2 ADVERTISEMENT MFA Member Preview June 9 July 7 Opens to the public July 8 Giandomenico Tiepolo, The Charlatan (detail), Oil on canvas. Museu Nacional d Art de Catalunya, Barcelona. Francesc Cambó Bequest, Museu Nacional d Art de Catalunya, Barcelona. Generously supported by an anonymous foundation. Additional support from Firestone and Parson Inc., Alexander M. Levine and Dr. Rosemarie D. Bria-Levine, and Patricia Scangas and Matthew Dietel. This exhibition is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.

3 From the President Simply the Best July is a time for adventure. Come with us to explore new ideas and destinations with WGBH programs that celebrate the people and places of summer. Our first stop is close to home, with the life and times of Red Sox slugger Ted Williams. A fixture in left field wearing his familiar number 9, Williams hit a Red Sox-record 51 home runs and drove in 1,839 runs during his 19-year career with the team. But the Hall of Famer had a fascinating life beyond Fenway Park. He served as a flight instructor in War II, flew combat missions in the Korean War, and earned a reputation as an expert fly fisherman. This month, in honor of the 100th anniversary of The Splendid Splinter s birth, American Masters presents Ted Williams (page 1), a new documentary that explores the complicated relationships that the baseball legend had with family, teammates, press and fans. Boston fans are the absolute best, and I ve loved learning about how challenging a time Ted had with them, said David Ortiz, Red Sox 10-time All- Star and executive producer for Big Papi Productions, one of the producers of the film. What an honor to help tell his story for American Masters and PBS. Beyond the ballpark, celebrate other summer traditions with PBS Summer of Adventure. You don t need to get on a plane or brave the tourists to visit the vibrant immigrant communities in cities coast to coast with Chef Marcus Samuelsson in No Passport Required (page 13). Discover how our streets and highways including Boston Post Road have connected the nation and sometimes divided communities in 10 Streets That Changed America (page 1), and experience the beauty and danger of some of the world s most precarious places to live in Earth s Natural Wonders Life at the Extremes: Surviving the Extreme (page 14). Summer is traditionally a time of television reruns, but WGBH brings you original content all year round. And, with WGBH Passport (page 8), WGBH s on-demand library of current and past public television programs, WGBH members can watch their favorites anytime, on any device. Wherever you go, we re there for you, all summer long. And we thank you for your generous support. The US Labor Department has issued new rules to raise wages and improve working conditions for carnival workers, 80 percent of whom are Mexican citizens with H-B visas. What s the balance between workers rights and the government s responsibility to help small businesses? This documentary covers a six-year examination of the carnival industry s labor struggles by following a carnival owner, a labor recruiter and two workers from a small Mexican town. America ReFramed/ Farewell Ferris Wheel Tue, 7/3 at 8pm Restitution and Respect In 1887, the US government broke up Native American reservations and established the Indian Trust Fund to disperse revenues generated by mining, oil, gas and timber leases. More than a century later, Elouise Cobell discovered the mismanaged trust fund accounts and filed the largest class-action lawsuit ever against the federal government to recoup the money owed to 300,000 Native Americans for the missing lease payments from their mineral-rich lands. Producer and director Melinda Janko celebrates the indomitable spirit of this petite Blackfeet warrior from Montana who wouldn t give up until she got her people what they deserved. America ReFramed/100 Years: One Woman s Fight for Justice Tue, 7/10 at 8pm is produced and distributed by WGBH Boston, American Public Television and WNET/New York in association with PBS and the National Educational Telecommunications Association. This documentary traces George s path to activism, inspired by his family s history of fighting for justice for Native Americans. His focus: shutting down liquor stores in Whiteclay, a tiny town of 10 people that exists only to sell beer to the reservation. With 5 million cans sold a year, the results have been devastating. But tribal activists are fighting back to stop the exploitation of its most vulnerable population. America ReFramed/On a Knife Edge Tue, 7/17 at 8pm Whose Race? The Cherokee Nation entered into a treaty with the US government in 1866 that granted freedom and full tribal membership to Cherokee slaves and their descendants, called the Freemen. More than 150 years later, the Cherokee Nation a wealthy tribe with land, casinos and business holdings began denying tribal rights to Freeman descendants, who identify as Black American Indians, because they are not members of the tribe by blood. This documentary describes the largely untold history and continuing battle over race, identity and the sovereign rights of Native American people. America ReFramed/By Blood Tue, 7/4 at 8pm Modern Revolutionary In 1775, Concord patriots fired the infamous shot heard round the world that began the American Revolution and defined a nation. Now an 84-yearold woman is waging another war that pits a citizen activist against the mighty behemoth. For three years, Jean Hill has been trying to rid Concord of single-serve plastic bottles of water. Facing strong opposition from local merchants and the bottled water industry, Hill stands strong, rallying troops for a more eco-friendly consumer habits. 28 89.7 WGBH, Boston s Local NPR WGBH News Welcomes Two New Hires Two experienced journalists have joined the WGBH News team in newly created positions: Mary Blake takes on the role of 89.7 night news anchor/reporter, and Saraya Wintersmith joins as full-time Dorchester reporter. Blake is an award-winning news veteran in the Boston area, known for her work as an anchor at WBZ. She was part of the team that won a Peabody Award for Overall Excellence for coverage of the Boston Marathon bombings and the 01 Associated Press Award for Investigative Reporting. Blake also earned the Achievement in Radio Award for Best Newscaster at WRKO. At WGBH, she hosts All Things Considered on Sundays, on top of helping the nighttime news team prepare lead stories for Morning Edition. Wintersmith also brings years of experience to WGBH, reporting from the Virginia state house for WCVE in Richmond. Prior to that, she worked at CBS Radio affiliate WNEW as a fill-in reporter and daypart manager. In her new role for WGBH News, Wintersmith works several days a week from the Dorchester Bureau in Field s Corner. Phillip Martin wins Award for Investigative Reporting WGBH News Senior Investigative Reporter Phillip Martin was named a 017 Sigma Delta Chi Award winner for his four-part series, Gangs of Nantucket. He received the award at a ceremony on June 8. Eric in the Evening Greatness through the Ages Pittsburgh native Ahmad Jamal started playing the piano at age 3, and his musical career is still going strong more than eight decades later. His exquisite touch and mercurial improvisations have influenced the evolution of jazz, from Big Band through electronic music, and inspired generations of musicians. Host Eric Jackson features some of Jamal s best performances in a special show celebrating the jazz legend s 88th birthday. Sun, 7/8 at 9pm Martin s investigation followed Henry Lemus Calderon, an undocumented Salvadoran teenager, as well as other members of the immigrant community living on Nantucket in Massachusetts. Calderon was arrested as part of a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement raid on Nantucket after a high school resource officer identified him as a gang member in this unlikely region of the state. The award was announced by the Society of Professional Journalists, which has recognized the country s top journalists every year since 193. Martin wrote and produced Gangs of Nantucket over a seven-month period. The series was edited by WGBH News Executive Editor Aaron Schachter and Senior Editor Ken Cooper. We are very proud that Gangs of Nantucket was recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists for the Sigma Delta Chi Award, said WGBH News Director Kate Zachry. This series is the result of months of reporting by Phillip Martin and is an example of the type of quality investigative journalism WGBH News delivers every day. 30 WCAI, Cape and Islands NPR Station A Cape Cod Notebook Writer Named Guggenheim Fellow By Mindy Todd, WCAI Host and Managing Director for Editorial Robert Finch, essayist for A Cape Cod Notebook, has been named a Guggenheim Fellow. A WCAI favorite, Finch began airing his weekly essays on WCAI in 005. Finch is a nature writer living in Wellfleet. His audio essay, called A Cape Cod Notebook, won the 006 New England Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Radio Writing. He has written about Cape Cod for 40 years, publishing six collections of essays. What interests me as a writer is the intersection of human nature and natural history, to ask of any natural experience: What is the human meaning of that? he said. Since 195, the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation has offered fellowships to artists, scholars and scientists in all fields. This year, there were 173 fellowships awarded from some 3,000 applications. Seven of them were in the field of general nonfiction. The amount of each Guggenheim grant varies, but they are designed to support a fellow who is working on a proposed project for a year. Finch said he is keeping the nature of his project to himself for the time being. I was thrilled when I was notified in March that I had been nominated as a fellow. Given the stiff competition, it was completely unexpected but most welcome, Finch said. I will miss doing my weekly radio commentary for WCAI during the period of my grant, but I am grateful for the opportunity to pursue a project I have been wanting to do for some time. Finch said he fell into the craft of nature writing by accident when early in his career he had gotten a part-time job at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History and began writing a nature column for local weekly newspapers. It is, of course, a great honor to be included in the illustrious company of past and present fellows that includes such wonderful writers as Paul Brodeur, Annie Dillard, Bill McKibben and Barry Lopez, Finch said. But it also is gratifying to have your life s work recognized by such a distinguished organization. Guest commentators will fill in over the next year with an occasional essay from Finch himself. Hear A Cape Cod Notebook on WCAI every Tuesday at 8:30am and 5:45pm.
