4 Trinity s Woodwind and Jazz Woodwind syllabuses The Woodwind and Jazz Woodwind syllabuses rom Trinity College London oer the choice and lexibility to allow candidates to lay to their strengths, enabling them to gain recognition or their own unique skills as erormers. Reertoire lists or classical lute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxohone and recorder cover a wide range o styles and genres. Initial exams are available or clarinet and lute, and both instruments have a set o graded reertoire books. Audio recordings o each iece in the books are available on graded CDs. The reertoire lists or jazz woodwind oer lenty o oortunities or imrovisation, enabling teachers and candidates to exlore dierent ways into this imortant jazz technique. Further reertoire choices or classical and jazz clarinet, lute and saxohone are available in the oular Musical Moments and Mosaics books. Technical work exercises cover tone and hrasing, articulation and inger technique. These exercises are available in scales, areggios and exercises books, which rovide valuable teaching resources as well as excellent exam suort. Recognition Trinity exams are externally regulated in the UK and are recognised by education authorities in many countries around the world. Grades 6 8 are also eligible or UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) oints or those alying to UK colleges and universities. Clarinet exams Trinity s Clarinet exams have been designed to develo conident, creative and skilled musicians through a structured learning ramework, which nurtures develoment and evaluates a musician s rogress at every level. Trinity s graded exams are guided by a core hilosohy o lexibility, lacing the needs o individual candidates at the heart o the exam. Why a Trinity Clarinet exam? Choice and lexibility candidates choose three ieces rom the reertoire lists and may oer their own comosition in lace o one listed iece At Initial to Grade 5, candidates choose two suorting tests rom our otions: sight reading, aural, imrovisation and musical knowledge. 5 How is the exam structured? Trinity Clarinet exams are designed to give layers the reedom and choice to demonstrate the ull extent o their musicianshi. Wide-ranging reertoire lists are rovided, with ew limitations laced on rogramme selection. Technical work includes the otion to erorm exercises or orchestral extracts as an alternative to scales and areggios, and there is lexibility o choice within the suorting tests at all grades. Pieces Candidates lay three ieces selected rom two grous: two accomanied and one unaccomanied. Candidates may substitute one iece or their own comosition i they wish. This art o the exam is designed to rovide the right balance o lexibility and structure, enabling candidates to demonstrate their own musical ersonalities while requiring them to resent a balanced rogramme. Technical work In the exam, candidates can choose to erorm either scales and areggios, or exercises (Grades 1 5)/orchestral extracts (Grades 6 8). This is designed to enable candidates to demonstrate their technical ability in a way that lays to their strengths as musicians. Scales & areggios A selection o scales is set or each grade, structured rogressively to develo technique and awareness o keys. Candidates reare the scales and areggios set or the grade, and lay a selection in the exam as requested by the examiner. Exercises Candidates reare three exercises, o which two are layed in the exam. One is chosen by the candidate and one by the examiner. The exercises are designed to demonstrate tone and hrasing, articulation and inger technique. Orchestral extracts At Grades 6 8 candidates reare three orchestral extracts, two o which are erormed in the exam. One is chosen by the candidate and one by the examiner. These are selected to demonstrate the same techniques as or the exercises. Suorting tests At Initial to Grade 5, candidates choose two suorting tests rom our otions: sight reading, aural, imrovisation and musical knowledge. At Grades 6 8, sight reading is comulsory, and candidates choose rom imrovisation or aural or their second test. This lexibility is designed to give candidates choice in how they demonstrate their broader musical skills, while recognising that sight reading is an imortant skill at the higher grades. Sight reading The sight reading test is designed to be musically intuitive to enable candidates to demonstrate their sight reading skills to the best o their ability. Candidates erorm a short, accessible musical extract ater a brie eriod o rearation, at a level aroximately two grades lower than the exam being taken. Aural The aural test assesses candidates skills in musical ercetion and understanding through careully graded questions about a single musical extract layed at the iano by the examiner. At most grades candidates are asked to describe various eatures o the extract such as dynamics, articulation, texture and style. No singing is required. Imrovisation This test assesses candidates ability to resond luently and creatively to a musical stimulus, which can be stylistic, motivic or harmonic at the candidate s choice. Musical knowledge The musical knowledge section o the exam is based exclusively uon the reertoire layed by the candidate in the ieces section. It is delivered conversationally by the examiner, who draws out what the student knows through questions such as oint out the most interesting eatures o this iece. 4

19 Contributors Trinity works with a range o contributors when creating syllabuses and accomanying books and audio. A anel o exerts makes sure that the chosen ieces match the criteria and are engaging and varied. For this syllabus the anel was led by Chris Walters. Chris Walters graduated rom the Guildhall School o Music & Drama in 2002 and has since ursued a varied career including orchestral and solo erormance, teaching, and writing about music and music education. He has erormed with the BBC Scottish Symhony Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Britten Sinonia. He has toured Euroe with the Euroean Union Youth Orchestra, worked with Cae Town Oera in Kenya, and erormed the Mozart Clarinet Concerto with Southbank Sinonia as art o the Anghiari Festival in Italy. His writing has aeared in ublications including Music Teacher, Classical Music and the Guardian. So that the Trinity syllabuses eature the right ieces at the right level and suort our edagogical values, Trinity commissions comosers such as Kimee Cleaton. Kimee Cleaton is a singer, musician, teacher, conductor and comoser. Initially sel-taught, she later went on to study at Brighton Institute o Modern Music. She began writing music at the age o eight, rimarily or lute and iano, and later branched out to musical theatre, choral works and urther instrumental music in her teens. She currently conducts two choirs, a male voice choir and a mixed-voice community choir, and teaches in and around Shroshire, both rivately and with the Shroshire Music Service. She erorms regularly with local choirs and orchestras as a sorano soloist, and as a solo artist or secial events, and she is an organist at her local arish church. Trinity also works with exerts to roduce the accomanying recordings. For this syllabus we artnered with Chris Walters, Joanne Rozario, and Paul Saunders. Joanne Rozario studied clarinet and saxohone at the Royal Academy o Music in London. In her inal year she joined the Hong Kong Philharmonic as Assistant Princial Clarinet. From Asia, she moved to South Arica where she was Princial Clarinet with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra in Durban. When she was oered the ost o Princial Clarinet with Northern Ballet Orchestra, Joanne returned to England. She now tours extensively with the comany while erorming solo and chamber music and examining or Trinity College London. Paul Saunders has enjoyed a varied career combining erorming with teaching and is now an established West End musician, doubling on lute, clarinet and saxohone. He currently holds the clarinet chair on the West End roduction o Wicked and has layed or countless other shows. The Royal Liverool Philharmonic and Welsh National Oera are among the orchestras he has erormed with. Most recently, Paul has been aointed Visiting Multi-Instrumental Consultant at Birmingham Conservatoire o Music. 18

Musical Moments Clarinet Our Musical Moments series is a set o rogressive clarinet reertoire books eaturing a wide range o musical genres and including accomanied ieces. Five books are available, with reertoire careully selected to ensure technical diiculty is steed rogressively rom beginner at Book 1, to intermediate standard at Book 5. Mosaics Clarinet A range o solo ieces or clarinet by James Rae is available in our Mosaics series. Two books are available: Book 1 (beginner to Grade 5 standard) contains 65 solo ieces and Book 2 (Grade 6 to Grade 8 standard) contains 42 solo ieces. The collection o clarinet ieces was written with the idea o entertaining the layer and listener with a great variety o styles. Each iece is intended to stand on its own as a short concert iece rather than a study, and the ieces can be layed together as a concert erormance suite.
