3 From the President Dramatic Effect There is nothing like a good drama. It pulls you into the lives of its characters and makes them as familiar as old friends. We sympathize when they have bad days, and we cheer them on when they find love or solve the crime. WGBH has a long history of creating and presenting the best in drama, from classic to cutting edge. Each story brings a new world to life with rich vibrancy that draws us in while expanding our perspective. This month, we celebrate the power of dramatic storytelling on both WGBH and WGBX. The season seven premiere of Death in Paradise (pg. 1) takes us to a Caribbean Island to share the story of a police inspector starting his life over in new surroundings as a widower and single father. We feel his pain and his pride when he makes a happy home on the island for his daughter but then supports her decision to leave to pursue her own dreams. With Masterpiece s Man in an Orange Shirt (pg. 14), we pay tribute to LGBTQ Pride Month, and to the personal victories of those who have battled discrimination, with two love stories set 60 years apart that chronicle the challenges of gay life in England. This two-part drama stars the magnificent Vanessa Redgrave as the grandmother who tethers both worlds. Watch WGBH s Channel (pg. 1) for even more LGBTQ-themed shows in June for Pride Month. Today there are more opportunities than ever to watch drama. But at WGBH, we have the experience and the knowledge to select only the finest the shows that make you laugh and cry and think and come back for more. We know what you like to watch because you told us, and we listened, says Ron Bachman, senior director of programming at WGBH. We are choosy about our dramas, and we re committed to bringing you shows that are interesting and important. Can t get enough drama on our two channels? Log on to WGBH Passport for thousands of hours of additional programming, including full seasons of many current and past series and selected dramas that are available only online to WGBH members. Our dramas matter to us because they matter to you. Thank you for tuning into WGBH and WGBX for the hand-picked shows that make us unique. We love bringing you our very best every day. And we re grateful for your support. Together, the young people learn that every age of activists stands on the shoulders of those who came before and that activism needs to continue, even in the light of great social strides. Transgender teen Jazz Jennings narrates. Coming Out: A 50 Year History Wed, 6/0 at 9pm Families in Recovery Behind every opioid addiction, there s a person with a story to tell. And each story has a ripple effect. This documentary follows the journey of three mothers who have served time in New York state jails for opioid-related crimes. Told in the first person, with no narration, the film follows the arc of their lives before drugs, the point at which addiction took over, and the effect it has had on their families. Feel the women s frustration toward this public health crisis, and witness the heartbreak when it impacts loved ones. Local, USA/Opioids from Inside Mon, 6/5 at 9pm worldchannel.org 1

28 89.7 WGBH, Boston s Local NPR Emerson College Honors WGBH s Tina Martin Emmy-nominated, award-winning WGBH News reporter Tina Martin was inducted into the WERS Hall of Fame on June during Emerson College s alumni weekend. The annual ceremony honors the achievements of alumni or faculty who have contributed to the success of WERS 88.9 FM, one of Emerson s two radio stations. WGBH Executive Arts Editor Jared Bowen, a fellow Emerson graduate (Class of 98), introduced Martin at the ceremony. I am honored to be inducted into the WERS Hall of Fame, Martin said. Emerson College has such a rich legacy of excellence. Being on the air at WERS was a huge part of my training while at Emerson. I am proud to be an Emerson graduate and proud to have my accomplishments in journalism recognized by the college and by WERS, she said. We are thrilled that Tina is being recognized for the distinguished reporting and storytelling she brings to the WGBH News airwaves every week, said WGBH News Director Kate Zachry. Congratulations, Tina! WGBH News Reflects on the Past 50 Years One of the 0th century s most remarkable and tragic years has inspired WGBH News to embark on a year-long retrospective of the past 50 years, both nationally and locally. The year was 1968, when Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy were assassinated, and when humans first orbited the moon with the Apollo 8 mission. WGBH News is looking back on that historic Eric in the Evening Lyrical Pianist Whether playing solo or in a quintet, Kenny Barron is recognized worldwide for his talent and artistry. First as a sideman with groups led by James Moody and later with Yusef Lateef, Barron has distinguished himself in his own right, earning the honor of Jazz Master from the National Endowment for the Arts in 010. Host Eric Jackson celebrates the pianist s June 9 birthday with a special show devoted to his work. Sun, 6/10 at 9pm year to see how society has progressed in the half century that followed and what work is still ahead. The project, which is a collaboration of radio and web stories from WGBH News, includes one installment featuring Barbara Howard s story for All Things Considered on the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Fair Housing Act, which is intended to protect minority renters and buyers from discrimination. Howard took a look at how Boston has evolved since then and what challenges exist for the future was a year full of big, memorable national events, said Ken Cooper, senior editor at WGBH News. We re exploring their impact on the Boston area and Boston s connections to those events, with an eye on what those events mean today. 29 99.5 WCRB It s Not Quite Summer Vacation, But By Anthony Rudel, 99.5 WCRB Station Manager June is a month of transitions. It falls between our Memorial Day and Fourth of July national holidays when school ends and the summer vacations begin! But most important, it marks the end of the Boston Symphony Orchestra s Symphony Hall season in May and the start of our Tanglewood broadcasts in July. So, make a note to tune in on Saturday, June 30 at 8pm for Brian McCreath s Tanglewood Preview, a two-hour, music-filled introduction to the more than 0 broadcasts you ll be able to enjoy throughout July and August. Travel is another big part of summer. Wherever you go, it s easy to take WCRB with you. Just download the free app (search classical radio Boston in your smartphone s app store), and you re all set to jet, accompanied by your favorite radio station. And programmatically, we are playing to your wanderlust by featuring 1 great orchestras from around the world on Symphony at 8. Beginning Friday June 1, every weeknight at 8, you ll hear a magnificent symphony interpreted by a different orchestra from across the globe. One night you might be in San Francisco, and the next in Berlin. But every night, the music will be superb. Then, every weeknight at 10, we ll play another piece by the composer whose symphony we played at 8pm, but on a smaller scale. Rather than a full symphony orchestra, this piece will feature a chamber ensemble. So, if we played a Beethoven Symphony at 8pm tune in at 10pm, and enjoy one of his incredible quartets. You won t be disappointed. We also have a full and exciting slate of WCRB In Concert broadcasts (Sundays at 7pm), and BSO encore performances (Saturdays at 8pm) all month long. Please see the schedule below. Have a great June! 30 WCAI, Cape and Islands NPR Station Telling Stories that Matter about the Cape, Coast and Islands By Mindy Todd, WCAI Host and Managing Director for Editorial Big changes are on tap at WCAI, with a new roster of journalists focusing on the people and places that make the Cape, Coast and Islands unique. Kathryn Eident becomes the sole host of WCAI s Morning Edition as Brian Morris moves to All Things Considered. Morris will continue to produce segments for WCAI s Hidden History series. Eident, who also serves as WCAI s senior producer of news, said one of her goals is to introduce a range of voices from around the region into the newscasts. We ve got a lot of plans to improve WCAI and bring more local news to our airwaves, she said. It s an exciting time for the station. WCAI also welcomes Hayley Fager to the WCAI morning team. A graduate of Colgate University, Fager produced Postcards Home, a KCRW series of audio postcards from immigrants in the US to family members in their home countries. She was also host and producer of Eco Chicago, an environmental news program. I m excited to join the team at WCAI as the newest Morning Edition producer, she said. I look forward to supporting the station s work telling stories that matter about the Cape, Coast and Islands as part of a lively daily news show. In other moves, Steve Junker is stepping down as host of All Things Considered to concentrate on his existing role as WCAI s news director. All Things Considered has been such a part of my life. I m not sure how my afternoons will feel normal without it, said Junker, who has hosted the show since 011. Fortunately, he will not be gone from the WCAI airwaves completely. Junker will fill in on air as needed and will continue to produce the station s popular Fishing News and Weekend Outlook. It s a sign of the strength of WCAI that we continue to grow as a station and in our ability to cover the region, he said. Tune in to WCAI weekdays, 6am to 9am, for Morning Edition and 4pm to 6pm for All Things Considered.
