3 From the President Issues of our Times Facebook has been an extraordinary innovation, allowing us to connect with friends and family across distance and time. But that personal sharing platform also has been used to exploit our private data and spread misinformation. Opioids offered great promise as pain-relieving medication. But their widespread use and highly addictive nature have led to the deadliest drug epidemic in US history. This month, WGBH examines these two major issues facing our society with unflinching focus and the in-depth reporting that is the hallmark of our public media documentary work. In The Facebook Dilemma, Frontline investigates a series of warnings to Facebook as the company grew from a dorm room project to a global empire. With insider accounts, Frontline tells the story of how decisions made by the company as it sought increased profit and new users transformed Facebook into a media company with vast surveillance capabilities and a role in social movements and elections around the world. While the revelations about Facebook only recently exploded in the news, WGBH s Frontline team has been digging into this story for the past year. At Frontline we believe serious times demand serious journalism, says Frontline Executive Producer Raney Aronson-Rath. Our investigation gets at the truth behind the headlines, tracing the safety and privacy problems that have accompanied Facebook s evolution into a company with unprecedented power. Then in Addiction, Nova addresses the stark reality that drug addiction is the biggest public health crisis facing us today, driven by a dramatic rise in the abuse of opioids like OxyContin, heroin, and fentanyl. Nearly every family in America has been affected by addiction, yet it remains poorly understood, largely stigmatized, and finding treatment can be a daunting process, says Paula S. Apsell, senior executive producer of Nova. Our film helps cut through the confusion by presenting the latest science on what we now know is a treatable brain disorder and not a moral failing. Nova travels the country to hear firsthand from individuals and families struggling with addiction, and to meet with researchers on the frontlines of the opioid crisis, including those here in Boston, working on new approaches for prevention and recovery. The deeply reported science in Addiction is just the latest example of Nova s extraordinary body of work and contribution to science education under the leadership of Paula, who was recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the News and Documentary Emmy Awards ceremony on Oct. 1. Paula was honored for her distinguished career over four decades in science journalism, including 33 years at the helm of Nova, which was cited for doing more to increase science literacy and enhance the public understanding of science than any show on American television. We are proud to continue our commitment to this powerful work in journalism, and we are grateful to have your support as we pursue our educational and public service mission. At WCRB, we reflect the great variety of activity in our two cornerstone weekend series: the Boston Symphony Orchestra broadcasts, live from Symphony Hall (Saturdays at 8pm), and WCRB In Concert (Sundays at 7pm). To set up the season for you, the broadcast on Saturday, Oct. 6, features a concert from the spring that was never aired, combined with a preview of the season, all hosted by WCRB Executive Producer Brian McCreath. As for WCRB In Concert, our partnerships with presenters and ensembles will delight any listener. 30 WCAI, Cape and Islands NPR Station WCAI Welcomes New Director of Development In June, WCAI said a fond farewell to Managing Director of Development Sarah Tribuzio, who went on to manage her family s business on Cape Cod. Replacing her is longtime WGBH colleague Yuri Stern, who will lead the development team. Stern has many years of experience in fundraising and development, most recently overseeing WGBH s member engagement department while also developing its robust events program. I am excited to work with so many talented people at WCAI and look forward to becoming a part of the station and the Cape, Coast and Islands community at large, he said. In his new role, Stern will work with Beth Liles, WCAI development manager, and Alecia Orsini, special projects assistant. Under Yuri s leadership, we look forward to the opportunity to expand our existing events and create new ones, as well as develop fundraising programs for our members and listeners to enjoy, Orsini said. Stephen Colella and Resa Giles, who both work as WCAI sponsorship account executives, will also work on Stern s team. WCAI s development team is responsible for the station s fundraising initiatives, including on-air membership drives, vehicle donations, business sponsorships, events and member relations. Jack Callahan, WGBH director of on-air fundraising and membership marketing, will help Stern oversee the station s membership drives. Callahan has been and will continue to be on site during drives, helping with on-air work, producing and leading drive strategy. WCAI staff and volunteers, who are also coordinated by the development office, have been busy helping with special performances on Martha s Vineyard, Nantucket and the Cape and Coast with Paula Poundstone, Peter Sagal and David Sedaris. Other events included Says You! shows, Cape Cod Baseball League games, a community parade, the annual Woods Hole Science Stroll, as well as book, concert and film festivals. The station will take advantage of Stern s leadership and broad experience with a slate of events and programs in the coming months that engage community members, including Philanthropy Day on Cape Cod, the annual Quality of Life Expo, and WCAI s popular winter Pub Nights Series. Visit WCAI at capeandislands.org for live streams, and sign up for WCAI s weekly e-news to get information about events, sponsors and programming.
