3 Executive Summary Passion for Music Unites with Global Medical Responsibility Since its inaugural concert in 2007, the World Doctors Orchestra (WDO) has combined the pleasure of great music with charity. Two to three times a year, physicians from around the world exchange their white coats for evening dress and perform a benefit concert in support of charities that address the healthcare needs of the underprivileged. This Annual Report outlines the activities of the WDO and its two sister organizations, World Doctors Orchestra USA and Friends of World Doctors Orchestra, during the year In it, you are invited to explore the organization s great artistic and philanthropic activities in Vienna, Berlin, and Bonn, and to meet the charities that benefited from WDO s efforts in those cities. We also are pleased to present WDO s financial picture for 2013, including an overview of our development plans - plans that necessarily include you. And for those of you who are curious about WDO s future, we will provide a preview of 2014 s sessions in Japan and Chile in addition to information about future events. On behalf of the over 800 physicians from almost 50 nations who form WDO, thank you for your support of this worthwhile organization. We hope that you enjoy reading about our achievements in 2013 as much as we did making them happen. Sincerely, The Leadership Team of the World Doctors Orchestra Please visit our websites: 1

4 FOUNDER AND CONDUCTOR Dear Musicians and Friends of the World Doctors Orchestra: The year 2013 was particularly exciting on the music side and particularly rewarding on the charity side. The concert sessions in Vienna as well as in Bonn and Berlin were both very special, because of the spiritual character in the Stephansdom together with the Vienna Boys Choir, and the innovative program concept spanning five centuries with soloists leading counter tenor Jochen Kowalski and jazz singer and pianist Donna Brown. The concerts were under the patronage of the Federal President of Austria Dr. Heinz Fischer and the First Lady of Daniela Schadt, respectively, a great honor and a demonstration of strong political support for WDO. For the first time, WDO participated by invitation in an international music festival, the Beethovenfest Bonn, and the concerts were very well received by enthusiastic audiences. WDO has continued its mission by donating the proceeds of the concerts in 2013 (about 30,000 Euro) to selected healthcare charities: Dentists for Africa e.v., Förderkreis für krebskranke Kinder und Jugendliche Bonn e.v., Gesellschaft der Freunde des Deutschen Herzzentrums Berlin e.v., and Institut für Krebsforschung der Medizinischen Universität Wien. In addition to financial support, WDO also contributes by enhancing the international public awareness of these medical organizations. Congratulations to you all because of your generous contributions of time, talent, and resources, WDO has become an important force for positive change. Your continued support is critical to WDO s ability to serve the communities that need us. In this 2013 Orchestra Report, we will review our exciting projects and offer a glimpse into what we have planned as we move forward. Since we began our work in 2007, WDO has played a total of 25 concerts (including concerts for patients and healthcare staff at their hospital facilities) featuring 38 works of 25 composers (including six contemporary), jazz arrangements, 24 soloists, and five choruses. Within only six years, WDO has grown to over 800 musicians from almost 50 countries worldwide. The combination of fine music, a sense of global medical responsibility, and the commitment of our sponsors has been the basis of the founding and subsequent development into the leading international doctors orchestra, both in terms of the quality of the concerts and our ability to support notable medical aid projects. WDO is proud to serve as global medical ambassador. To accomplish its charitable mission through its concerts of the magnitude of their scope, WDO requires substantial managerial and financial support. To address WDO s infrastructure requirements and as the basis for concert planning and fostering its mission, it regularly utilizes professional management services and includes three interrelated organizations: WDO led by Dr. Stefan Willich, Dr. Anne Berghöfer, and Alexandra Gruber, it is the master organization which manages orchestra operations and determines, together with local organizers of concerts, the music programs and charities which WDO will support. WDO USA Dr. Jonathan Lass serves as President for this subsidiary organization which focuses on fundraising and development in North America. Leah Lass MBA serves as its Financial Officer. Friends of WDO President Dr. Karl E. Bergmann heads this subsidiary organization dedicated to seeking private support from around the world to benefit WDO. The 2014 concerts will be in Japan on March 21 and 23 at the initiative of Drs. Naoko Takebe and Kenji Ishii, presenting Brahms Double Concerto for Violin and Cello, Beethoven s Symphony No. 7, and works by Japanese composers, and in Chile on November 22 and 23 at the initiative of Dr. Patricia Zangger, presenting Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2, Mendelssohn s Symphony No. 4 (the Italian), and works by South American composers. Subsequent concerts are planned in Dresden and Berlin on April 24 and 25, 2015 on the initiative of Dr. Ulrike Schatz, and in Seattle and Vancouver on June 7 and 8, 2015 on the initiative of Drs. David Frank and Mark Lupin. We are currently exploring the possibility of future sessions in Barbados and Trinidad, Romania, Switzerland and Italy, San Francisco, Spain, Israel, Munich, Boston and New York, Hamburg, Copenhagen, Paris, St. Petersburg, Thailand, and Australia. We hope that you share our excitement for what is to come. In addition to attending these events, you and your relatives, friends, and colleagues are encouraged to become members of Friends of WDO and/or to become contributors to WDO USA ( We sincerely appreciate your initiative in developing the family of WDO organizations as presented in this report, organizing sessions, and securing funding. And we are very grateful for your dedication, musicianship, and friendship resulting in the support of important international healthcare charities. On a final note, we are delighted and grateful that Maestro Zubin Mehta has recently accepted the invitation to serve as honorary member of the WDO Board of Trustees on the basis of our humanitarian cause. Yours, Stefan Willich 2

5 WORLD DOCTORS ORCHESTRA MANAGEMENT The end of 2013 marked the first ten months of my work for the World Doctors Orchestra. Founded only six years ago, the orchestra has grown steadily since. Indeed it has been a privilege working for the WDO and helping to make an institution thrive that combines a deep passion for music with tangible social responsibility in such a unique way. In the first five years of its existence, concerts took the WDO to different corners of the world, starting in Berlin and ranging from Cleveland, by way of Yerevan, Taipei, Washington DC, Beijing, Shanghai, Cape Town, Johannesburg, to Essen, while returning regularly to Berlin. In 2013, the WDO s 11th and 12th concert sessions consisted of three very well-received concerts. The first took place in the unique atmosphere of St. Stephen s cathedral in Vienna. In September, the WDO played in the Beethovenhalle Bonn by invitation of the reputable Beethoven Fest Bonn, while the WDO s fifth appearance in Berlin took the orchestra to the prestigious Philharmonie. In 2014, the WDO will perform in Iwaki-city and Tokyo in March, and in Santiago de Chile and Valparaíso in November. I am already grateful for the efforts of the competent and hard working local organizing teams who I am sure will make these concert sessions just as successful and enjoyable as our past ones. The efforts of the WDO are overseen by its Musical Director. The orchestra s main management tasks for 2013 comprised the coordination and organization of the charitable concert projects collaborating with local organizers, process control, public relations activities, marketing measures, design and graphic work (brochures, ads, CD/DVD), website updates, ticketing, distribution of musical scores, as well as the tour management on site. And: the WDO has gone viral! We now have a YouTube channel and a new Facebook page. Looking ahead, the WDO will continue its effort to raise the necessary funds for a sustainable, long-term secured financial future that will maximize our support of our charitable mission. We are fortunate to partner with WDO USA and Friends of World Doctors Orchestra. We will focus on spreading the WDO s mission even further around the world, including areas that are still under-represented, and, on providing substantial financial support to our partner charities, thus making sure that medical aid reaches those most in need. Steering, maintaining, and expanding a ship like this with its more than 800 passengers brings immense satisfaction along with challenges. That it should be possible at all is owed to many supporting hands. I would like to express my sincere thanks to all who supported the WDO ship in 2013 be it materially or immaterially: To all local organizers, in particular to Carmen Meissner and Dr. Ulrich Kolck for their tremendous contribution to bring the orchestra s concert sessions to life; to Theresa Konrad-Karsten and Herbert Konrad and their team of K&K, Kunst & Kultur ohne Grenzen; to the oustanding guest soloists and choirs of our concerts; to all of our sponsors and donors, in particular to B.Braun Melsungen AG, Sonic Healthcare, and the Aventis Foundation; to all volunteers for workshops, recordings, and coordination on site to Dr. Stilla Frede, Priv.-Doz. Dr. Martin Schlaud, Prof. Dr. Matthias Bertsch, Dr. Philip Dodd; to Prof. Dr. Karl E. Bergmann, Katharina Stober, and all professional Friends of the WDO; to Jonathan Lass, MD, Sheyna Nicole Burt, and Leah Lass, MBA, from WDO USA; and, to our First Lady Daniela Schadt, and the Federal President of Austria, Dr. Heinz Fischer, for their patronage of the concert sessions Last but not least, I would like to say a cordial Dankeschön to all musicians in the concert sessions. It is them who convey with their music all that makes it worth working for. With my best wishes and my sincere thanks for your dedication and support for the WDO in the past, present, and future. Sincerely, Alexandra Gruber Executive Director WDO 3

6 WORLD DOCTORS ORCHESTRA USA Plans are well underway for benefit concerts in Seattle and Vancouver in 2015 and San Francisco in Charities are now being selected for these concerts with planning to yield maximum benefit. Since its founding in 2011, World Doctors Orchestra USA has made tremendous progress as a sister organization to the German-based organization, World Doctors Orchestra ( The emphasis of WDO USA has been to support WDO s charitable efforts through its concerts in North America. WDO s efforts to date have raised over 200,000 to support our philanthropic mission from the concerts that have been performed around the world. American participation has been strong in support of the charitable mission of WDO, including its most recent concerts in 2013 in Vienna, Bonn, and Berlin and this year in Japan (Tokyo, Iwaki City) and Chile (Santiago de Chile, and Valparaiso). WDO USA has taken steps to expand its mission with the formation of a Development Committee, with each member making multi-year commitments to support WDO USA. The Committee will seek to advance the WDO s charitable mission in the United States by securing interest from individuals, companies, and foundations that are inspired by WDO s advancement of global health with its concerts in the United States raising funds for the local charity. The goal will be to establish an endowment for the orchestra along with multiyear sponsorships in order to realize the maximum impact of ticket sales and local sponsorship to benefit charity in this country. The orchestra has had numerous musical triumphs in the United States, including performances of Brahms First Symphony at Severance Hall in Cleveland in 2009 and Mahler s Resurrection Symphony at Strathmore Hall in Bethesda in 2011 on the occasion of a memorial tribute to the 9-11 victims. But its greatest triumphs have been supporting patients without insurance cared for at the Free Clinic in Cleveland or helping an HIV AIDS patient in Washington DC to get medicine to stay healthy. 7 FRIENDS OF WORLD DOCTORS ORCHESTRA Oftentimes we do not understand the mother tongue of our chair neighbor, but music does not need a translator its message is universal! Many physicians from all over the world joined the WDO to share their passion for music, and to spread its belief that health care is a basic human right, and a precondition for human development. They donate all proceeds of their extraordinary performances in worldwide benefit concerts to non-profit medical aid organizations. For this, the participating physicians donate their own expenses for their leave, travel and accommodation. Preparing and performing a great variety of classical and modern music at a very high level requires outstanding skills, diligent individual preparation, and several days of rehearsal. It usually culminates in two concerts at different cities of the same country. The rental of large musical instruments that cannot be brought along by plane, the rental of rehearsal rooms, and concert halls always the best ones in a country the transfers by bus, the engagement of outstanding soloists and choirs, the professional coaching of section rehearsals, many logistic challenges, and a minimum of administrative support addup to significant financial costs. The availability of sufficient financial resources decides about how many projects can be realized so far this means two to three per year. For one project, 30,000-80,000 are needed. One important source of money is the generous sponsorship for single projects by individuals, companies, and public institutions. However this is quite varied. Clearly, the vision and the projects of the WDO need sustainable support. Therefore, the association Friends of World Doctors Orchestra was founded in June 2012 as an additional tool to support the orchestra. Friends three objectives are to: create a stable financial basis for the WDO, enable more projects and concerts, and provide the maximum support to WDO s designated charities. The Friends of WDO operates independently. It cooperates with WDO and with WDO USA. Membership is not limited to physicians or musicians; it is open to anyone interested in supporting our mission to benefit many non-profit medical aid organizations through WDO s concerts. Members receive newsletters, CDs or DVDs of all concerts, reduced prices on tickets, opportunities to meet the conductor and the musicians, and other benefits. The Friends of WDO is particularly open to ideas and critique to advance its efforts. To date, Friends of WDO has raised approximately 10,000. It hopes to attract many more members. A notable non-material contribution in 2013 was to win over the patronage of Daniela Schadt, First Lady of the Federal Republic of, for the concerts in Bonn and Berlin, including an eloquent introduction of the WDO to the audience of the Berlin Philharmonic Hall. 8 CHARITY PROJECTS The following charities were supported by the WDO with the Vienna preconcert and concert INSTITUTE OF CANCER RESEARCH AT THE MEDICAL UNIVERSITY VIENNA Learning to Understand, Striving to Cure Curing cancer is one of the most urgent and important health issues, a major challenge in modern medicine. Despite the constant increase in the incidence of cancer, which is mostly due to the greater lifespan of human beings, mortality is decreasing and the percentage of patients surviving cancer has been rising rapidly. In recent years, a dramatic reorganization of systemic cancer therapy started to emerge, shifting from the strategy of treating a particular type and stage of cancer by a certain treatment scheme to individualized and personalized treatment for each patient, based on the underlying cancerspecific genetic Prof. Dr. Maria Sibilia, Head alterations. The Institute of Cancer Research at the Medical University Vienna, originally founded as Austrian Cancer Research Institute in 1953, has four principal research areas: Chemical Safety and Cancer Prevention, Cellular and Molecular Tumorbiology, Tumor Progression and Metastasis, and Applied and Experimental Oncology. Its projects reflect all the major fields of modern cancer research with the aims to either prevent cancer or at least improve the treatment and the chance for a cure for patients suffering from this devastating disease. Based on its comprehensive translational mission, the Institute was incorporated in 2004 into the Department of Medicine I of the Medical University of Vienna, thus allowing direct access to tumor material and clinical studies. This prioritization process recently culminated in the establishment of the Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC) Vienna. Accordingly, the Institute, embedded within the CCC, functions as a national reference center for questions regarding risk factors, biomarkers, and therapy strategies in oncology. Moreover, the researchers of the Institute are strongly involved in both teaching medical students and forstering awareness of the general public regarding cancer and the fight against this devastating disease. 9 CHARITY PROJECTS CHILDREN S CANCER RESEARCH INSTITUTE VIENNA The Children s Cancer Research Institute (CCRI) advances diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment strategies for children and adolescents suffering from cancer by conducting basic laboratory, theoretical, and clinical research in the specific features of different pediatric cancers. This combined approach is implemented by the multidisciplinary team of researchers and clinicians with the aim to make the most innovative treatment available to young cancer patients. Improving treatment options and cure rates of children and adolescents with cancer remains a future challenge for the CCRI, which, without having any government support, is primarily financed by private donations and competitive public funding. Detailed dialogues and co-operations with potent partners in politics and the pharmaceutical industry are necessary to ensure future developments for the benefit of children and adolescents with cancer in Europe. This goal is both an academic and societal endeavor. In 1986, the association, which is now called St. Anna Kinderkrebsforschung e.v. and acts as the supporting organization for the CCRI, was founded by parents of children who were treated for cancer at the St. Anna Children s Hospital. The CCRI became operational in 1988, after the association had raised more than 2,3 Mio in private donations for the conversion of the then-empty St. Anna loft into research laboratories and small offices. Now, 25 years later, the CCRI is an internationally renowned institute. What started with a few dedicated people has become a multidisciplinary team of 12 different research groups. Further information: ZWI PEREZ CHAJEZ SCHOOL, VIENNA From its opening in 1919, the Zwi Perez Chajes School has had an excellent reputation. Founded by an initiative of the Head Rabbi of the Jewish Community of Vienna, the school was co-educational unlike other state schools at the time; female students made up one third of the overall student population and the school employed female teachers. 45 years after being closed during World War II, the school was re-founded in September 1984 on Castellezgasse by the Jewish Community of Vienna. In summer 2008, it moved to a new campus in the Simon-Wiesenthal-Gasse. Today, over 400 students are enrolled from nursery school to graduation. The mission of the accredited private school Zwi Perez Chajes School is to teach Judaism as well as to provide general education, knowledge, and skills according to the Austrian curriculum. The students are taught at the highest levels of pedagogy according to their individual needs in order to best prepare them for the future and open the doors for higher education. Over 80% of graduates continue on to university studies both in Vienna and internationally, and 60% of these complete their studies successfully. Further information: 7

10 CHARITY PROJECTS The following charities were supported by the WDO with the Bonn and Berlin concerts DENTISTS FOR AFRICA The Non Governmental Organization Dentists for Africa has set its goals to provide qualified dental care for destitute people in Africa who otherwise would have no access to it. This will be implemented by the setting up of dental practices and the organization of humanitarian operations. As a non-profit association, it promotes the training and further education of local students of dentistry, oral health officers, dental technicians, and medical engineers by means of material and personnel support. Beyond this education regarding dental care, screenings of dental hygiene, and subsequent treatment among schoolchildren and the less-favored and poor rural population are organized. These aims are achieved by the deployment of dental care personnel from Africa and Europe. Since 1999, twelve dental practices have been installed and equipped which are operated by Kenyan Oral Health Officers who in turn are supported by German dentists. Another important project is the placement of sponsorships for Kenyan orphans who will be provided with school enrolment and subsequently, with an apprenticeship ensuring them positive future work prospects in their home country. Also important is the development and operation of a village for widows in Nyabondo, West Kenya, near Lake Victoria. Women who were affected by the AIDS epidemic have organized themselves there and run selfhelp projects to successfully master their daily life together and independently. Board member Dr. med. dent. Peter Dierck succeeded in attracting jazz singer Donna Brown and Kammersänger Jochen Kowalski as soloists with the WDO in Further information: 8

11 CHARITY PROJECTS 30 YEARS: PARENT SUPPORT GROUP FOR CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS WITH CANCER BONN Cure rates for children with cancer are nowadays much better than 30 years ago (when the organization was founded). In fact, with modern medicine, up to 80% of all children with cancer have a good chance of being cured. But children with cancer still have to go through long and extremely intensive therapy, which often leaves physical and psychological scars they and their entire families need our help. The Förderkreis supports patients and families during and after the time of treatment: by financing additional staff in the hospital (social workers, child care workers, teachers, kitchen personnel, and at times nurses and doctors), by financing and running a parent house close to the hospital, where parents can stay during inpatient treatment of their children, by offering many different activities which bring fun and relaxation into the clinic day, by organizing meetings to enable communication among patients and their families, by supporting the transition into normal life. Further information: THE ASSOCIATION OF THE FRIENDS OF THE GERMAN HEART CENTRE BERLIN The Association of the Friends of the German Heart Centre Berlin was founded in February 1988, two years after the opening of the Heart Centre itself. It now has more than 600 members. It supported the creation of the first training center on the European continent for perfusionists. Beyond this, the association has provided cash assistance for the expenses of assistant physicians of the Heart Centre when studying abroad (especially in the USA), helped with startup funding and personal support for scientific projects, provided financing for printing costs for outstanding doctoral dissertations and postdoctoral habilitation treatises and, especially, supported children with coronary diseases in countries where treatment is not possible and where funding is insufficient. Finally, it has supported the efforts of Prof. Hetzer s campaign to promote the willingness to donate organs. Further information: 9

12 FUNDRAISING / DEVELOPMENT PLAN / SUPPORTING THE IDEA FUNDRAISING Financing Tool to Increase Global Access to Healthcare The challenges of charitable development are not unique to the World Doctors Orchestra. Some orchestras are supported by their municipal, state, or federal governments, along with ticket sales. Others are financially self-supported through ticket sales and philanthropy. WDO has the relatively unique additional burden of raising funds not simply to support the performance of great music, but, more importantly, to raise awareness of and support for the tremendous work being performed by healthcare charities around the world. The management of the World Doctors Orchestra is based in Berlin, but WDO s outreach is global. Accordingly, the orchestra cannot rely on local support or activities like the sale of discounted tickets for an onetime event for its concerts to be financially successful. Then again, as WDO s core musicians come from almost fifty countries around the world, the sphere of influence is wide and serves as an important source of diverse talent and potential financial support. These professional physicians, connected by the power of music to effect change, have provided a significant foundation of financial stability for WDO by virtue of their enormous contributions of time, talent, and financial donations. The healthcare charities supported by WDO s concerts accomplish very important work. WDO is committed to collect as many donations as possible to support their mission. For it to be effective, however, WDO requires the support of individuals and corporate partners to help defray its reasonable operational costs. WDO is working to rally the support of new and existing stakeholders who share its commitment to making healthcare accessible. This includes the need to broaden WDO s pool of contributors: healthcare providers beyond the WDO members, pharmaceutical and healthcare device companies, foundations, individuals, and media outlets. WDO s development plan will encompass every level of support from individual donations and legacy gifts, to forprofit corporate support, to foundation grants, to in-kind donations. With these goals in mind, WDO USA, under the presidency of Dr. Jonathan Lass, was founded in the United States in 2011, and the association Friends of World Doctors Orchestra was founded in in 2012 by Prof. Dr. Karl E. Bergmann. Development success will pay dividends, as it will enable WDO even more to bring music and financial support not only to those well-developed communities who have the means to support major symphonic concerts, but also to under-served populations. The orchestra s performance in the South African township of Elandsdoorn 2012 is one positive example. DEVELOPMENT PLAN Meaningful Support for Important Healthcare Charities and a Sustainable Future for WDO Combining the Pleasure of Fine Music (And Financial Stewardship!) with Global Medical Responsibility The Development Team of the World Doctors Orchestra is focused on helping WDO to bring its charitable mission to fruition in a way that allows WDO to be a sustainable organization long into the future. The Team has its gaze focused on stewardship the responsible raising and management of financial resources so that the WDO can do the maximum amount of good. This focus includes the design and implementation of a purposeful approach to harnessing and leveraging the influence of WDO s participants and artistic reputation. Broadly speaking, the Team proposes that WDO s prime directive should be meaningful financial support of WDO s health charity partners accomplished by achieving the following: 1. WDO will have a financial infrastructure that covers its costs related to operations, general marketing, and public relations, and a capitalization fund to cover strategic initiatives and risks in reserve. 2. WDO will have fundraising and marketing campaigns for WDO generally and sessions specifically, nuanced to reflect the realities of our current geographic centers in Europe, North America, and Asia, as well as future centers in South America, Australia, and Africa. 3. WDO, as part of its strategic planning process, will address its administrative infrastructure issues defining the tasks of the various members of the leadership team, and its various volunteer committees, as well as making plans to increase WDO s paid staff in its various geographic centers. 4. WDO will make its performances a means to an end supporting healthcare charities should be the preemptive purpose of all of our efforts. Making the Most of Your Dedication to WDO The Development Team has yet to finish its analysis and fundraising plans for the short, mid, and long term. Once the plan is ready, details about it will be forwarded to all of the stakeholders of the WDO. The Team expects that this plan will mark a coordinated effort by WDO e.v., WDO Inc., and Friends of WDO e.v. to ensure that your donation of time, talent, and treasure to this organization will be used in the most effective and responsible way. Musically yours, Sheyna Burt, Esq. The Law Office of Sheyna Nicole Burt 10

The WDO is very grateful for the loyalty of its generous supporters. SONIC HEALTHCARE Modern and Efficient Laboratory Diagnostics Support Clinical Decisions. Sonic Healthcare focuses exclusively on medical diagnostics and follows the basic principle of Medical Leadership. Excellent medical and analytical quality, comprehensive laboratory medical care, outstanding service, and professional logistics are the guarantors of the successful work of all the laboratories of the German Sonic Healthcare group. The company offers a full spectrum from the fields of laboratory medicine, microbiology, human genetics, transfusion medicine, cytology, and hygiene. In order to meet very specific needs, doctors and hospitals have automatic access to all centers of competence of the Sonic laboratory network which today includes the members Bioscientia (Ingelheim), Labor 28 (Berlin), Dr. von Froreich Bioscientia (Hamburg), Labor Lademannbogen (Hamburg), Labor Dr. Müller (Oldenburg), Labor Dr. Steinberg (Soest), Labdiagnostik group (Frankfurt) and the Schottdorf group (Augsburg). Around 4,600 qualified and motivated employees, the continuous investment in the laboratories of the group, medical training, and professional development ensure Sonic Healthcare a place at the forefront of medicine, science and technological development. Inspired by the idea that many doctors use their musical skills for a good cause and support different aid projects, Sonic has decided to support the World Doctors Orchestra. Twice a year, a number of doctors change their white coats for evening dress, and give an orchestral concert, whose proceeds are donated to medical charities. Impressed by these ideals, Sonic is thrilled by the passion, the skill, and the time which these musicians dedicate to this project. Further information: AVENTIS FOUNDATION Concerts Signal Global Medical Responsibility The Aventis Foundation is a charitable, non-profit foundation with its headquarters in. The foundation s mission is to promote art and culture as well as science, research and education. In this context, the foundation especially supports long-term, structural projects launched by distinguished cultural institutions. These projects have in common that they develop new concepts with regard to content, artistic expression, or organizational pattern. The unusual approach of the World Doctors Orchestra has convinced the board of the Aventis Foundation from the very beginning of our cooperation and support in The orchestra manages successfully to combine the joy of music with a global medical responsibility. In fact, all doctors who support the orchestra are professionally educated musicians. As such, they understand to inspire their audience by presenting superior performances of renowned musical works at the world s most famous concert halls. In addition, the musicians bear all their personal costs for the project, such as travel expenses and accommodation, so that the revenue earned entirely benefit the medical projects. The Aventis Foundation found this to be a highly eligible idea, which could serve as a role model for other development projects and thus should receive additional support and financial backing. 16 PRIVATE DONATIONS In addition to the fact that the members of the concerts bear all their own costs for their journey and accommodation, their financial support increased with higher donations than in the previous years. The musicians and their circle of acquaintances support enabled the WDO to continue to serve the communities of the world. The following list reflects all private donations received from January 1, 2013 until December 31, 2013 for WDO and WDO USA, and contains all constantly contributing members of the Friends of WDO: Tore Høiland Aarrestad, Oslo, Norway Naoki Aikawa, Tokyo, Japan Rolf Albert, Überlingen, Fred Albrecht, Grand Island, NY, USA Florin Amzica, Pierrefonds, QC, Canada Joel Ang, Washington DC, USA Susanne Arbeiter, Berlin, Heinz Arnold, Tübingen, Michael Arthurs, North Bay, ON, Canada Arisa Asano, Tokyo, Japan Ruth Ayling, Plymouth, United Kingdom Roland Baur, Berlin, Julia M. 21 VIENNA SESSION In June 2013, 60 physicians from 15 nations performed WDO s 11th charity concert in the unique atmosphere of Vienna s St. Stephen s Cathedral. The orchestra presented Schubert s Unfinished Symphony and, together with the world-renowned Vienna Boys Choir and Chorus Viennensis, his Mass No. 6 in E flat major. The soloists of the evening were Gernot Heinrich (tenor), Stefan Bleiberschnig (tenor), and Friedrich Molsberger (bass). The proceeds were dedicated to the maintenance of St. Stephen s Cathedral, to the Children s Cancer Research Institute (preconcert), and to the Institute of Cancer Research at the Medical University Vienna. From all over the world, the skilled doctor-musicians traveled to Austria for three days of rehearsal, a preconcert in the Jewish cultural center of the Zwi Perez Chajez school, and for the festive concert in the well-filled cathedral. THE VIENNA BOYS CHOIR Artistic Director: Gerald Wirth The quintessential boys choir has a long tradition: Boys have been singing at Vienna s Imperial Chapel since In 1498, Maximilian I (HRR) moved his court to Vienna, lock, stock, and choir. Over the centuries, the Viennese Court attracted musicians like Mozart, Salieri, and Bruckner; Joseph Haydn, Michael Haydn, and Franz Schubert were themselves choristers. The Chapel Imperial always travelled with the Emperor. Today, touring is part of the chorister s education. Since 1926, the Vienna Boys Choir has undertaken close to 1000 tours in over 100 different countries. There are currently 100 choristers between the ages of nine and fourteen, divided into four touring choirs. They give around 300 concerts each year, attended by almost half a million spectators around the world. Together with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vienna State Opera Chorus, the boys provide the music for the Sunday Mass in the Imperial Chapel, as they have done since The Vienna Boys Choir can also be seen (and heard!) in the choir s own concert hall, Muth. Two new films by Curt Faudon give a deep insight into the boys art: Songs for Mary (2013) is a biography of the Virgin Mary in 21 motets and songs; Bridging the Gap the Power of Singing will be released on DVD in More information: CONCERT PROGRAM Franz Schubert ( ) Unfinished Symphony Nr. 7 in B minor, D. 759 Allegro moderato Andante con moto Franz Schubert ( ) Mass No. 6 in E flat major, D. 950 Kyrie Gloria Credo Sanctus Benedictus Agnus Dei World Doctors Orchestra Conductor: Stefan Willich Soloists: Gernot Heinrich, Stefan Bleiberschnig, Friedrich Molsberger Choirs: Vienna Boys Choir, Chorus Viennensis 19

22 BONN / BERLIN SESSION At the invitation of the Beethovenfest Bonn, about 100 physicians from almost 20 nations performed a charity concert in the Beethovenhalle Bonn in September The extraordinary program ranged from Beethoven s Coriolan Ouverture and Richard Strauss Death and Transfiguration to Baroque arias and jazz transcriptions. Soloists were the leading counter tenor Jochen Kowalski and the American jazz singer and pianist Donna Brown. The program was also presented the next day at the Berlin Philharmonic Hall, marking WDO s 5th concert in s capital. The proceeds of the orchestra s 12th concert session were donated to Dentists for Africa e.v., the Parent Support Group for Children and Adolescents with Cancer Bonn e.v., and the Association of the Friends of the German Heart Centre Berlin e.v. 23 BONN / BERLIN SESSION JOCHEN KOWALSKI is one of the most versatile altos of our time. A member of the ensemble of Berlin s Komische Oper since 1983, he has sung several title roles, amongst others in different stagings by Harry Kupfer. He has also appeared at virtually every leading opera house in and has been invited to the State Opera and to the Wiener Volksoper, the Opéra national de Paris, the Royal Opera Covent Garden, as well as to the Metropolitan Opera, where he sang the Orlofsky in Strauss s Die Fledermaus and Oberon in Britten s A Midsummer Night s Dream. His repertoire is unusually wide for a male alto: not only has he appeared in the major Baroque operas by Monteverdi, Handel and Gluck but also as the astrologer in Rimsky-Korsakov s Der Goldene Hahn and in Olga Neuwirth s Hommage à Klaus Nomi. In addition to recitals given in, Jochen Kowalski is a welcomed guest at international festivals like the Salzburg Festival and at concert venues in music cities such as Moscow, St. Petersburg, Barcelona, Madrid, Paris, Tokio and London. In addition, Jochen Kowalski has sung swing music from the 1930s and 1940s in recent years and has developed the Stars go Swing program with the Capital Dance Orchestra. Many TV appearances and several CD and DVD recordings have made him well-known to a wide audience. 26 OPERATION WDO How Can One Imagine the Operation WDO? A Short Look Behind the Curtain in Three Steps Step 1 Destination and Dates Decisions about destination and dates are taken in due consideration of availability of the physician/musicians, suggestions by orchestra members or charity projects, invitations from sponsors or institutions, and the strength of operative and financial support of partners in the vicinity of the proposed venue. Currently, WDO is able to run 2-3 concert sessions per year with an average set-up time of 1 ½ - 2 years. Step 2 Logistics, Funding, Programming Arrangements The concert venue, rehearsal space, and accommodations are identified and booked, necessary sponsorships are acquired, and WDO s Musical Director Stefan Willich decides on the concert program in cooperation with local artists. Subsequently invitations are sent out to the pool of WDO musicians and Stefan Willich choses his fellow musicians, resulting in an ensemble of sixty to one hundred twenty members. In cooperation with the local organizer team, the orchestra management sets about all further organizational and content related work including PR/marketing, ticketing, rehearsal logistics, instrument rentals, and the distribution of sheet music several months prior to the concert session. Speech of Prof. Gerald Schubert, a descendant of Franz Schubert Music is a passion and helps us reconnecting with ourselves! With WDO colleagues, we share the same enthusiasm. We might speak different language, share different culture, but music brings us all together! Vincent Poirier emergency room doctor & violist My mother was an opera singer. I spent the first few years of my life sitting on her lap as she played the piano and sang solos and arias from the great Italian Operas. My father, being a family doctor, taught me through his day to day actions that there is no greater way to serve humanity than to help people from all races and religions equally, and with humility. Michael Arthurs emergency room doctor & violinist 24

27 Woodwinds section rehearsal Vienna Step 3 The Gathering Three to four days before the first concert, the entire orchestra cast meets for its very first group rehearsal in the host city. In a series of group rehearsals and small ensemble sessions coached by professional musicians, timing, tempo, intensity, and overall impression are practiced. When possible, the general rehearsal serves as a free preconcert for patients in a local hospital. Finally, the big day arrives and years of preparation and hard work culminate in the session s concerts. What music and medicine have in common? The fundamental is perfect technique, precision, and a lot of skill and knowledge all of which can only be achieved by endless hours of practice and with underlying talent. But neither can truly LIVE and speak to the people without passion/compassion, emotion/empathy. 28 MUSICIAN MEDICINE Medical Care for Professional Musicians - A Developing Interest for the World Doctors Orchestra Many members of the World Doctors Orchestra individually provide specialist healthcare to professional musicians as well as other professionals working in the performing arts. In addition, other members are involved in research in this specialist medical field. This is something that would be expected given the unique perspective that members of the Orchestra would have in providing healthcare to this patient group. Since the foundation of the Orchestra in 2007, a number of members have expressed the view that the orchestra should support initiatives that assist professional musicians in accessing expert specialist medical care in the treatment of their occupational illnesses or injuries, and that the Orchestra should take advantage of it s unique position as a group of professionals that can contribute to the development of new, evidence based treatment approaches. are available on the website. In 2012, the Orchestra held a seminar for members on therapeutic and research challenges in treating occupational related injuries for musicians. This seminar took place during rehearsals for the Berlin concert project that year, and future similar seminars are planned with local physicians during concert projects around the world. Broader future plans for the Orchestra in this area of work include developing partnerships in education and treatment with relevant not-for-profit groups to develop access and best practice. The Orchestra has the potential to bring together medical professionals working in this relatively new and developing specialist area of medical care, with clear potential to facilitate professional development and patient access and education. Linking with relevant professional groups around the world would seem the next step. In 2012, the Orchestra carried out a review of relevant information sources and representative professional groups, and has developed a specific webpage on the WDO website with links to these resources. This online resource is updated regularly, and the membership is welcome to suggest further appropriate links. 30 WDO ALL OVER THE WORLD The World Doctors Orchestra currently consists of 820 physicians: 361 women (44%), and 459 men (56%) from 46 countries. They are all medical professionals and, at the same time, are enthusiastic and active musicians, many of them possessing a professional musical background. About 60 to 100 members participate in each concert, depending on the availability of the members and the instruments needed for each concert. Because there are so many participants, each important instrument is represented. Remarkably, 79 of the members are proficient in two or more instruments. 237 of the 820 members had had professional music training and experience, and the other members are excellent amateur musicians who engage in regular musical activity. 131 play in professional orchestras in their free time, whereas others play regularly in amateur orchestras and chamber music ensembles. A great variety of medical specialties are represented. Internists, general practitioners, and pediatricians take the lead, and there is a wide variety of specialization in diagnostic and therapeutic areas, as well as in pharmacology. The participants of the concerts bear the costs of their journey and accommodation, collectively amounting to approx. 100,000 in total for each concert. supported charities concert venues musicians in WDO (countries capitals) 28
