P a u l s C h a n c e l C h o i r V o l u m e 1 1, I s s u e 8 CHOIR NOTES Choir Happenings Thanks to the choir for their efforts in presenting musical programs at the Leacock Retirement Lodge and Leacock Care Centre. Our music was appreciated at both locations. The Broadway Show Tunes Sing-a-long dinner was a remarkable success due in part to the efforts of choir members Susan Walma, Blair Bailey, Rick Brown, Lynda Lewis, John Jefferies and Jim Barnett. Their organizational, musical, technical and performing leadership was impressive. Thanks as well to the rest of the crew who facilitated this program and of course to the hospitality crew for the dinner. April 16th heralds the beginning of the 60th Annual Orillia Kiwanis Music Festival with most of the activities taking place at St. Paul s. Plan on attending some of the sessions where you will see remarkable Orillia and area residents display their talent. You will not be disappointed! Fast approaching is the choir presentation of Missa Gaia on Earth Day, Sunday, April 22nd at 7:30 pm. Special rehearsals are scheduled to ensure that this will be a great success. They are: Easter Monday, April 2nd from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm in either the Sanctuary or Banquet Hall Sunday, April 8th from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm in the Sanctuary Sunday, April 15th from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm (with instruments) in the Sanctuary Earth Day, Sunday, April 22nd from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm in the Sanctuary and arrive for a 6:30 pm call time for the evening performance which begins at 7:30 pm.

3 Wednesday, April 4th Lady Bird In Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig reveals herself to be a bold new cinematic voice with her directorial debut, excavating both the humor and pathos in the turbulent bond between a mother and her teenage daughter. opinionated and strong-willed mom (Laurie Metcalf), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird's father (Tracy Letts) loses his job. Set in Sacramento, California in 2002, amidst a rapidly shifting American economic landscape, Lady Bird is an affecting look at the relationships that shape us, the beliefs that define us, and the unmatched beauty of a place called home. Wednesday, April 18th Christine "Lady Bird" McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) fights against but is exactly like her wildly loving, deeply OSB is hosting the Canadian Band Association Ontario Brass Band Weekend! If you are an audience member, it will be a concert to remember! Please join the Orillia Silver Band and the combined Canadian Band Association Brass Band at their concert at 2:00 pm on Sunday April 29th at the St. Paul's Centre to hear this amazing massed band. Tickets are available at the door for just $20.00.

4 But it s been 31 years since they ve seen one another. What if she doesn t remember him? Or even worse, what if she does? Will his fantasies and movietale endings come crashing down to real life or will love win out? At times hilarious and witty, while at other times heartbreaking, Rope's End leads us through twists and turns and ends up in a surprising and memorable place. The play features standout performances by Ian Munday and Marnie Hayes. Ian will be familiar to Mariposa Arts theatre audiences who have seen him in several shows including Spamalot and A Few Good Men. Rope s End marks Marnie s first appearance with MAT. Rope s End is a bittersweet story about unrequited love and second chances, with undertones of Cyrano de Bergerac thrown in. Toby, a middle-aged, down-on -his-luck movie critic reflects on all the wrong turns his life has taken and ponders his very existence. Then he gets up the courage to reconnect with his first crush, Marissa, a girl he met when they both were teenagers at summer camp. Don't wait! Their previous shows Chicago and All My Sons had mostly sold out performances! Adults tickets are $25.00 and are available at the Orillia Opera House. Not Recommended for ages under 18.

5 April 14th - Verdi s Luisa Miller James Levine and Plácido Domingo add yet another chapter to their legendary Met collaboration with this rarely performed Verdi gem, a heart-wrenching tragedy of fatherly love. Sonya Yoncheva sings the title role opposite Piotr Beczała in the first Met performances of the opera in more than ten years. April 28th - Massenet s Cendrillon Glorious, raved the New York Times when Joyce DiDonato sang the title role of Cendrillon at the Royal Opera in Her performance was thoroughly enchanting. Now, for the first time ever, Massenet s sumptuous take on the Cinderella story comes to the Met, with DiDonato starring in the title role. She is paired with mezzosoprano Alice Coote in the trouser role of Prince Charming, Kathleen Kim as the Fairy Godmother, and Stephanie Blythe as the imperious Madame de la Haltière. Bertrand de Billy conducts Laurent Pelly s imaginative storybook production. Screenings take place at the Orillia Galaxy theatre at 12:55pm.

10 Choral Gold Vocal Workshop, 2018 Save the Date! Saturday April 28, 2018 at Lakehead University in Orillia. April 1, 2018 Three talented clinicians facilitate one day of learning! Calling all Singers from community choirs, church choirs, and anyone who just loves to sing. Organized and hosted by the Orillia Vocal Ensemble with the generous support of Choirs Ontario and Lakehead University, Orillia campus, this unique event offers a rare opportunity to work with three talented clinicians in one day! Singers from community choirs, church choirs, and anyone who just loves to sing are all welcome to attend. The day will consist of 4 sessions: during the first 3 sessions, 3 groups of singers (consisting of SATB) take turns in a workshop with each clinician. In the 4th session, all singers and clinicians come together for a grand finale! Accessible venue. Lunch and snacks included in the registration fee of $50. You may register through Eventbrite - Choral Gold 2018 will feature: Mark Sirett, Melissa Lalonde, and Robin Williams. Dr. Mark Sirett - The Composer s Voice Dr. Mark Sirett, noted Canadian composer and conductor, reveals his compositional process that will promote greater meaning and understanding to performers! Using his arrangement of Leezie Lindsay, a charming traditional Scottish folk song, Mark will illustrate creative techniques in storytelling through music. Melissa Lalonde - African Vocal Music The vocal music of Africa is as wonderfully diverse as the people who call this continent home. In this workshop, singers will explore traditional Zulu vocal music in order to discover some of the ways in which African song is unified: through oral tradition, colourful vocal production, internal rhythm, and movement. Dr. Robin Williams - Vocal Boot Camp Using a piece by Cherubini, Veni, Jesu Amour Mi, Dr. Williams will present an intense session of the basics of singing according to the Italian School, commonly referred to as bel canto. Dr. Williams has received his doctorate in musicology at the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music in Rome. He is currently the music director of newchoir in Toronto.

12 The Orillia Concert Association will begin selling subscriptions for the season in April and once again is offering free tickets to its final concert of the current season for new subscribers to next year's season. A subscription for all five concerts is available for only $90 ($30 for students). For over 70 years, the Orillia Concert Association has presented beautiful, Take Five professional music that has enriched and inspired musical audiences in Orillia. Their last concert of the season will be on Sunday, May 6, at 2:30 p.m. at the Orillia Opera House, featuring perennial favourites Kerry Stratton and the Toronto Concert Orchestra. The OCA audience has enjoyed Mr. Stratton and his talented, versatile orchestra as a regular part of each season for over 20 years, and can look forward to another Kerry Stratton extravaganza Arkady Yanivker featuring show tunes from the stage and movies: Raiders of the Lost Ark, Sound of Music, Porgy and Bess, Les Miserables, West Side Story, Warsaw Concerto and more.
