1 Vancouver Recital Society If you re going to be transported by music you may as well travel first class. 13/14

2 I am thrilled to invite you to join the Vancouver Recital Society on the musical trip of the season. From Abduraimov to Zukerman we offer you an embarrassment of riches on your musical journey with us this season. Whether you re a seasoned enthusiast of the VRS, or a novice when it comes to the recital format, there is something for everyone. All you require is a sense of adventure and a thirst for discovery. We invite you to enjoy some of the world s most outstanding musicians and musical groups. Some are household names in the classical music realm: Yo-Yo Ma, Murray Perahia, Pinchas Zukerman and Yefim Bronfman. Some are extraordinary musical talents, waiting to be discovered by you: such as Avi Avital and Iestyn Davies. Additionally, we introduce the new Peak Performances at the Playhouse Series where you can hear the great Canadian baritone Gerald Finley with pianist Julius Drake perform Schubert s epic Winterreise, cellist Daniel Müller-Schott together for the first time with Simon Trpčeski, and a stunning solo recital from the brilliant violinist Christian Tetzlaff. Imagine these artists in the intimate surroundings of the Vancouver Playhouse. Whether you embark upon the whole roundtrip experience by purchasing a Super Classic Subscription, or whether you hop on and off with the subscription package you choose, you can count on these musicians for a deluxe experience. And finally, the icing on the cake: echoing the Vancouver Chamber Music Festival, in March we bring some old festival favourite musicians to perform three intense evenings of Brahms. The Jerusalem Quartet will be joined by pianist Inon Barnatan, clarinetist Sharon Kam, and violist Hsin-Yun Huang. Take a deep breath and read on! Leila Getz, C.M., O.B.C., D.F.A. Yo-Yo Ma cello & Kathryn Stott piano Sponsored by Sunday, March 16, :00 pm The Orpheum As one of the most treasured artists of our time, Yo-Yo Ma s name is synonymous with musical excellence and profound passion. Ma s multifaceted career and enduring popularity testifiy to his continual search for new ways to connect with audiences, and to his personal desire for artistic growth and renewal. He returns to the Orpheum stage with his collaborator of 25 years, pianist Kathryn Stott. An extraordinarily interesting and incisive interpreter in her own right, Ms. Stott is widely recognised as one of Britain s most versatile and imaginative musicians. Ma and Stott share a natural rapport for making masterful musical connections that stimulates the imagination and stirs the soul. Stott s and Ma s joint presence on stage offered the thousand some listeners an unaccustomed opportunity to set aside oft times distracting star parameters and simply witness shared music-making. Exemplary concert energy like this is as seductive as it is uncommon. BOSTON MUSICAL INTELLIGENCER PROGRAM TBA

5 Pinchas Zukerman & Yefim Bronfman violin / viola piano Sunday, April 6, :00 pm Chan Centre for the Performing Arts SPONSORED BY THE MARTHA LOU HENLEY CHARITABLE FOUNDATION In association with The Chan Endowment Fund of the University of British Columbia Pinchas Zukerman has remained a phenomenon in the world of music for over four decades. His musical genius, prodigious technique and unwavering artistic standards are a marvel. With a prolific history of glorious music making, the name Pinchas Zukerman is equally respected as violinist, violist, conductor, pedagogue and chamber musician. Pianist Yefim Bronfman has a long and celebrated history with the VRS having performed in our very first season and numerous times since. This season, Bronfman returns as a seasoned keyboard virtuoso whose commanding technique and exceptional lyrical gifts have distinguished him as one of the greatest pianists alive today (The New York Times). This is a rare opportunity to hear these two master musicians together. The balance between instruments was meticulously shaded from the first moments... Bronfman s piano was an attentive but never pushy partner, providing a genial, dappled undercurrent for Zukerman s insouciant flights.
