2 Welcome to Juice! Juice Newcastle s award-winning festival for children and young people is back for the third year. Packed full of events that celebrate the creativity of young people, the festival is presented in the world-class venues, facilities and open air locations that make Newcastle such a brilliant place to live, grow up in and visit. The festival, with its many partners, is proud to commission and present new work by children and young people opening with Photomapping Our World (p4) and closing with The Journey Home (p25). Don t miss our three Young Ranters events (p15) plus a fantastic mix of other performances and exhibitions all created by young people. Juice is all about taking part and across the festival there are inspirational opportunities to try new experiences and develop new skills. Join bboys from around the world in an action packed Just Jam Weekend (p16); be part of a unique music event in Whaletone Opera (p8) and don t miss the Tate Movie Project (p12), where you can add your ideas to a new animated film. For families there are events across Newcastle during October half term and we re delighted to welcome back Urban Playground & Gravity Style (a massive hit last year) with their new outdoor show The Next Level combining free running with street dance (p28). And of course, the final weekend makes the most of Halloween, with a pumpkin carving extravaganza (p31) followed by a special Festival Finale Parade (p31) get dressed up, join in, and keep your eyes peeled was that Beastie? 3 Running through the underpass, playing in the park, eating tea, watching TV... FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY Photomapping Our World Every day throughout the festival Mon Sat, 10am 5pm; Sun, 2pm 5pm An exhibition of photographs by children from Running through the underpass, playing in the park, eating tea, watching TV. In this exhibition, commissioned specially for Juice Festival, children aged 10 and 11 from St Aidan s C of E Primary School in have documented their own lives, photographing themselves, their families and friends. Photomapping Our World was inspired by Kingsmead Eyes, a project also led by Gideon and Crispin involving children in Hackney, London. Photomapping Our World is on display at Discovery Museum until 2 Jan The photographs were all taken during one week in June, coinciding with the start of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Working with two internationally known photographers: Gideon Mendel and Crispin Hughes, the children took digital cameras home and decided what to photograph

4 A group of teenagers do something bad, really bad... Write All About It Thurs 21 Oct, 6pm 13+ A live performance of three brand new radio plays written by young people, with audience participation built in. Three groups of young people aged yrs from Lawrence Jackson School, Heworth Hall Crew and SPARC Scriptwriting Group have written short radio plays as part of the Theatre Royal Newcastle s Seconds Out initiative. The plays will be performed by young people involved in theatre workshops at Theatre Royal Newcastle. But when they find that the cover-up unites them and brings harmony to their otherwise fractious lives where s the incentive to put things right? DNA is a poignant and sometimes hilarious tale with a dark heart that has been described as Grange Hill for the Skins generation. Meet the cast after each show and join their discussion about the themes and issues contained in the play and the challenges of putting on this production. Young Northerners Thurs 21 Oct, 7pm What does northernness mean to you? What s the most northerly place you ve been? Do you describe yourself as northern? Young people from Dame Allan s School, Sacred Heart High and The Dorothy Key create and perform short pieces in this lively exploration of all things northern see how they tackle this huge subject in just 20 minutes each! Whaletone Opera 8+ Be part of a UK premier and make your half term memorable by getting involved in this imaginatively created piece of community music theatre. Covering a wide range of musical styles, Whaletone is funny, dynamic and adventurous. The story involves banana cake, plum blossom remedies, a storm, a wedding, a Jamaican cow and a hippopotamus! The piece is in four acts, performed over four days and there are opportunities for families with children aged 8yrs or over to take part in Acts 2 and 4. For a fantastic three-day experience join Act 2, or for one action-packed day join Act 4. Or really get the bug and join both Acts! No experience necessary, but if you play a musical instrument feel free to bring it along. Children must be accompanied by an adult who will join in too! Chasing Shadows Wed 27 Fri 29 Oct, 8am 7pm Sat 30 Oct, 9am 6pm Helix Arts create opportunities for people to explore and unlock their potential by working with artists. Since 2002, with many partners, Helix Arts has involved young people aged 13yrs+ from across the North East. Chasing Shadows represents some key artworks from the last four years, and the exhibition features paintings, prints, photographs, films and animation. During the weekend of Oct from 2pm 4pm visitors can meet the team, enjoy a free family workshop and find out more about BALTIC s young people s programme. The perfect start to half term and Halloween. Walking with Witches will be on sale at a special price, with author Lynn Huggins- Cooper available for book signing. 7 An animated film made by and for children... Case of Belonging Sat 23 Oct, 11am 1pm What would you put in a suitcase to describe who you are and the world you live in? What special objects would you pick to remind you of home? With artist Alison Ashton and members of Jackass Youth Theatre, let your imagination fly as you make your very own case of belonging, dipping into a treasure trove of tactile materials. FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY Where: Northern Stage Tickets: Free, places limited and allocated on a first come basis. Children must be accompanied. Info: Haymarket Jackass members have been presenting their cases of belonging at international festivals and events in Brazil, Germany and the UK. The Tate Movie Truck Sat 23 Mon 25 Oct, 12noon, 1.15pm, 2.45pm & 4pm (sessions last 45 minutes) The Tate Movie Project is the first of its kind an animated film made by and for children across the UK. Uniquely ambitious, the project uses great artworks to inspire 5 13 year olds nationwide to contribute their ideas to an animated movie. Don t miss the opportunity to contribute towards The Tate Movie with the arrival of the Tate Movie Truck in Newcastle. Watch out for the finished film which will be screened on the BBC and in cinemas in Where: Times Square, Tickets: Free, (parents must stay with their children during the sessions) Booking: Pre-booking available via Northern Stage Central Station Part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, the Tate Movie Project is supported by the Legacy Trust UK, BP and CBBC. Bring along your ideas, an object or photograph that is special to you and, if possible, an old suitcase. After the workshop there will also be the opportunity for your case of belonging to form part of the set for a production by Jackass Youth Theatre (more details will be provided on the day). Spooky Cooking Sat 23 Oct, 2pm 5pm Alan McKenna, owner of McKenna s at Northern Stage, will teach young people a few food basics with some fun touch and taste tests. You can then design your own spooky themed menu and learn how to make a witches brew just in time for Halloween. At each event, expect 50 minutes of high energy as the ranters tell the audience what they really think and feel, and what they want to share with the world. Sun 24 Oct, 4pm A 30 minute re-make of the story of the three little pigs for a teenage audience, created by members of Cultural Warriors from The Sage, all aged 18 25yrs. The performance twists around the traditional story allowing the audience more of an insight into the wolf s background. 9 An explosive weekend jam-packed with Hip Hop... Just Jam Weekend 7+ Sat 23 Sun 24 Oct Bad Taste Cru, Dance City and Juice Festival present an explosive weekend jampacked with Hip Hop activities, including Breakdancing workshops, a performance showcase and an all-day international battle event! Where: Dance City Box office: Central Station JAM and JUICE Showcase Sat 23 Oct, 7.30pm Come and see bboys, bgirls and groups from across the region strut their stuff and showcase their talents in this exhilarating celebration of Hip Hop culture. Monuir from Vagabonds, France will return to defend his title and DJ Timber will be making an appearance on the wheels of steel, all the way from Barcelona. Three of the UK s most respected old school bboys including Tuff Tim Twist will judge the event bringing their unique flava. This event promises thrills, skills, explosive dancing and fun for all. 12 The Incredible Book Eating Boy Oliver Jeffers, Illustrator in Residence Mon 25 Tues 26 Oct, 10am 3pm Wed 27, 10am 1pm Henry loves books but not like you or I. He loves to EAT books! Over three days, Oliver Jeffers will be creating a special installation in the magical attic space at Seven Stories, inspired by his award-winning book: The Incredible Book Eating Boy. Drop in and work with Oliver to add your mark to the hundreds of books that will be stacked and suspended in the attic space. Jonathan Likes This Tues 26 Oct, 8pm When 16 year old Jonathan Fudge dies, his friends flock to his Facebook page to make sense of the horrible mess. But when Jonathan starts to respond, they begin to wonder whether their friend has disappeared at all. Join Paul James, Associate Director of Education & Participation and writer Lee Mattinson for a reading of Jonathan Likes This. How do we know we ve truly arrived home? The Journey Home is a poignant, humorous and sometimes surreal musical story of migration, inspired by Shaun Tan s picture book, The Arrival. Mongrel UK is an international ensemble of young people based at The Sage, delivered in partnership with the North of England Refugee Service. The Night Pirates Presented by Theatre Hullabaloo 3-7 & FAMILIES Fri 29 Oct, 2pm, signed performance Sat 30 Oct, 11am & a signed performance 2pm When dark shadows come stealing down Tom s bedroom walls he thinks it might be monsters or ogres or trolls. But Tom s not afraid, for he s a brave little boy. So he peeps out of the window and what should he see but PIRATES. Stranger still they re GIRL PIRATES, stealing the front of his house! A fantastical moonlit adventure with puppets, song and ballet-dancing pirates. This delightful adaptation of the much loved picture book has been specially created for young children and their families. The Next Level Sat 30 Oct, 3pm (in case of rain, 6pm at The Sage see description) Following their hugely popular performance at last year s festival we are delighted to welcome back the Urban Playground Team & Gravity Style with their brand new show. In The Next Level the award-winning Urban Playground Team combine their contemporary and urban dance styles with the astonishing skills of Parkour s cocreators Gravity Style. Welcome to the art of movement, welcome to The Next Level! In partnership with Newcastle City Council s Arts Development Team, young people have been working with Urban Playground to create microchoreographies as curtain raisers to this fantastic performance. 16 Who s that hiding around the corner? Beastie Fri 29 Oct, 11am & 2pm Sat 30 Oct, 9.30am, 12noon & 2.30pm Sun 31 Oct, 11am Who s that hiding around the corner? What s that moving in the trees? Did you just see what I saw? Take a magical adventure with Beastie this autumn. Inspired by the imagination of young people, Beastie is a participatory performance for children aged 6 10 years. Each Beastie outing will last 90 minutes, starting from secret locations in central Newcastle. So keep your eyes peeled.
