The REA was started in 1996, and helps perpetuate the legacy of NCR Corporation and its people. Membership in NCR REA is a great way to stay connected to NCR and its people. T o repeat after Chuck, I just want to say I hope everyone is enjoying their summer and getting some relief from this unbelievably hot weather. Seems like we re all looking for ways to keep cool as we crank up our air conditioners and fans full force. I personally cannot wait for a cool, crisp fall season. As we move full throttle into Q3, I wanted to thank those of you who tried using the NCR REA facebook page I launched last issue. Obviously there are some glitches with the site, so I m working on fixing the problems. Ahhh.. the days of software development have surely changed. We ve come a long way from punch cards, paper tape, and computers on raised floors, haven t we! More on facebook next issue. Get Ready for the Annual Meeting and Open House This issue, as with all our issues, is dedicated to getting our members together. So that s why we re focusing on the upcoming Annual Meeting and Open House, which is scheduled for Thursday, September 20, The planning committee has done an outstanding job of making the arrangements. Now it s up to our members to join us to make it all happen. Let s make a memory! Please read through the information on pages 14 and 15. If you would like to attend, just fill out page 15, detach, and mail it in! But be sure to do so as soon as possible--preferably by September 1! We are looking forward to seeing you all again! The Electronic Age to the Rescue As you ll read in Ken Carr s article on page 6, we are discontinuing the printed version of the Membership Directory. I know that many of us, myself included, still love the touch and feel of paper articles, magazines, and so on. But like gasoline, the cost of print has simply skyrocketed. And small organizations, like the NCR REA, on a budget just can t continue paying those costs without consequences, such as raising dues and cutting back on other goodies. Fear not. If you still want a printed Membership Directory, you can request one for a nominal fee. Keep in mind, however, that with our soon-to-bereleased and newly designed web site, the directory will be updated weekly and available 24/7. No longer will you have to wait two years for a new version! Just point, click, and download! Cheers! STEVE Steve Wicinski, Editor

3 N C R R eti r e e N e w s P a g e 3 D ID YOU KNOW SUBMITTED B Y K EN C A R R, REA S E C R E T A R Y NCR Stories Abound T his Quarter, I thought I would kick it up a notch and relate some Patterson Myths and employee stories I have heard or witnessed over the years. Perhaps you ve heard some of these stories and have others to share for future issues. # 1: Mr. Patterson had waited a couple of days for the Accounting Department to deliver an end-of-month financial report. The reason given, they were running behind. Apparently, this was an ongoing problem. The story goes, with his patience at an end, Mr. Patterson marched over to the accounting department, had the accounting records gathered up, and took them to the power plant where they burned. With that done, he told the accounting manager that the records were now current and he expected them to stay that way. # 2: Mr. Patterson had taken a newly hired manager to the Executive Dining Room for lunch. Introducing the young man to the others in the room, Mr. Patterson asked him to say a few words to the group. Apparently, the young man told Mr. Patterson that he was sure the others would prefer to eat their lunch than to hear him speak. Mr. Patterson said, By all means let s eat our lunch. The story goes, no one at NCR ever saw the young man again. # 3: One of Mr. Patterson s pet peeves dealt with waiters who cleared one dish at a time as each diner finished a course of the meal. He wanted all dishes gathered at one time only when all diners had completed that course. Supposedly, Mr. Patterson was hosting a lunch at a New York hotel. Apparently the hotel had been made aware of Mr. Patterson s wishes. When the first diner completed his salad, out popped a waiter to retrieve the wooden bowl and Mr. Patterson was ready to act. The story goes that Mr. Patterson reached under his chair, pulled out a hammer and nail, and proceeded to nail his salad bowl to the table. # 4: Mr. Patterson would take unannounced tours of the factory. During these visits, he would stop and talk with employees. He would ask them several questions about the company, their bosses, their pay, the working conditions, if they were satisfied with the job, what they would do to improve the way their jobs were done, etc.. The story goes, if an employee was too happy with his/ her job and everything about it, Mr. Patterson believed he/she wasn t helping the Company grow and improve. Many times he would fire the employee on the spot. Seldom was anyone actually let go, but Mr. Patterson certainly got his point across to those who overheard the conversation. # 5: Most of you know the story about how James and John Ritty invented the cash register. And after John Patterson purchased and used a couple Ritty registers for his business, he saw the future of the cash register and bought the business from the Rittys. At that time, the Rittys were using one of their very first registers in their tavern in Dayton. Well, that register is still in Dayton at Jay s Seafood Restaurant. Recently, Jay s manager told me the restaurant has owned and used the register for decades. # 6: One of the best and by the book Dayton factory managers was on his way to an assembly department when he saw a man standing by a coke machine. On the factory manager s return, the same man was still standing by the coke machine. He confronted the man, asking him if he thought his break was a little long. The man said no. The manager told him to get back to work. The worker said he would as soon as he finished his coke. At the point, the manger was fuming, and asked the worker for his name. The worker gave it to him. The manager asked him where he worked. The man said, With the phone company, AT&T. # 7: Having purchased new Retail Terminals from NCR, the customer decided to place the new units in his large stores and move the older units from there to smaller stores. One store manager called Dayton wanting to buy crates to ship his terminals to a smaller store. He was told that NCR had contracted with an electronic equipment hauler and that the crates were not necessary. He was told NCR would even schedule the move for him. The manager was insistent, so he was given the name of the crate manufacturer. About a month later, the store manager called Dayton. He had ordered the crates at $40 each, and received them broken down flat and banded in groups. The crates had arrived after 5:00 PM and the store manager told the delivery driver to just leave them on the loading dock. When the day crew arrived the next morning, the crates were gone. Waste Management had mistaken the flattened bundles for trash, crushed them, and hauled them away to the dump. If you have any other Patterson stories, NCR stories, or personal stories, please let us know and we ll share them in a future newsletter. Just send your entries to our editor at: steve@writedataservices.com

5 N C R R eti r e e N e w s P a g e 5 NCR IN T H E NEWS..... NCR Silver Brings Big Business Know-How to Small Business M ore than 125 years ago, NCR got its start and ascended to leadership with a passion for delivering solutions that would help small business owners run their business and achieve their goals. Those small businesses grew into larger companies, such as JC Penney and Meijer, and NCR grew, too. Over the past several decades, NCR has shifted its focus, developing multichannel, self-service solutions for large customers. This focus has paid off. Currently, NCR is #1 globally in self-checkout, selfservice kiosks, and hardware maintenance and support services and that s just looking at Retail. With the launch of NCR Silver, NCR is returning to its roots. NCR is restoring its focus on the small to medium business (SMB) market, with a commitment to delivering the innovative solutions that will help today s small businesses thrive. NCR Silver exists to help small and medium business owners achieve their goals. NCR is changing the game with a simple, yet powerful, solution. NCR Silver is an easy-to-use and affordable cloud-based point-of-sale (POS) solution that enables small business owners to take payments, market to customers, and manage their entire business. It operates on Apple devices including the ipad, iphone, and ipod Touch and is available as an application on itunes. There are approximately 8 million small businesses across the globe 4 million of which are in the U.S. alone. These 4 million small businesses comprise 60 percent of the economy. Delivering solutions for the SMB market is the next step in NCR's business strategy - at the RIGHT time for the company. While the initial launch of NCR Silver is in the U.S., NCR will be expanding internationally in To learn more about NCR Silver, point your browser to these sites. Watch NCR Silver on YouTube. 6 N C R R eti r e e N e w s P a g e 6 P R I N T E D V E R S I O N OF MEMBERSHI P D I R E C T O R Y T O BE DISCONTINUED... A s you know, the NCR REA has been publishing and distributing a membership directory every two years. The cost for the 2012 edition mailed earlier this year increased to over $4000! As the cost of printing and postage continues to rise, so does the cost to publish hard copies of our directory. When you consider how our membership is constantly changing, a printed directory is out of date almost as soon as it goes to press. So any corrected mistakes, membership updates, changes in address, phone numbers, and addresses will not be published for as long as two years. Currently, we are developing a new and improved NCR REA Website. Under the Members Only section there will be a link to the printable Membership Directory. Because the online directory will be updated weekly, it will ALWAYS be more current than the printed format. With all this in mind, the Board of Trustees has unanimously voted to discontinue printing and distributing the Membership Directory in hard copy. We realize that some of our members do not own a personal computer, and that they may not even have access to one through family or friends. If that is the case and you still want a printed copy of the Membership Directory, you can order one by sending your request along with $5.00 to: NCR REA, Inc., P.O. Box 218, Germantown, OH Upon receiving your request and payment, we will mail you a printed copy. By eliminating the expense of the printed directory, the NCR REA will save at least $2000 a year. This will help defray the rising cost of publishing the newsletter four times a year, as well as costs associated with the annual meetings, the reunions, and the liability insurance required for those events. Best of all, we will be able to postpone any increase in annual dues a little farther down the road! Article submitted by Ken Carr, REA Secretary

7 N C R R eti r e e N e w s P a g e 7 F ROM OUR MEMBERS... ( C O N T I N U E D ) A list worth keeping... Courtesy of REA Member, Eddy Furey R ecently, as I was waiting in line behind an older gentleman at Wendy s I heard him ask for his senior discount. The girl at the register apologized and charged him less. When I asked the man what the discount was, he told me that seniors over 55 get 10% off everything on the menu, every day. Being that age myself, I figured I might as well ask for the discount, too. As I waited my turn in line, I thought about the consequences of doing so. If the register girl asked me for I.D., it could be embarrassing having to show my license. But if she didn't ask for proof of age, I would get so depressed that I really did look that "old" and didn't need to prove it. But since I always like to save money, I boldly asked for the discount. Sadly, the young lady just rang up the discount, although I m convinced I don't look a day over 54. Anyway, this incident prompted me to do some research. As a result, I came across a list of restaurants, supermarkets, department stores, travel deals, and other types of offers giving various discounts with different age requirements. I was actually surprised to see how many there are and how some of them start at the young age of 50! Hmmmm, Dunkin Donuts gives free coffee to people over 55. If you're paying for a cup every day, you might want to start getting it for free.
