NOVEMBER RBC Plaza Pulse 2015 FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER On November 19, I attended a Building Owners and Managers general meeting entitled What Really Happened in the 2015 Legislative Session and What

In 2015 the legislature passed a $42 billion dollar state budget leaving a surplus bottom line of $865 million. An outstanding question about the surplus is, will it grow or will it be spent and how?

Other accomplishments of 2015 include a new office building for lawmakers and I couldn t not mention the audience s favorite, the ability to now buy growlers on Sunday s!

2 NOVEMBER RBC Plaza Pulse 2015 FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER On November 19, I attended a Building Owners and Managers general meeting entitled What Really Happened in the 2015 Legislative Session and What Should We Expect in 2016? It was great to hear the panel of journalists from MPR, KSTP, Pioneer Press and Star Tribune on this subject. In 2015 the legislature passed a $42 billion dollar state budget leaving a surplus bottom line of $865 million. An outstanding question about the surplus is, will it grow or will it be spent and how? The panelists projected with the current surplus this could mount to anywhere from a $1.2 to $2 million dollar surplus for fiscal year Other accomplishments of 2015 include a new office building for lawmakers and I couldn t not mention the audience s favorite, the ability to now buy growlers on Sunday s! When the group reconvenes in February 2016, the bonding and minimum wage bill, transportation bill and commercial industrial taxes will still be waiting to be settled. As many know, there is a significant concern about Minnesota s shrinking work force due to the continued retirement of baby boomers. It was said that there will be more retiring workers in the next 10 years than in the last 50 years alone. Keeping college graduates here in Minnesota after graduation, keeping women in the workforce while having families, and keeping baby boomers in positions will all help the workforce population. In the coming year legislative, senate and presidential elections will require a good turnout at the polls. As we close 2015, let s recognize the dedication of those who run our cities, state and the country and thank them for their dedication to the welfare and safety of its citizens. If you haven t checked it out yet, it s a great spot for picking up holiday items for your special someones! Tips for Turkey Time Safety Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, broiling, or boiling food. If you must leave the room, even for a short period of time, turn off the stove. When you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, stay in the home, and use a timer to remind you to check on the burners. If you have young children, use the stove's back burners whenever possible. Keep children and pets at least three (3) feet away from the stove. When you cook, wear clothing with tight-fitting sleeves. Keep potholders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper and plastic bags, towels, and anything else that can burn, away from your stovetop Always clean up food and grease from burners and stovetops after every cooking session. NOVEMBER 2015 FRIENDLY FACES CHRIS WASLEY Chris Wasley is the Project Manager for the Harvard Maintenance team who provides the janitorial services for the property.

He is leading the transition to day cleaning on behalf of Harvard (see page 4 for more information about this). In his free time, Chris is an avid bicyclist and creates stain glass art.

NOVEMBER RBC Plaza Pulse 2015 DAY CLEANING COMING TO RBC PLAZA In an effort to continually improve building systems and sustainability, Cushman & Wakefield NorthMarq, in conjunction with Harvard

This change will take effective January 4, 2016.

With day cleaning, cleaners will be scheduled in two overlapping shifts from 6:00 am to 2:00 pm and noon to 8:00 pm. During the work day, cleaners will be cleaning in tenant spaces.

Equipment is being replaced with new, quieter equipment including quieter vacuums for daytime use.

4 NOVEMBER RBC Plaza Pulse 2015 DAY CLEANING COMING TO RBC PLAZA In an effort to continually improve building systems and sustainability, Cushman & Wakefield NorthMarq, in conjunction with Harvard Maintenance, the janitorial provider for RBC Plaza, are in preparation stages to convert from the current night janitorial services to day janitorial services. This change will take effective January 4, Day Cleaning is NOT Night Cleaning done during the daytime it is an entirely new approach to cleaning that minimizes disruption to building occupants while creating a positive experience for all. With day cleaning, cleaners will be scheduled in two overlapping shifts from 6:00 am to 2:00 pm and noon to 8:00 pm. During the work day, cleaners will be cleaning in tenant spaces. Cleaners are trained not to interrupt meetings or open closed doors and occupants can wave off a cleaner if he or she comes by at an inconvenient time. Equipment is being replaced with new, quieter equipment including quieter vacuums for daytime use. This transition allows Harvard to provide improved service to building occupants as they will be able to respond to requests more quickly. In addition, there will be energy savings to be had. Currently, cleaners are in the building until approximately 1:00 am on weeknights. With day cleaning, they will be out of the building at approximately 8:00 pm, allowing the lights to be turned off several hours earlier each night. This will reduce the building s carbon footprint and result in cost savings, assuming RBC Plaza occupants do their part to turn the lights off in their spaces when they are the last to leave. The transition will also allow cleaners to work during the day which is the most sought-after schedule for cleaners because it allows cleaners more time with their families and safer access to transportation at the end of their shifts.
