2 Irish Traditional Music Session: Every Monday: 8-11pm Tenor banjo, harmonica and fiddle player Don Meade and friends get together every Monday night for an Irish traditional music session in the back room of this historic Hell s Kitchen bar/restaurant. Free admission; food and drink are available. Musicians and singers and listeners welcome. At the Landmark Tavern, th Avenue (on 46th St), Manhattan; co-sponsored with and led by Don Meade; for info or Folk Open Sing: Wednesdays, Jan. 7 th & Feb 4 th ; 7-10pm Join us on the first Wednesday of each month for an open sing. Bring your voice, instruments, friends, neighbors, and children. Drop by for a couple of songs or the whole evening. At the Ethical Culture Society, 53 Prospect Park West, Brooklyn (near 2nd St.). Sandwiches, salads, coffee, tea, wine, and beer are available. Free admission. A voluntary contribution is requested on guest nights. The nearest subway stop is 52nd Street on the #7 Flushing Local. Alan Friend will lead an old-time jam from 7:30 to 9:30pm at the Brooklyn Farmacy & Soda Fountain every other Tuesday as indicated. Bring your fiddle, banjo, guitar, etc. and we ll play old-time music at this small, warm, friendly venue. Acoustic instruments only-- no electric ones. Info: alanfriend_music (at) mindspring.com. Zlatne Uste Golden Festival: January 16 th -17 th Two nights of Balkan music, dance & border-crossing celebration. The Golden Festival is New York s largest Balkan music event, with multiple stages, Balkan & Middle Eastern refreshments, Balkan arts vendors, as well as beautiful Balkan textiles on display. From international stars to local musicians, modern Balkan stylists to folk traditionalists, over 40 bands provide hours of ecstatic listening, dancing and partying. 3 FMSNY Events Details- Continued Shanty Sing: Sunday, January 18 st ; 2-5pm We are co-sponsoring the Shanty Sing on the 3 rd Sunday of every month. The William Main Doerflinger Memorial Sea Shanty Sessions at the Noble Maritime Collection (to give the official title) are from 2 to 5 pm at the Noble Gallery, Building D, Snug Harbor Cultural Center, 1000 Richmond Terrace, Staten Island, NY. Refreshments are available, including beer and wine for sale. Snug Harbor is accessible by the S40 bus from the Staten Island Ferry Terminal and by car. Expect an evening of great chorus songs, shanties, and reminiscences. The entire performers' share of the proceeds will go to Kate Kleiman, David's widow. Winter Weekend of Music; Feb at Hudson Valley Resort & Spa, Kerhonkson, NY In the Bleak Midwinter when the gloom and cold are getting you down, come join us at our Winter Weekend. Totally unstructured (except for mealtimes), we get together to sing, play relax, and have fun. February 13-15, yes, it's Valentine's Day Weekend - bring your sweetie! The Hudson Valley Resort and Spa in Kerhonkson NY is about 2-1/2 hours from NYC (barring traffic). Accommodations are comfortable, food is good and plentiful (and the kitchen is very good about special dietary requirements), there is a heated indoor pool, and a spa with hot tubs (gender-segregated - sorry!). Mood and weather permitting, there is some spectacular hiking in the area. Some scholarships are available, and we try to arrange shared rides. See flyer page

9 Eileen Pentel Winter is finally here. We hope your holidays have been good ones, lots of music, lots of food too much food probably, but never too much music. January will bring us much more. The Mystic Chantey Blast and Pub Sing will take place in Mystic, Conn. Here in NYC, the Sunnyside Singers Club continues as do the Irish Traditional Music Sessions, The Folk Open Sing, the Shanty Sing, and the Old-Time Music Jams. We are co-sponsoring the 30th Annual Zlatne Uste Golden Festival, and the Peoples Voice Café open Mic Night. At the Peoples Voice Café, we will also celebrate David Kleiman s life at his Memorial. At the Community Church there will also be a remembrance for Ray Karona who passed away this October. We were fortunate to know and share good times with both David and Ray. Our Winter Weekend is coming up in February. Time to send in those reservations! TradMaD Camp (Trad Music and Dance Camp) In celebration of the club's 50th Anniversary, we're going back to Pinewoods Camp, where it all started.
