6 FIRST PERSON Growig Up at Browser Books By Catie Damo Browser Books, the literary ladmark o Fillmore ear the corer of Sacrameto, was origially located oe block orth, beside the Clay Theatre, i a buildig that had also bee a head shop ad a recordig studio for Carlos Sataa s first album, called simply Sataa ad released i How my dad, Stephe Damo, came to ow Browser i 1978 is, as he ackowledges, a curious ad icredible story. The bookstore s first iteratio was called Edge of the City Books, opeed i 1972 by a youg couple who the sold it to a elderly ma, who i tur sold it to a middleaged woma i 1976, who reamed it Browser Books. Two years later, my dad was hired as assistat maager. Whe the ower started to talk about sellig the place, he left to work at aother bookshop. Oe day a ma came i who was marvelously wealthy from oil moey ad asked if my dad kew ayoe who could sell him a bookstore, which he evisioed as a place to sped his retiremet. My dad suggested his previous employer, ad together they marched over ad persuaded Browser s ower to sell. Withi a year, the ma decided the life of a bookstore ower was ot for him ad agreed to sell it to my dad for $20,000, to be paid over a year. The bill of sale was draw up o a thi slip of paper from the Brow Bag, the local statioers. Two moths later, my dad owed the store. The bookstore moved a block south to 2195 Fillmore i 1989, six moths before I was bor. CHAD SLIFE, pricipal of Cobb Elemetary School for the past three years By Fra Morelad Johs A log with the usual playgroud oise at Cobb Elemetary School, at 2725 Califoria Street ear Scott, it s possible to hear somethig else: the roar of Tiger pride. That s because the studets at Cobb, Tigers all, are justifiably proud. The vibrat brick red school, which uderwet a $7 millio moderizatio a few years ago, ow boasts a ew library/media ceter, a redesiged play yard complete with a garde ad outdoor classroom spaces, ad coutless other upgrades. But most importat have bee a reewed spirit ad focus durig the three years the school has bee led by pricipal Chad Slife. Each year erollmet ad achievemet have goe up, Slife says. I have people ig me out of the blue who wat to teach at our school. Established i 1865 as the Emerso School, it was reamed i 1978 for Dr. William L. Cobb, who became Sa Fracisco s first Africa America pricipal i 1947 ad for 16 years led the school ow amed for him. Cobb has 160 studets from pre-k to grade 5. Slife kows every oe. Ask me about ay kid, he says. I ca tell you about him or her, ad I will spell the ame right. At Cobb, we kow our kids. Slife did his udergraduate work at the Uiversity of Souther Califoria, the etered Teach for America, a atioal program that places college graduates iterested i teachig at low-icome schools for two years. After earig a master s degree i educatio at Sa Fracisco State ad teachig i schools here ad i Los Ageles, he came to the eighborhood as foudig assistat pricipal of Gateway Middle School at Geary ad Scott. Three years ago, he moved to Cobb. My focus was o fixig the culture, he says. The biggest thig was a shift toward buildig commuity. Parets are becomig more ivolved i the school. While paret voluteers have log worked i the classrooms ad helped out with special evets ad fudraisig, the first PTA was established this year. The school also gets a boost from its commuity parters. Nagata Dace i Japatow parters with the school for its K-5 arts erichmet. Ad Presidio Pizza Co., earby o Divisadero, is the sposor of Cobb s Studet of the Week certificates, which come with a free slice of pizza. Cobb also parters with earby Drew School, Tow School ad Gateway High School, which provide older buddies for Cobb studets. O a Saturday at the ed of April, a program called Rebuildig Together brought parets, teachers ad Salesforce staffers together to reovate the school s garde ad add a ew mural. Slife attributes the studets improved achievemet levels still low, but better every year to the school s urturig eviromet, which is desiged to brig out the itellectual best i each studet while hoorig idividuality through sog, dace, drama, istrumetal music ad visual art. Cobb also offers a free after school program, ru by the Buchaa YMCA, from the ed of the school day util 6 p.m. The there are the popular Tiger Tickets. From all agles, it is a way to ecourage idividual growth ad commuity spirit. Cobb studets are mostly from the Wester Additio, ad most are childre of color. Some of their parets ad gradparets studied i these same classrooms. Now that has begu to chage. We re seeig more racial diversity i our lower grades, Slife says. Statistics from the past two years show sigificatly more parets choosig Cobb as a optio for their childre. This is huge, Slife says. It s a huge testamet to our work ad the reputatio of our school. It s tough jugglig a full day s activities o a urba campus ope from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. while keepig track of 160 studets whose ames you kow ad ca spell. I m just ot the kid of pricipal who ca close the door ad get other thigs doe, Slife says. It takes a toll, ad Slife recetly told his staff he will ot be returig ext year. It s just time, he says. This school ca really drai you. He otes that his three years are the logest teure of the six most recet pricipals at Cobb. This is just ot a sustaiable positio for oe perso, he says, with o assistat pricipal. Slife is hopig there will be a positio for him ext year at school district headquarters. Sice I tured 5, I have bee at school, he says, with 17 years as a studet ad almost that may as a teacher ad admiistrator. I ve ever ot bee at school. I m ready to have a office job for awhile. Charter schools are callig, but I d rather stay with public educatio, he says. Slife is a fitess buff who teaches cyclig classes, is a certified persoal traier. He has ru marathos or half-marathos i 22 states ad plas to get to the rest. He s clearly ivested i educatio for the log haul, too. At Cobb s campus, he ackowledges, They re sad I m ot returig ext year. It s bee a huge grievig process. But he is hopeful about the future. The ew pricipal will be walkig ito a ew situatio, he says. That ight, Robert Stewart played some icredibly hard R&B-iflected jazz that was icediary. I 1999, Rasselas moved to 1534 Fillmore Street, creatig a ew music veue out of a old fish market, with a secod bar, stage ad dace floor i a very large back room. That was eight years before the massive Yoshi s complex opeed two blocks south o Fillmore to great fafare. While Yoshi s for a few years attracted the biggest ad best atioally ad iteratioally reowed players, Rasselas stayed true to its missio of showcasig some of the best R&B, soul ad jazz musicias the Bay Area had to offer ad that was, ad is, a lot. Addig to the mix was the itimate ad elegat Sheba Piao Louge, which opeed at 1419 Fillmore Street i While Sheba ad Rasselas were across the street from each other, ad both served authetic Ethiopia food ad offered live music, each maaged to exude a distictly differet feel, ad made the costellatio of clubs i what was touted as the rebor Fillmore Jazz District oe of the hippest sectios for music ad culture i Sa Fracisco. Sheba quickly became the go-to place for the Yoshi s crew whe their shifts eded ad they wated to hag out, decompress ad hear music. Rasselas closed i 2013 ad Yoshi s shuttered two years later, after a brief ad ill-fated attempt to cotiue as The Additio. Sheba is still goig strog. It remais a relaxed ad casual space featurig live music every ight from some of the area s best players, doig what they do out of love for the music they play. Thursdays are reserved for Lati Breeze, a iteratioal esemble that plays a variety of musical styles icludig salsa, cha-cha ad meregue. They lay dow Lati rhythms that attract musicias icludig the legedary percussioist Louis Romero, who played i his ative New York with the likes of Hector Lavoe, Celia Cruz, Rube Blades, with seve-time Grammy omiated Joh Satos sittig i o cogas. That gives music fas some idicatio of the caliber of musicias who frequet Sheba Piao Louge. Ad recetly, Wiley Coyotes was see ad heard playig some real roots reggae music, which is fairly rare, especially i such a small ad cozy veue. Sadly, may of these veues o loger grace our urba ladscape, or have bee recofigured for other uses, i some cases makig them urecogizable. As Sa Fracisco bega to recover from the earthquake of 1906, a umber of smaller eighborhood theaters cropped up while the larger, grader veues alog Market Street were beig rebuilt. Although it was still the early days of movig pictures, these eighborhood theaters were specifically desiged for this ew form of etertaimet, departig from the more audiece-egaged vaudeville houses ad ickelodeos. Petri poits out that the twi eighborhood theaters of the New Missio ad the New Fillmore, both desiged i 1916 by the Reid Brothers architects, were capable of seatig 2,000 patros. The New Fillmore, which was located at 1325 Fillmore, made its debut i October 1917, showig Faie Ward s O the Level. While the New Missio has bee recetly reicarated as the Alamo Drafthouse, the New Fillmore was lost i the 1950s. With the icreasig popularity of movig pictures, a cluster of theaters accumulated ear Fillmore ad Geary, icludig two veues that debuted just after the 1906 earthquake. First came the Uptow, which was origially called the Alcazar, the the Republic, ad briefly the Sutter, at the southwest corer of Sutter at Steier.
