2 2 Note rom the Arranger Portuguese: IPA: English: Tava durumindo cangoma me chamou [ ta va du ru mĩ do kã go ma mi ʃa mow] I was asleep and cangoma (the drum) called to me Portuguese: Disse, levanta, povo, cativeiro já acabou. IPA: [ dʃi si le vã ta po vo ka tʃi vejru ʒa ka bow] English: Saying, rise, people, slavery (captivity) is over. The word "cangoma" comes rom a Bantu language and means drum. The text is written in a Portuguese dialect, with words slightly dierent rom the conventional language. This song celebrates the end o slavery, a regime that brought much oppression to Aricans and their descendants who were brought to Brazil. On May 13, 1888, Princess Isabel signed the Lei Áurea, which decreed the end o slavery in Brazil. It is important to remember that the signing o a law or a decree does not necessarily means the end o oppression. Traditional Perc. Joshua Dekaney This rhythm should be played with two hands on congas, djembe, tubanos, cajon,or tom-toms with contrasting tones o high and low. The player can also add slaps on the accents and bass tones or the low drum part. Reverse the sticking or let handed player. The player should add variations within this rhythm, making clear distinction between tones and accents, while phrasing with the voices. Note the extra bar o the phrase at the key change transitions o m. 53 and m. 70. About the Arranger Dr. Lon Beery is a vocal music educator at Spry Middle School in Webster, New York. Prior to returning to public school teaching, he was an Assistant Proessor o Music Education at Syracuse University. Dr. Beery has also taught Choral Arranging at the Eastman School o Music. He is a requent guest choral conductor, working especially with middle school choruses. In 2009, he was named the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra's Choral Music Educator o the Year. In January 2013, he served as the vocal music headliner or the Michigan Music Conerence. He has also served as the Eastern Division ACDA Middle School Repertoire and Standards Chair. Dr. Beery has written several articles related to General Music and Choral Music education which have appeared in the Music Educators Journal and the Choral Journal. He has presented sessions at state, regional, and national conerences o NAME and ACDA.
