2 Irish Traditional Music Session: every Monday, 8-11pm Tenor banjo, harmonica and fiddle player Don Meade and friends get together every Monday night for an Irish traditional music session in the back room of this historic bar/ restaurant. Mystic Chantey Blast & Pub Sing: Saturday, January 5 th ; 1-5pm Blast away the winter blahs with Mystic Seaport chantey staff and many of the finest chantey singers in the Northeast. Chanties, maritime songs and ballads come join in, lead a song if you wish. Admission is free, but donations are welcome to help support the Mystic Sea Music Festival, in June. FMSNY is a co sponsor of this event and supporter of the festival. Bob Conroy, Sunday, January 6 th, 4-6 pm The son of a New York Irish labor union organizer with roots in Co. Roscommon, Bob was a student of the legendary Eric Darling from whom he learned banjo and guitar. His repertoire displays a great love of Irish American and maritime songs He is one of the mainstays of the monthly sea shanty sing on Staten Island. Joining Bob are Bill Doerge and Norm & Jean Pederson. Cosponsored with and at the Good Coffeehouse at the Old Stone House, 336 Third Street in J.J. Setauket: David Massengill; Sun., Jan. 13 th ; 4pm Performing on dulcimer or guitar, punctuating his songs with stories and humor, Massengill can move you to laughter one minute and tears the next. His songs have been recorded by Joan Baez, David Bromberg, Chad Mitchell, The Roches, Lucy Kaplansky, Tom Russell, Nanci Griffith and his mentor, Dave Van Ronk (who said "[Massengill] takes the dull out of dulcimer!"), and praised by award winning composer Paul Williams ("David Massengill's music is a rare combination of heart, theatrics, innocence and edge."), folk legend Tom Paxton, and recently, the New York Times. Tim Eriksen, Friday, January 18 th, 7:30 pm Tim Eriksen is acclaimed for transforming American tradition with his startling interpretations of old ballads, love songs, shape note gospel and dance tunes from New England and Southern Appalachia. Tim s curiosity and passion have led him on many musical journeys besides American roots from punk rock and shape note gospel through South Indian classical music and Bosnian pop to world jazz and contemporary symphonic music all his explorations are linked by the qualities of intensity, directness, and authority which combine in a music that captures a truth about human experience and expresses it without apology. This promises to be a memorable evening of old, new, and unexpected music. 4 Zlatne Uste Golden Festival: January 18 th -19 th Two nights of Balkan music, dance & border crossing celebration. The Golden Festival is NY s largest Balkan music event, with more than 50 bands and acts on multiple stages, Balkan & Middle Eastern refreshments, vendors, as well as beautiful textiles on display. From international stars to local musicians, modern Balkan stylists to folk traditionalists, over 60 bands provide hours of ecstatic listening, dancing and partying. The husband and wife duo are much loved wherever they go and feel that "there are stories to tell, people to remember, and things that must be said" so, in addition to tickling your ears with delightful music, they weave a bit of history into the presentation of each song.
