2 Irish Traditional Music Session: every Monday, 8-11pm Tenor banjo, harmonica and fiddle player Don Meade and friends get together every Monday night for an Irish traditional music session in the back room of this historic Hell s Kitchen bar/restaurant. Free admission food and drink are available. Musicians, singers, and listeners welcome. At the Landmark Tavern, th Avenue (on 46th St), Manhattan co sponsored with and led by Don Meade for info or Featured Performers: to be announced Sunnyside Singers Club: every Wednesday, 8-11pm Come join us every Wednesday at 8pm for a 3 hour pub style sing around. All songs are welcome, as are acoustic instruments. Co sponsored with, and held at the Aubergine Cafe, Skillman Avenue at the corner of 50th Street in Woodside, Queens. Occasionally there is a featured guest performer for part of the evening. Yummy desserts, sandwiches, salads, coffee, tea, wine, and beer are available. Info: Andy s Ramble Bluegrass Quartet: Sunday, January 7th; 4pm Andy Statman is universally recognized as one of the world s foremost mandolin virtuosos. He began initially as a bluegrass performer and played in the iconic group, Breakfast Special, in his early years. A short time later his musical journey took him to the world of Klezmer music and he developed similar virtuosic facility on the clarinet. He has toured extensively all over the world in the past 35 years with his trio, playing Klezmer and Bluegrass music. He has recorded over a dozen albums. (His website is In Andy s Ramble, Andy is teaming up with his friend since childhood: Gene Yellin, guitar, a 40 year veteran of the New York bluegrass scene. Gene has played with Hazel Dickens, Breakfast Special (Kenny Kosek, Andy Statman, etc), Yellin Grass (with his bluegrass banjo playing brother, Bob), Eastbound Freight and American Flyer (with Ben Freed). He has recorded with Hazel Dickens and Gene Lowinger. He is critically recognized as one of the best bluegrass singers to come out of the New York area. Andy and Gene are joined by Ellery Marshall on banjo and Tim Kiah on bass and vocals. Ellery is from Los Angeles and Tim is from Newton, Mass. Both have continued on next page 2

The Golden Festival is New York s largest Balkan music event, with multiple stages, Balkan & Middle Eastern refreshments, Balkan arts vendors, as well as beautiful Balkan textiles on display. From international stars to local musicians, modern Balkan stylists to folk traditionalists, over 60 bands provide hours of ecstatic listening, dancing and partying. Piedmont Bluz; Sunday, February 4th, 4 pm The Piedmont Bluz acoustic duo is dedicated to the preservation of Country Blues and the Piedmont style and their mission is to help keep this rural, east coast tradition alive by educating audiences about this unique aspect of African American culture through musical entertainment. The husband and wife duo are much loved wherever they go and feel that "there are stories to tell, people to remember, and things that must be said" so, in addition to tickling your ears with delightful music, they weave a bit of history into the presentation of each song. Facebook: / Winter Weekend of Music; Feb. 9-11, Ellenville, NY In the Bleak Midwinter... when the gloom and cold are getting you down, come join us at our Winter Weekend. Unstructured (except for meal times), we get together to sing, play, relax, and have fun. The Honor's Haven Resort and Spa in Ellenville, NY, is about 2 hours from NYC (barring traffic). Accommodations are comfortable, food is good and plentiful, there is a heated indoor pool, a spa, and hot tub. Mood and weather permitting, there is a walk to a scenic waterfall right on the grounds. 6 Weekend Discounts Available There are two weekend discounts available: A $100 discount for anyone who has not attended any of the last 3 weekends and a special "friends" rate ($150 triple, or $190 double, per person) for any group of 3 or more age Information on this rate is on the online registration at Weekend Scholarships Available Applications are now being accepted for scholarships to the Winter Weekend (February 9 11). These provide either full or partial scholarships to individuals who could not otherwise attend and who have a strong interest in folk music, singing, and/or instrumental playing. TO APPLY: Please download an application from the website org or request an application form from the address below. The most important considerations are financial need and interest in folk music. The candidates will be considered and notified by mail. The fund was established in memoriam by George s parents, the New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club, and other contributors. George was a young man and a friend of folk music who greatly enjoyed our weekends. Charles & Ilse Mayer Scholarship Fund provides scholarships for each weekend each year. This fund was set up in memoriam by board member Evy Mayer in honor of Evy s father Charles Mayer and her mother, Ilse Mayer. You may make a fully tax deductible contribution in any amount to any of the funds above by sending a check payable to Folk Music Society of New York (noted with the name of the scholarship memorial) to our treasurer, Heather Wood, 444 W. 54th St, #7, NYC, NY To establish a new named fund in honor of or in memoriam of a loved one, please contact any of our current board members (see list Happy New Year to everyone. We hope this will be a good year full of music and hope. We certainly need it. January will be a busy month along with our ongoing events the Folk Open Sing, the Sunnyside Singers Club, the Upper West Side Song Swap, and the Shanty Sing we are involved in a number of other exciting happenings. Check out the Good Coffeehouse with Andy s Ramble Bluegrass Quartet and the Zlatne Uste Golden Festival. There is also the In Concert for Puerto Rico, to help out our citizens recovering from a dual hurricane hit. If you re passing by Mystic Seaport in Connecticut, you might want to check out the Chantey Blast/Pub Sing. (So is it Shanty or Chanty or at any rate the music will be energetic!) More recently, he helped his New York Handball Team team win first place gold cup in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
