2 curiosity and fun-driven personality to attain that capability. 悼 Dr. Jim Carnahan is a special member of the CCC Chorus. Actually, he is a non-singing member--the spouse of a chorus member. Yet that only makes him more special because he has contributed in many significant ways. In the late 1970s when the CCC was a nascent and flagging organization, the Chorus was very smallsometimes only two or three singers in each vocal section. The family of each singer became an important supporting group of all the chorus activities. In those days, singers took turns to host the weekly rehearsals took place at each house. The host family not only provided piano and refreshments, it provided babysitting of ALL the children of the Chorus, I remember my children looked forward to the rehearsal because it was their party time too. The Carnahan house was their favorite because the sweets after rehearsal was excellent, and Mr. Carnahan played soccer with them. More often than not, Jim was the only non- Chinese speaking person in the adult group. When the party got warmed up and we had a heated discussion, we tended to converse 80% in Chinese and 20% in English, yet he mingled in the party with no language barrier. With a handful Chinese vocabulary, he was able to link the few Chinese words he just heard and comprehended, grasp the conversation topic, and engage actively in our conversation. His interlocutory capacity was impressive and a delight to watch. It takes an open-mind, genuine The Carnahans - Scott, Bryan, Eileen and Jim were all active in the CCC activities. They were ubiquitous in music performance, language class, PTA, fundraising, and various community services. With his talent and skills, Jim was the photographer, later the videographer. And eventually he became the history archive librarian of our group. Eileen and Jim always gave a significant annual donation to the Chorus. When some passionate CCC members dreamed up a building project to set up the Chinese America School of Heritage (CASH) in 2000s, the couple made a significant pledge as well. Jim by his nature generously provided his service to the project planning, mowed grass and other chores to maintain the landscape. When we think of the now defunct CASH Project, we cannot help but think of Jim as a model citizen in our community. It s been over decades and we somehow took for granted the Carnahan lake house at Schroon Lake as our summer camp. Lodging, barbecuing, hiking and canoeing by the lake house became an annual highlight of the Chorus, the Carnahan hospitality was the Chorus s feature that always attracts new members. My wife and I have the privilege to have known the Carnahans for nearly forty years. Through my day job, he was a fellow chemist who with his erudite knowledge and skill, was always inspiring and helpful. For my home maintenance, he is a kind handyman for advice and assistance on electric wiring and plumbing. On the Adirondack hiking trails, he is my guide of local geology and trees. In our numerous joy trips to different parts of the world, there was never a dull moment when Jim is around. With humor and wits, he shared with us his deep appreciation, knowledge of arts, history and culture. He is a rare combination of Renaissance Man and handyman. [Ting-Ken Nyeu 鈕廷肯, May 2018] 1

3 康哲博士是華社合唱團的榮譽團員. 其實他從不在團裏唱歌, 連中國話都不會說. 但他是個好丈夫, 凡是他太太汪璋有興趣的事, 他都積極参與. 比其他任何家眷都熱心. 七十年代合唱團成立伊始, 沒有練習場所, 也沒有鋼琴. 所以練習都在有鋼琴的團員家輪流舉行. 每個聲部都衹有两三個人, 練習時還離不開呦呦小兒. 練唱是全家總動員. 團員們練歌時, 家眷嗑瓜子看顧小孩. 等着吃點心. 逢到週末練唱時, 我們家小孩倆最喜歡去康家, 因為汪阿姨的點心好吃. Mr.Carnahan 會帶孩子們踢足球. 老康的中文字彙有限. 追求太太到手後就不大上進了. 但在以中文為主的社交圈裏, 他仍能悠哉遊哉. 我們有時談天說地, 說到激昂處用上八成中文. 老康憑那两成英文不但能猜凖我們談話內容, 還能適時插進對話. 初識的新朋友還真以為他是中國通. 這四十年下來, 老友們對他的友善, 聴力和機智, 始終佩服得五體投地. 康家伉儷和康懷德, 康懷磊两位公子, 一家四口参加華社的所有活動, 舉凡中文學校, 少年音樂表演, 家長會, 義賣樂捐, 無役不從. 憑他的攝影技術造詣, 他很自然被公認是華社與合唱團的影像檔案館主. 合唱團經費短絀, 康家夫婦經年慷慨解囊, 好讓我們弦歌不斷. 兩千年前後, 一群熱心公益的華社老社友籌辦華美學堂, 老康夫婦領銜出錢出力, 他不僅参與建地規劃, 還到現場割草整地. 華美學堂後來沒有實現, 但老康的熱心公益, 堪稱為民楷模. 最近二十年來, 康家在思空湖邊的別墅, 成了合團唱年度避暑憩所. 我們在那裏品酒烤肉, 堪星賞月, 遊山泛舟. 康府的盛宴, 幾乎成了合唱團最有號召力的特色. 我們夫婦有幸與康家賢伉儷長年交往近四十年. 我們在工作上曾經是同事, 老康學識淵博, 給我許多啟發和無私的幫助. 在家事上, 他是我的水電工程顧問. 我們在遊山玩水時, 面對崇山叢林, 他把地質和植被的形成史說得趣味橫生. 我們多次結伴周遊世界各地, 衹要有他在, 憑他對歷史的熟悉和對文物的鑑賞力, 隨時説古道今, 旅途中絕少冷場. 結識這樣文理兼備的仁人君子, 是我夫婦的福份. 特予銘記. 詩是歌的內容 歌是詩的昇華 情動於衷, 而形於言, 言之不足, 故嗟歎之, 嗟歎之不足, 故詠歌之 Acknowledgement 詩經 大序 謝 CCC Chorus is especially grateful to Dr. Yiping Wu ( 伍貽平教授 ) for his many years of coaching and tutoring. 4 歲月如歌 七十年代初, 一群來到紐約州首府地區讀書成家立業的華人, 為了延續文化承傳, 成立了華社中文學校 緊接著, 為了彌補異地思鄉的缺憾, 於一九七六年成立了華社合唱團 創始之初只是幾個好友家庭的聚會, 四十多年過去, 華社各個團體中, 除中文學校, 合唱團是歷史最悠久, 活動最多, 也最熱鬧的團體 這麼多年來, 除暑假之外, 每兩週一次的排練, 一直是弦歌不輟 我們學過一百二十多首中外歌曲, 代表華社出席過無數次節慶典禮, 走進許多養老院, 做唱歌的義工 我們也肩負介紹中華文化的使命, 積極參加社區文化交流活動 一九八九年, 我們和美東各地華人合唱團聯合在紐約市林肯中心舉行了一場盛大的聯合音樂會 二零一一年的 Mohawk Hudson Art Festival, 在 Schenectady Proctors Theater 與首府地區八個合唱團體一起上台 從此 Tri-City 的音樂界也知曉此地有個具規模的華人合唱團體 二零一六年五月, 我們舉行了一次四十週年紀念演唱會, 給過去如歌的歲月添加了新的一章 合唱團剛成立時, 十幾個團員沒有一個是音樂專業的, 也缺乏發音的基本訓練 伴奏和指揮都是半路出家, 歌譜來源也寥寥可數 隨著音樂教育的普及, 我們的歌唱水準也逐漸提高 合唱團團員們來自奧本尼地區的各行各業, 有大學教授, 工程師, 經理, 研究員, 藥劑師, 政府職員等 現在, 我們有了高水準的 常任 專業鋼琴伴奏, 有教授級的指揮來指導我們 同時, 五湖四海的華人世界裡也逐漸出現新一代專注於獨具中國韻味合唱歌曲的作曲家, 我們的曲目也變得豐富而精緻 在歌聲不斷的歲月裡, 我們用歌聲結交心靈之友, 在音樂的領域裡更上層樓 不知不覺中, 來自家鄉的音韻, 譜成新鄉的曲調, 一點一 滴豐富了我們的精神生活 團員們雖有聚散 離合, 老團員也己蒼顏白髮, 但是我們始終有 年青的朋友加入 既有志於以歌會友, 就無 分老少地域, 只要歌聲響起, 我們就樂以忘憂 有意參加者請與團長楊丹聯繫 Our Songs, Our Stories The Chinese Community Center Chorus (CCC Chorus) was founded in 1976 under the auspices of Chinese Community Center, a non-profit organization devoted to promoting and supporting the appreciation of Chinese cultural heritage in the Capital District. Our chorus was initiated by a few amateur singers with a desire for individual musical enrichment and community cultural activities. It is the longest performing group in CCC. We have represented CCC and brought musical enjoyment at charity functions, corporate events and international festivals. We have performed in many venues throughout the area, including a 1989 joint concert at Lincoln Center s Avery Fisher Hall with other Chinese choruses in the northeast states, and a 2011 MoHu (Mohawk Hudson Art Festival) performance at Schenectady s Proctors Theater with eight other Community Choruses in the Capital District. The CCC Chorus performs a wide variety of music including Chinese classics, traditional as well as popular pieces. In our 40 years together, we have accumulated a music library of more than one hundred selections, with numerous folk songs from the many regions of China. Our chorus is open to the public, and no formal training is necessary to sing with us--simply a desire to learn vocal arts in Chinese music, and a dedication to community service. 8 PROGRAM NOTES 大江東去 ( 蘇軾詞念奴嬌赤壁懷古 ) The Great River Flows East 大江東去, 浪淘盡, 千古風流人物 故壘西邊, 人道是, 三國周郎赤壁 亂石崩雲, 驚濤裂岸, 捲起千堆雪 ; 江山如畫, 一時多少豪傑 遙想公瑾當年, 小喬初嫁了, 雄姿英發, 羽扇綸巾, 談笑間, 檣櫓灰飛煙滅 故國神遊, 多情應笑我, 早生華髪 人生如夢, 一尊還酹江月 The great gushing Yangtze with piling waves flows towards the east, Away it carries gallant souls of the remote bygone days. The ancient fort on the west is said to be The Crimson Cliff, where Zhou of the Three Kingdoms era Wei's navy defeated. Stones were hurled into the sky indiscriminatingly, Mighty waves must have crushed onto shores hurling high snow-like foam. The river and mountains today's landscapes paint, Where once there were many courageous and heroic men. Picture Zhou in his prime, Dressed in plain clothes together with his young bride, gallant he must have been. Topped with a silk crest, he held in his hand a fan of feathers, With humor he helped see to That the masts and sculls of Wei's navy go up in smoke and ashes turn into. My mind wanders in the history vested hither, My sentimentality no doubt has caused my early grey. Life is a dream, Allow me to drink to the river, the moon and its reflection. Poet Su Shi ( ) is one of the most important literati in the classical Chinese literature. In Musing on the Crimson Cliff, he was inspired by the naval battle of the Three Kingdoms era (208 AD) which took place by the Cliff. The poem is so popular just about every young student across the continent can recite it through thousands of years to this day. Qin Zhu wrote a cavatina for Musing on the Crimson Cliff (1922). It was a major pioneering work of adaption of western music style to a classical Chinese poem. The four-part chorus work was arranged by Qu Xixian in 1960s, and it has gradually become a standard selection in the choral repertoire. 蘇軾這首被譽為千古絕唱的名作, 在宋詞中流傳最廣, 影響最大, 也是豪放詞最傑出的代表 它寫於北宋神宗元豐五年 (1082), 是蘇軾貶居黃州時遊赤壁磯時所作 這首詞對於一度盛行纏綿悱惻之風的北宋詞壇具有振聾發聵的作用 此詞感慨古今, 雄渾蒼涼, 大氣磅礴 把人們帶入江山如畫, 奇偉雄壯的景色, 和深邃無比的歷史沉思中, 喚起對人生的無限感慨和思索 曲作者青主 ( ) 原名廖尚果, 早年曾赴德國學習法律, 同时兼學鋼琴 作曲理論等音樂課程 編曲者瞿希賢 ( ) 畢業於聖約翰大學, 上海國立音樂專科學校作曲系 她的作品題材寬廣, 風格多樣, 具有鮮明的民族特色和藝術獨創性 城南送別 Farewell at South Gate 長亭外, 古道邊, 芳草碧連天, 問君此去幾時來, 來時莫徘徊 7

The evening breeze brushing the willow, The flute sound lingering, The setting sun beyond hills and mountains. At the verge of heaven, At the four corners of the earth, My bosom friends are half gone and no longer seen. With a gourdful of turbid wine, Enjoy the last moment of pleasure, The parting dream turning cold this very night. The song was written originally by an American folk song composer John Ordway in 1868 as Dreaming of Home and Mother. Later a Japanese musician, Kyuukei Inudou ( 犬童球溪 ), translated and rewrote the lyrics into Japanese as A Traveller s Sorrow. While studying in Japan in early 1900s, Poet Li Shutong adapted the melody with Chinese Lyrics. The Chinese version is now considered a major repertoire for high school commencement, and new compilation by contemporary composers are often made for movie or chorus. 枉凝眉電視劇 [ 紅樓夢 ] 插曲 Vain Longing 一個是閬苑仙葩, 一個是美玉無瑕 若說沒奇緣, 今生偏又遇著他 若說有奇緣, 如何心事終虛化? 一個枉自嗟呀, 一個空勞牽掛 一個是水中月, 一個是鏡中花 想眼中能有多少淚珠兒, 怎禁得秋流到冬, 春流到夏! One is an immortal flower of fairyland, The other fair flawless jade, And were it not predestined, Why should they meet again in this existence? Yet, if predestined, Why does their love come to nothing? Can they flow on from autumn till winter, From spring till summer? 枉凝眉 是 紅樓夢 書中第五回十四支判曲中第三首的名字 這首曲子寫紅樓夢的男女主角賈寶玉和林黛玉的愛情理想最終破滅 曲名 枉凝眉 的意思是悲愁有何用, 也即曲中所說的 枉自嗟呀 黛玉最終淚盡而亡, 而寶玉則是出家為僧, 兩個人的緣分最後是離散, 對黛玉, 寶玉來說, 自然是枉凝眉 再別康橋 Farewell to Cambridge 輕輕的我走了, 正如我輕輕的來 ; 我輕輕的招手, 作別西天的雲彩 8

Chen Shimei, a married man with children, wins the first place in the highest imperial examination and is hence married to the princess, the emperor s sister. When his wife Qin Xianglian finds him, he refuses to recognize her and their children. He even sends an assassin to kill them. But the assassin kills himself instead, due to an awakening of conscience. Qin Xianglian sues him for betrayal and attempted murder, and wins the case on the verdict of Bao Zheng. an official famous for uprightness and integrity.
