do that for seniors anyway. You must be a member to participate in the program. You do not have to pay any more than your dues to do so. Your dues for must be paid in full no later than August 17 in order for you to participate in the new card. If you are not a member of the Association, you should make a quick decision about the increased potential business if you become a member and receive the additional publicity involved with the card your name and discount appear in each newsletter and on our website. When we use print advertising featuring products a few times a year, the discount card is in almost all ads with a complete listing of participating businesses and their discounts. When you add these benefits to the other benefits of being an Association member, the $275 for a year s dues is a bargain and an investment in your future. In addition, as a member you are entitled to purchase discount cards from us for ½ the retail value ($5) and re-sell them at face value ($10) giving you additional income.
