3 Theatre & Dance Theatre Fest West 2018 Friday 9 - Saturday 24 February Salisbury Playhouse, Salisbury Arts Centre, The Pound Arts Centre, Corsham and Trowbridge Hall Arts are joining forces once again to celebrate a variety of work created across the South West. Over two weeks in February the venues will be bursting with exciting shows for all ages, workshops and a Theatre Symposium that will see theatre makers, producers and performers from across the region discussing the hot topics of the day. Whey Down South The Narwhal Ensemble Wednesday 14 February 8pm (doors open 6.45pm) Tickets: concessions Join a theatrical quest to preserve the age old tradition of cheese rolling and fight the looming influence of big money. Will the community band together, or will it crumble like a finely aged cheddar? Jenny stands at the top of the hill. Her legs shake, her top lip trembles. The decline before her beckons. LEGO Beach INKBLOC Ensemble Friday 16 February 8pm (doors open 7.15pm) Tickets: concessions If 4.8 million pieces of LEGO washed up on your shore, what would you build? In 1997 a freak storm exposed a containership of LEGO to the power of the tide, scattering the pieces across the ocean floor. For the last 20 years, these pieces have continued to haunt one small community, causing secrets to be uncovered and memories to resurface. Based on true events and devised by the company, the play explores the unlikely connections that only tiny pieces of plastic can build. 4 Mummy Monster Lady Strong s Bonfire Friday 23 February 11am FREE but ticket required A frank, funny and ferocious show combining visual, physical and comic theatre about one woman s journey from a seeming state of balance into a monstrous state where she is no longer fully in control. An exploration of the times when you, as a parent lose it, it s an honest look at the pressures of parenting. Stay for the post show discussion. Set in Afghanistan in 2009, A Brave Face explores Post- Traumatic Stress, an unseen injury of war, and the impact it can have on even the closest of families. With engaging storytelling, physical dexterity and emotional insight, A Brave Face engages audiences across borders and boundaries. The Enormous Room Stopgap Dance Company Tuesday 20 March 8pm (doors open 7.15pm) Tickets: concessions In the latest epic production from Stopgap Dance Company, we follow a father and daughter gradually coming to terms with the loss of Jackie their wife and mother. Combining exquisite detail in movement with evocative text and design, this performance takes the audience somewhere in between this world and the next. Influenced by the greats, past and present, his style meanders between Dylanesque storytelling with finger-picked acoustic folk guitar work to slide and blues guitar and tap style. Wille & the Bandits Thursday 1 February Tickets: concessions Essentially Wille and the Bandits is a classic blues rock three piece much in the vein of Cream or The Jimi Hendrix experience. But in a similar way to how these bands pushed the genre in their time, Wille and the Bandits take their sound beyond what is expected of such a traditional line up. Louise Jordan: No Petticoats Here Thursday 15 February 8pm (doors open 7.15pm) Tickets: concessions Award winning singer, songwriter and musician Louise Jordan brings to life inspirational women who challenged expectations. From the woman who dressed as a soldier on the Western Front to the women football players banned by the FA (including St.Helens own Lily Parr), the ambulance drivers running the gauntlet of enemy fire in Flanders and the so-called surplus million single women. Inspirational women, working in a time of conflict, leaving a legacy. Zoe Schwarz s dynamic and commanding vocal delivery is both eclectic and suave at the same time; just like a chameleon, one part Janis Joplin, one Billie Holiday, and one Nina Simone. 12 Baroness Shirley Williams Saturday 3 March Tickets: concessions Baroness Shirley Williams has enjoyed a sterling career in both the Commons and the House of Lords. After an initial career in journalism in the 1950s, she became General Secretary of the Fabian Society and in 1964 was elected MP for Hitchin. She says originally she believed that being an MP would give her the power to bring about all kinds of good things for society. She admits she may be a little wiser now. Women (and men) of any age and sexual orientation will adore her unique take on matters of age, looks, weight, love and lust. Recommended age 14+ Image: Clare Summerskill Image: Tom Freshwater, Prejudice and Pride talk Prejudice and Pride Tuesday 17 April Tickets: 6 5 concessions Tom Freshwater will describe the challenges and benefits of the National Trust choosing to explore, for the first time, the LGBTQ histories connected with its places during 2017, the 50th anniversary of the Sexual Offences Act in As well as sharing some of the stories of men and women from over 25 places in the care of the National Trust connected with LGBTQ heritage, the discussion will touch on the experience of introducing a new way of Challenging History to such a large and well-established institution. Tom Freshwater is the National Public Programmes Manager for National Trust. He leads a team to research, develop and deliver annual thematic programming across and beyond National Trust places. Phill Jupitus: Juplicity Friday 27 April 8pm (doors open 7.15pm) Tickets: 15 Join stand-up comedian, poet, improviser, and TV stalwart Phill Jupitus for over an hour of tales, laughs and diversions. His human rights inspirations include Mahatma Gandhi, Sylvia Pankhurst and Martin Luther King. In 2009, he co-proposed a UN Global Human Rights Index, to measure and rank the human rights record of every country with the aim of creating a human rights league table to highlight the best and worst countries and thereby incentivise governments to clean up their record and improve their human rights ranking. Talking Pictures will showcase a varied range of work by artists who have submitted their work for selection by a panel of professionals. We are delighted to have acclaimed cartoonist Roger Penwill, artist & illustration lecturer Vincent Larkin and artist & animator Matthew Dean on the selection panel for this open exhibition as they are all extremely knowledgeable. Ground-Breaking Wiltshire & the Wider World - Exploring Landscape & Conflict Saturday 3 March Saturday 30 April Connecting with the centenary of the end of the First World War this year, we are pleased to be working in partnership with Swindon Museum & Art Gallery to show a selection of works from their Modern British Art collection in relation to the Cicatrix project. C I C A T R I X - the scar of a healed wound is a multimedia international touring project travelling throughout the South West of England, across Commonwealth countries and as far away as Montreal in Quebec, offering audiences further insight into the WW1 legacy surrounding Salisbury Plain through the artists interpretations of this scarred and ancient landscape and its connections across the globe. Henny Burnett, Susan Francis and Prudence Maltby have collaborated with artists from Commonwealth countries Australia, New Zealand and Canada, all of whom would have had troops train on Salisbury Plain during the First World War.
