4 4 SCHANACHIE BOOKBUZZ Bonnie Easton STEAK SHOOT FUN FOR ALL! Pat Dowd Our September Steak Shoot welcomed back Mary Terese Hurley with a big round of applause and many warm greetings as she and her daughters came to try their luck at this entertaining game. It was great to have them with us. Leading off the evening were Ed Bopp, Barb Bopp, Sue Obojski, and Susan Cooper as Set 1 winners. Right behind them were Bonnie Ayres, Linda Walsh, Betsy Grinches, and Pam Splittorf. Set 3 gave us three repeat winners in Linda Walsh, Betsy Grinches and Ed Bopp, while Jean Marie Sabo, Annette O Brien and Patty Hurley claimed their steaks too. The final set before intermission made winners of Les Beck, Mae Keenan, Les Beck again, Susan Cooper again, and Mike Keenan. Intermission gave everyone time to have some refreshments and get their raffle tickets. Our monthly cash drawing and the big Holiday Cash drawing in November continue to attract everyone present to purchase their tickets. Soon it was time to resume play as Pam Splittorf happily won her second package of steaks and was soon followed by Martha Beck, Mary McCluskey, and Betsy Grinches again. The final regular set was won by Stephen Pyle, Martha Beck again, Sue Obojski again, and Bonnie Ayres, again. Lots of multiple winners tonight! On to the Bonus rounds where Jeff Wade happily took home three packages six steaks, and Mary McCluskey was the winner of two packages of large boneless, skinless chicken breasts. Our final winner of the night was Judy Sullivan who won the $68 cash raffle! Our final countdown to the end of this season s Steak Shoot games is on Thursday, October 20 at 7:30 p.m. and the week before Thanksgiving Thursday, November 17 will bring this season to an end. All raffle tickets sold this season will be in the final Holiday Cash raffle drawing in November. Winners, however, must be present to win, so be sure to join us for this great night! Some great new reads are out this fall. Two hot titles from popular authors are Wonder: A Novel by bestselling author Emma Donoghue and The Trespasser by award-winning author of the Murder Squad mysteries, Tana French. Donoghue (Frog Music and The Room) gives us a psychological thriller set in the 1850s about English nurse, Lib Wright and an eleven-year-old Irish girl, Anna O Donnell. The girl is reported to have not taken any nourishment for four months. Tension builds as Lib works to expose her as a fake, but is thwarted by superstitions and the religious faith of the town. French offers her sixth Dublin Murder Squad mystery. In The Trespasser, detectives Antoinette Conway and Steve Moran attempt to solve the murder of a young woman and follow up with the case through a dangerous world of gangs and corrupt cops, but all the clues point to Conway s new boyfriend, Rory Fallon. Ashes of Fiery Weather is the debut novel by Kathleen Donohue. She tells the story of six generations of women in a family of Irish firefighters. Patrick moves his family to New York in 1862 and becomes a founding member of the first fire department of Brooklyn. The story follows their descendants through the decades to the tragic events of September 11, Another promising family saga is Girl in the Castle: A Novel by Santa Montefiore, the first book in a proposed trilogy. The main players are Kitty Deverill, an Anglo-Irish aristocrat, and her Catholic friend, Bridie Doyle, the daughter of the family s cook. When the troubles of the 1920s tear their home apart, Kitty flees to London for a life of privilege and Bridie immigrates to America to find a job as a servant, but neither of them can break the bond to their homeland. Pub trivia will be on Saturday, November p.m.
5 NOVEMBER PADRAIC PEARSE BOOK DISCUSSION The next Padraic Pearse Book Discussion will be held Friday, November 18 at 7:15 p.m. We will discuss Little Red Chairs: A Novel by Edna O Brien. O Brien is the critically acclaimed Irish author of novels, plays and short stories. Her latest novel, which she published at the age of 85, is set in a small Irish village. Fidelma McBride is married to an older man and yearns for a child. An Eastern European charismatic healer and sex therapist appears in town. Taken in by his charm, Fidelma begins an affair with him in hopes of becoming pregnant. Dr. Vladimir Dragon is accused of being a war criminal from the Siege of Sarajevo in 1990s Serbia. She flees to London when her marriage breaks up and Vlad is put on trial at The Hague. O Brien dares to speculate on the true nature of evil for a haunting conclusion. Please join us for a provocative discussion of this modern classic. Upcoming schedule: January 20: Rare Objects: A Novel by Kathleen Tessaro February 17: Rosemary: The Hidden Kennedy Daughter by Kate Clifford Larson For more information about the Padraic Pearse Center, visit Reviving a Tradition Pinochle tournament open to all Some years ago the resident pinochle league sponsored an annual tournament. The tournament is designed to teach the game to those interested in learning how to play and foster a competition to determine an overall Club Champion. It was discontinued because organizers retired. This year s event will be scheduled for Sunday, January 29, 2017 at 2 p.m. in the Phil Walsh Cabaret Room. Tickets will go on sale for $10 per person in January. Tickets paid in advance will receive a discount. The fee will include a pinochle tournament with pizza and prizes. A cash bar will be available in the Pub. Watch the December and January issues of the Schanachie for aditional details. All levels of players with and without experience are encouraged to participate. Experienced players will be on hand to help coach those who need to learn the game or sharpen their skills. Sunday, January 29 is one week before the Super Bowl and does not conflict with televised football games. Consequently, there is nothing better to do on a winter afternoon than to join your fellow club members and share a match, pizza, drinks, and fellowship. As details are released in December, please be sure to make your reservation. iacespinochle@gmail.com.
