6 Happy New Year! I hope your holidays were happy ones filled with music. This year starts with lots of music, a good omen for this year. Our exciting concerts include David Massengill, Tim Eriksen, as well as Bob Conroy & Norm & Jean Pederson. The exciting Mystic Chantey Blast, the PMN Winter Gathering, and the Golden Festival are also events for us to enjoy! In addition, we have our usual Irish Traditional Music Sessions, Sunnyside Singers Club, Upper West Side Song Swap the Folk Open Sing, and the Shanty Sing. This is also a great time to register for our Winter Folk Music Weekend in February. There are no workshops, just the music made by you and our special guests. We all have a great time. Come and join us. This issue is going to press before our 2019 board has been elected. Thank you to all the people who work so hard to keep FMSNY presenting wonderful concerts and many events where we can make our own music. Tom Weir is not running for the board again. Thank you, Tom, for all the work you put in as membership chair. Don t worry, you ll still see him at our events, such as the Folk Open Sing. We are so lucky to have so many people who are willing and able to continue on the board. Weekend Scholarships Available Applications are now being accepted to the Winter Weekend (February 8 10) for the George Parker Scholarship and the Mayer Scholarship. These funds provide either full or partial scholarships to individuals who could not otherwise attend and who have a strong interest in folk music, singing, and/or instrumental playing. TO APPLY: Please download an application from the website org or request an application form from the address below. The most important considerations are financial need and interest in folk music. The candidates will be considered and notified by mail. Please send it in before January 13th to: Marilyn Suffet, th Street, Sunnyside, NY Phone: E mail: ssuffet[at]nyc.rr.com In an effort to make our weekends available to more members, there are now several scholarship funds set up: George Parker Scholarship provides scholarships for each weekend to a club member otherwise unable to attend. The fund was established in memoriam by George s parents, the New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club, and other contributors. George was a young man and a friend of folk music who greatly enjoyed our weekends. Charles & Ilse Mayer Scholarship Fund provides scholarships for each weekend each year. This fund was set up in memoriam by board member Evy Mayer in honor of Evy s father Charles Mayer and her mother, Ilse Mayer. You may make a fully tax deductible contribution in any amount to any of the funds above by sending a check payable to Folk Music Society of New York (noted with the name of the scholarship memorial) to our treasurer, Heather Wood, 444 W. 54th St, #7, NYC, NY To establish a new named fund in honor of or in memoriam of a loved one, please contact any of our current board members (see list on page 17). 6

9 by Ruth Lipman When Anne and Wayne Price s grandson Vincent recently visited the Natural History Museum and the Planetarium with his parents, he concluded that the place was awesome. He will be three years old this month. Have an awesome birthday celebration, Vincent! Three of Anne s paintings were on display at the Blue Door Gallery in Yonkers as part of their Winterfest Art and Craft Show. It s too late to see the paintings there because the exhibit ended on December 29th. However, Anne often posts her artwork on Facebook. She has also joined the Riverdale Art Association. In January, Anne will put down her paintbrush and palette and head for Florida to visit and harmonize with her friend and singing partner, Rita Deutsch. In November, Anne and Wayne spent time with Anne s 93 year old mother in Phoenix, Arizona. We had a good time until Wayne fell and sprained his ankle and knee at the pool the day before we came home. He went to an Urgent Care center and got two braces. We got him a wheelchair at the airport, and since we got home he's been resting and healing. Wayne, we hope you feel better soon. On a sad note, Cy Adler died in September, 2018 at the age of 91. As reported in the obituary by Sam Roberts in the New York Times (10/19/18), Cy was a professor, author, mathematician, oceanographer, environmentalist and more. Known as the Pied Piper of Manhattan s Piers, he began leading the Great Saunter in 2008, an annual walk during which participants circle around Manhattan along the shoreline (about 32 miles). For an informative article about Cy, go to /10/19/obituaries/cy adler dead shorewalkers.html The club extends condolences to Cy s son, David and to the rest of their family.
