CANVAS BAG THEATRE Our annual performance evenings involving all classes from the drama school will be held next term in The Theatre at Rangi Ruru. Classes and tutors are now deciding themes and scripts, casting and workshopping. Dates are at the end of this newsletter. The excitement begins! Here s what you can expect to see on stage!

2 Monday Thumbelina The children have been very creative this term learning how to use props effectively when developing a story. They particularly enjoyed using the big box of crazy shoes in the story of The Elves and The Shoemaker. Much fun was had in re-creating the part where the elves sneak in and make the fancy shoes secretly. We have also used props and musical instruments in developing exciting stories about pirates, forest animals and a very cheeky cat. Our play for term three is about this cat who was asked to rule the world by some very unwise gods. They soon learn that it might be a Cat-tas-trophy to have a cat ruling the world. This is a fun story which is from a very light hearted legend. Much fun was had by all in work-shopping this interesting tale and children are currently choosing their parts. Last class for the term: 2 July Monday Star Fleet This class has been developing their ability to focus and freeze while acting a character on stage. This will be very useful when they perform in the term 3 play, as there are scenes where the technique of stage freeze is used as well as the ability to move in slow motion to create another type of stage effect. The children have imaginatively developed their own ideas in the stories this term about magical places and far away lands found in fables and legends. They have also been developing their own small group presentations in order to strengthen their team work. Our play for performance week is about a magical tree that has great powers to save a whole kingdom. The heroin is brave and wise and is tasked with a great responsibility by Magdalene the wise old woman. The class have work-shopped this story already and have been trying out various parts. 3 Tuesday Quangle Wangle A play is being concocted! There are "goodies" and "baddies", slapstick encounters, different dimensions, family allegiances (or perhaps one that is not so loyal). It remains to be found in the writing and memorising and acting out of the story as to whose magic is going to be the strongest... watch this space Last class for the term: 3 July Wednesday Quangle Wangle Yet another play is being devised and moulded around diverse characters chosen by the actors themselves. Is it to be the final throes and end of a dynasty ruled by a powerful and self-centred Queen? Only the Keeper of the Sword can reveal to us the outcome; and whether it fit the predictions made by the one everyone considers to be quite mad, the Professor. Last class for the term: 4 July

4 Thursday Thumbelina What do you do when your dad brags to the king that you can spin straw into gold? You use your wits and encounter a dose of luck to solve it all. Our play for the Term 3 performance will be Rumplestiltskin, a traditional story rescripted to highlight the comic elements.the class will use ensemble and individual skills to tell the story. After extensive workshopping, children will chose the part they want, giving me a first, second and third choice from which to make the final casting. There are some great actors in this class particularly troll-girls! Last class for the term: 5 July Thursday Star Fleet We explored stories from the 1001 Arabian Nights in Term One, and the class loved them. We delved into the intricacies of script-writing with the storywithin-a-story-within-a-story format. Simple and complex at the same time. The class unanimously voted to prepare these for the annual performance next term so I have scripted five of these, all with a modern twist and ensuring a more contemporary approach to gender equity within the stories. Humour is an integral part along and there will be an emphasis on choreography, using Annabel s dance skills to interpret the storylines. Last class for the term: 5 July

5 Canvas Bag Theatre Production Week: September Performances are 21 and 22 September, and each class performs their show twice, on ONE of these evenings as scheduled below. There are two shows, approx. an hour long each, the first at 5 pm and the second at 7:30 pm. The length of each play within the hour is around 20 minutes. A $15 surcharge is added to all Term 3 accounts. This covers expenses in connection with additional premises hire, lighting technicians, props, makeup, and health and safety compliance. ONLINE TICKET SALES Ticketing will be done online through Patron Base. NO DOOR SALES! We will be using the portal available through The Theatre at Rangi- Ruru school, which will be available from the beginning of September. A link will be ed to all parents. Please ensure your contact details are up to date. All information about this will be available nearer the time!
