3 FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY Tuesday, April 10 Reception for FOL Members 6:30 PM Business Meeting 7:00 PM Guest speaker 7:15 PM Join us for the Friends of the Bismarck Public Library s annual meeting. Our guest speaker will be Jason Matthews, consultant, teacher, lifelong reader, and library advocate. Jason owns and operates JM Strategies, a firm specializing in public relations, strategic planning, and public affairs. He teaches as an adjunct political science instructor at Bismarck State College. Since 2011, Jason has taught courses on American history and politics for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). Active in the community, Jason is vice president of the Fort Abraham Lincoln Foundation, a member of the Bismarck Rotary Club, a past president of the Friends of the Bismarck Public Library, and currently serves as the citizen member of the North Dakota Library Coordinating Council. Jason received a bachelor s degree in political science from the University of North Dakota and master s degree in management from the University of Mary. The business meeting and speaker are open to the general public. The Friends of the Library are on Facebook! Like us at FriendsoftheLibraryBismarck/ The Friends of the Library would like to extend a huge thanks to all of our member volunteers who gave their time to help make our recent Spring Used Book Sale a success. It takes hundreds of volunteer hours to make the book sale happen, and we couldn t do it without you! The spring sale raised an amazing total of over $23,000, which will be utilized to fund special projects and programs at the Library. Thanks also to all of the book lovers who shopped at the sale! Celtic Guitarist Jerry Barlow Monday, June 11, 7:00 PM Meeting Room A Free and open to all ages Acclaimed Celtic fingerstyle guitarist Jerry Barlow is a virtuoso musician and world-class storyteller. His repertoire is composed of a synthesis of traditional music from the British Isles and his own original Celticinspired compositions. Barlow s music transports the listener across time and space on an imaginary journey to a rustic Irish fishing village or the misty Scottish Highlands, or an enchanted English forest. Barlow brings the songs alive by sharing the history, legend, and humor behind the music. The History of Blues in America Monday, June 25, 5:00 PM Meeting Room A Free and open to all ages This one-hour program covers the history, influence, and impact of American blues music through songs, stories, and historical facts. It is led by music historian and acclaimed guitarist Joey Leone, along with two other musicians. Over his long career, Joey has toured as a sideman guitar player for many high-profile artists including Etta James, The Coasters, Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett, Chaka Khan, and many more. 4 Spring

Try to escape a haunted house, stop a global pandemic, or become the best ninja delivery person in your company! Come join us to learn new and exciting tabletop games. Sat. Apr. 28 1:00-3:00 PM Teen HQ Show off your skills against other teens and compete for prizes! We play a variety of games throughout the year. All skill levels are welcome. As childhood friends growing up in Denver Colorado, Joe Mailander and Justin Lansing were always exploring the outdoors. Now, as the GRAMMY Award-winning Okee Dokee Brothers, they have put this passion for the outdoors at the heart of their Americana Folk music. Joe and Justin record and perform family music with a goal to inspire children and their parents to get outside and get creative. They believe this can motivate kids to gain a greater respect for the natural world, their communities, and themselves. FREE TICKETS may be obtained at the Children s Information Desk at the Library beginning May 1. 5 Personal enrichment for all Friday, June 1: 10:00 AM-3:00 PM North Dakota Heritage Center Join us for our annual kick-off to summer reading at the ND Heritage Center. This year's music-centered theme is Libraries Rock! Highlights include a return visit from Colorado children's musician Steve Weeks. Sign up for summer reading and enjoy the activities provided for the day. This event is free to attend. (A low-cost lunch will be available for purchase.) Thursdays: Apr. 26, May 31, June 28 3:30 PM Story Room Children ages 8+ meet to build with LEGO bricks. Junior Makers ages 5-7 are welcome with a caregiver aged 12+. The Library has a collection of LEGO bricks and minifigures for children to use. Please leave your own at home. There s always a lot going on at the Library! Whether you re interested in mysteries or romance, new titles in history, cooking, fiction for kids, new movies & music, and much more, New Book Alerts is the place to find out what s new at the Library. To access New Book Alerts, click on New Items under the Research tab on the Library s website. If you re looking for an outdoor adventure this spring, stop by the Library and check out a North Dakota State Park pass. The pass will grant you free vehicle entry into any one of North Dakota s fantastic state parks. Would you like to try your hand at fishing while you re out exploring? The Library also lends fishing poles and children s life jackets. Fishing poles come complete with a small tackle box filled with everything you need to snag a few keepers. Did you know you can check out art prints at the Library? We have a collection of over 70 art prints available for checkout, including originals. Art prints check out for 60 days, and there is a limit of three per card. Stop by and see our gallery, and take home a work of art to brighten up the walls of your home or office. The Library now has board games for checkout, thanks to funding from the Bismarck Library Foundation. Board games check out for seven days, and there is a limit of two board game loans per library card. We have a great selection of games for families and players of all ages. Bring home a classic board game like Battleship, Sorry, Clue, or The Game of Life, or try a new favorite, such as Ticket to Ride, Pandemic, Yeti In My Spaghetti, or Stuffed Fables. The board game collection is located on the main level of the Library near the Information Desk and the teen collection. You can also find all board game titles listed in our library catalog. Join us for Board Game Day, Saturday, April 21 at 1:00 PM in Meeting Room C. Learn a new game or bring one to teach or share. All ages are welcome, but children aged 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult. All you need is your library card!
