3 From the President The Sounds of Summer What is more magical than an evening of music under the stars? Add a picnic blanket, some tasty summer fare and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and you have the perfect Tanglewood experience. If you can t get to the Berkshires to visit the BSO s summer home, 99.5 WCRB will take you there for symphony performances. Come along with us this month as we head to Western Massachusetts, where you can indulge in the calm and contentment of Tanglewood even if you re at home, in the car or on the beach. Being able to bring the Tanglewood concerts to our radio audience is one of the joys of WCRB, says Anthony Rudel, 99.5 WCRB station manager. Our team led by Brian McCreath with host Ron Della Chiesa makes you feel like you re right in the Berkshires. Brian and Ron convey the beauty of the setting and the special points of history as they share with listeners the experience of being at Tanglewood. There are always a few surprises in the mix. Tune in for John Williams Film Night on Saturday, Aug. 11, and listen to the magnificent maestro himself at Tanglewood as he joins this year s celebration of the music of Hollywood and beyond, featuring the Boston Pops and BSO Music Director Andris Nelsons. On Saturday, Aug. 5, the BSO presents The Bernstein Centennial Celebration at Tanglewood, with highlights from Leonard Bernstein as a composer and conductor, including selections from West Side Story, Candide and Mass. You won t want to miss 99.5 WCRB s broadcast of this grand event dedicated to our native son from Lawrence, Massachusetts, held on the 100th anniversary of his birth. You can enjoy even more original material celebrating Bernstein at our new site on Classical.org. Our broadcasts from the Shed at Tanglewood are another way that WGBH connects us across the Commonwealth. Between the summer concerts there and our live broadcasts from Symphony Hall throughout the rest of the year, WCRB airs more performances by our hometown orchestra than any other radio station in the country 54 in 017 alone. Providing such extensive access to the arts is central to our public media mission. Thank you for helping make it possible and please join us Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm, and Sundays at 7pm, wherever you happen to be this month, to enjoy the sounds of summer. RCN: 94 Comcast: 956 Cox: 807 FiOS: 473 Charter: 181 Los Angeles of Long Ago showcase for independent films by and about communities of difference. This month, spotlights nature and the environment, along with a special commemorative historical documentary. Los Angles is a lesson in industrialization: To make its land suitable for modern life, it drained its wetlands, paved over its prairies and exterminated its predatory animals. In the premiere of Lost LA, explore the complicated relationship between the big city and its natural environment. This new series uses archival material to retrace the history of Southern California before the arrival of Anglo settlers who transformed it into a sprawling metropolis. Lost LA/Wild LA Mon, 8/6 at 6pm Fighting for Survival Once a nomadic people, the Inupiaq were relocated by the US government more than a century ago to Kivalina, Alaska, an island in the North Pacific. Today, neglected by bureaucrats thousands of miles away, the villagers worry about a crumbling sea wall that fails to protect them from rising ocean levels. And, as the melting ice opens up the North to tanker traffic, they fear that an oil spill could wipe out their food supply and their way of life. This unflinching documentary shows how climate change threatens the longterm survival of these hard-working indigenous people. America ReFramed/Kivalina Sun, 8/19 at 6pm Like the channel? Like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter. Climate Calamities Take a trip to Coastal South Carolina and Georgia to learn about different perspectives on sea-level rise and other environmental changes that are expected to have a major impact on the entire Eastern Seaboard. Naturalist and Emmy Award-winning host Patrick McMillan travels from the sands of Hunting Island State Park and all along the coast to see firsthand how the people who live in these seaside communities deal with the economic and social effects of climate change. Sea Change Fri, 8/4 on 8pm A Force of Nature Fueled by a desire to safeguard Utah s national parks, economics student Tim DeChristopher registers as Bidder 70 in a controversial oil and gas lease auction to stop the sale of parcels of pristine land. In December 008, he successfully bid on,500 acres in Utah s Red Rock country for $1.8 million with no intention of paying, which landed him in jail but eventually attracted national attention to the issue of land preservation. Witness how one citizen s role in enacting change can redefine patriotism for a new generation. America ReFramed/Bidder 70 Tue, 8/8 at 8pm Return to the Emerald Isle It was 1979, and Northern Ireland was a decade into the Troubles, a bloody conflict that shrouded all of Ireland in gloom. Pope John Paul II, just one year into his transformative papacy, made a special trip to meet the Irish people, bringing them a message of hope that eventually led to a lasting peace. Watch the documentary of this historical papal visit the same week that Pope Francis travels to Ireland 40 years later. 28 89.7 WGBH, Boston s Local NPR Beat the Press brings home New England Emmy Award WGBH s award-winning, longstanding program Beat the Press took home a New England Emmy Award in June for Best Interview/Discussion Program from the Boston/New England chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Veteran journalist Emily Rooney, who has been hosting the weekly WGBH show since 1998, covers the major issues in media, new and old. It airs every Friday on WGBH at 7pm and features a panel of critical thinkers, including Northeastern University journalism professor Dan Kennedy and WGBH s Callie Crossley, host of Under the Radar with Callie Crossley and Basic Black. Sharing the Emmy honor with Rooney are Beat the Press Managing Editor Jeff Keating, Producer Antonio Caban, Reporter Adam Reilly and Director Cody Contois. WGBH News Profiles Exonerated Man The New England Center for Investigative Reporting (NECIR) and WGBH News will air a four-part series next month by NECIR reporter Christopher Burrell about Frederick Clay, a Roslindale man who was exonerated after decades of false imprisonment. In 1981, Clay was convicted of first-degree murder for the 1979 murder of a cab driver and sentenced to life in prison without parole. For 38 years, Clay remained in prison, until his release on August Eric in the Evening New Orleans Legend Growing up the oldest of four musical brothers in New Orleans, Branford Marsalis (right) made a name for himself as a premiere saxophonist with the formation of his own quartet in Over three decades, the three-time Grammy winner has shared the stage with jazz greats including Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock as well as pianist and boyhood friend Harry Connick Jr. Eric Jackson features the work of Marsalis in special show celebrating the musician s Aug. 6 birthday. Sun, 8/19 at 9pm 8, 017 after key testimony in his court case was thrown out because the witness gave it while under hypnosis. Other factors leading to his exoneration included new DNA evidence that supported his claims of innocence, and the failure of his original trial attorney to pursue potential alternative suspects for Clay s alleged crimes. Long after the media attention faded, Burrell continued his follow-up with Clay, who is now living in a basement apartment in Lowell where he struggles to make ends meet in a low-wage job. It s rare that we get to hear about the personal lives of people affected by the state s prison system, said Aaron Schachter, WGBH News executive producer. We were very excited when Chris reached out to Mr. Clay and found that he was willing to not only speak with us, but also to follow him for nearly a year to document what life is like for someone who was wrongly convicted and spent the majority of his life in prison. 29 WCAI, Cape and Islands NPR Station WCAI Adds Social Media Expertise By Mindy Todd, WCAI Host and Managing Director for Editorial WCAI welcomes Liz Lerner to the newsroom team as Web and Social Media Coordinator! Lerner hosts Weekend Edition on Sunday mornings and helps to oversee the station s digital efforts, including the WCAI website. Her background includes experience in film and television as a video photographer, editor, producer and host. Her experience working at several community television stations and her work on documentary films will add a new dimension to the station s social media efforts, said WCAI News Director Steve Junker. Liz put together a mini-movie on right whales for social media to promote our recent news series, and she did another mini-movie for an episode of the Point with Coast Guard rescue teams, Junker said. It s the kind of creative approach that helps us reach out to new audiences. Lerner will continue to produce mini-movies for news series and when other visual opportunities present themselves. I m thrilled to help share those stories with our listeners on the web and on social media, Lerner said. They ve started a lot of conversations. Using her skills in documentary film and television, Lerner said she enjoys helping to tell the visual side of some of WCAI s radio stories. We live in a beautiful place, so it s always fun to share it with others. Lerner received her master of science degree in broadcast journalism in 010 from the University of Illinois. Her enthusiasm and expertise in so many areas are proving to be assets to the WCAI team, Junker said. She can host on air, she can run the website, she can manage the social media Liz has so many skills, it s great having her at WCAI. A longtime fan of WCAI, Lerner said she is excited to be working on the programs that she listens to regularly. WCAI has an amazing ability to tap into Cape Cod s unique issues and culture they really are stories that you can t get anywhere else. 30 99.5 WCRB Celebrating Leonard Bernstein at 100 By Anthony Rudel, 99.5 WCRB Station Manager I was lucky to grow up in New York during Maestro Leonard Bernstein s tenure at the New York Philharmonic, and to this day I recall watching him rehearse the orchestra. He brought an incredible energy, excitement and engagement to every moment, and all that made its way into the performances and across the footlights right to the audience. His Young People s Concerts were imbued with the same commitment to making the audience feel like part of the show. In those legendary concerts, the great maestro never talked down to the audience, and that is what made his words seem so important. In 1984, I was invited to attend Bernstein s incredible recording sessions of West Side Story. He was demanding of the performers, knowing as only the composer can exactly what he wanted in each note, each word and each phrase. And yet, when it was time for a break, that demanding, harsh maestro instantly became the tender person whose wit and enjoyment of wordplay was impossible to miss. There is much more I could share, but please visit Classical.org for a more complete Bernstein centennial experience. Listen to WCRB where the boy from Lawrence, Massachusetts, will be properly celebrated all month. Saturday, Aug. 5, 018, would be Bernstein s 100th birthday, so tune in to WCRB that evening at 8 as we broadcast live from Tanglewood. The celebration of this amazing musician and humanitarian will be marked in many of this August s Tanglewood programs.
