1 Indiana Library Free Summer 2016 More than 100 Years of Service! Issue 2, Volume 19 Director s Letter Let the Games Begin! T his year s Summer Reading program, Ready, Set, Read! is all about games and gaming. What can games do for you? Games can be social, they can be thought producing, creative, stimulating, engaging and just plain fun! Games of strategy can help you develop better ways of thinking things through. Games of chance can teach you about making better choices. Trivia games are a great way to help you think quickly, and word and spelling games can help you explore languages and skills you didn t know you would need. We can be creative in designing new games or playing the old ones in new ways. Sports are often their own reward as we develop skills, strategy, team support and help our bodies stay in shape. We are supporting the WalkWorks program with Indiana Borough to encourage walking as a social experience in and around the library. Fitness is a major part of our activities this year as we join up with Yellow Creek State Park on programs for outdoor fun. We will kick off our kids program with a day at Mack Park on June 14 th at 10 am. Come for a variety of games and activities, then we can head to the pool and have a free afternoon swim thanks to the generosity of the YMCA and Mack Park. Registration is required that day for the pool, so please bring a photo ID with you. At the end of our summer program we will have a wrapup event at Yellow Creek State Park, so watch for details! In between, we ll have some great weekly children s programs. See page 2 for more details. Calling all teens! Come to the library and Get in the Game this summer. Tuesdays at 3 pm we ll have everything from games and gaming, to creating wearables, to crafts and a few new challenges. And yes, there will be summer treats involved! Pass the word and bring friends. Also a reminder that we have games for use in the library if you want to spend an afternoon in the AC. You can take home movies, download music and, of course, find a great read in our awesome YA collection. For our adult readers, we have some great summer activities just for you. Read, log and win. Submit each title you read from June 1 to July 31 to enter a raffle for a FREE Kindle Fire! Details inside and on our website. New adult club offerings this summer include a club for photographers, or those hoping to be, and our new Taster s Club, a monthly experience of trying new recipes and cookbooks. Read, cook, and share! A new feature for those beyond our service area who would like to join in the summer fun, we now offer a temporary, 3- month library card for $10. So this summer, let the games begin! Sizzling Summer Used Used Book Book Sale Sale Saturday, June 11th 10 am - 3 pm Great beach and backyard reads to enjoy this summer! 3 June 21 - July 26 3 Teen Summer Reading 2016 Tuesdays at 3:00 in the Community Room Win a Kindle Fire! Adults - this summer you can win prizes for reading books! Join the fun and log in the titles you are reading this summer. The grand prize is a Kindle Fire! Other prizes include t-shirts, pens and more. Register on our website for the online reading log, beginning June 1st. You can log books you ve read from the library or downloaded from OverDrive. Winners will be drawn randomly at the end of July. You get one entry for each book read, so the more you read, the better your chances of winning! Read, log, and win prizes! Click on the Summer Reading tab at our website to sign up for the reading log. Have Tech Questions? Reserve a Librarian! Have a question about your e -reader? Need help setting up an account? Our librarians are here to help with a program called Reserve a Librarian! When you place a librarian on reserve, you will schedule a 15 or 30 minute period with your librarian for one-on-one time to help you with the topic of your choice. Reserve a Librarian will be available from 10 am - 3 pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Teen Summer Reading is in special events and read for create yummy smoothies. Refreshments will be served. for students going into grades es in the library this spring, but one thing that hasn t changed is how much we appreciate our fantastic volunteer shelving team! Local residents and IUP students donated 240 hours from January to April helping us keep our shelves neat and organized during the renovations. This weekly, long-term service opportunity is perfect for retirees ready for new challenges, Honors College students seeking a community service partnership, or anyone who loves literacy and libraries. Details about the Volunteer Shelver Program can be found online at node/272/, and applications are available at the front desk. We are also searching for Outreach Volunteers. These volunteers will be called on to assist staff with programs and events both inside and outside of the library. Evening and Saturday availability is essential. For our first meeting, pick your favorite cookbook, make something from it, and bring your yummy creation to the meeting. We will share our favorite cookbooks and recipes as we sample each other s dishes, then we ll vote on the cookbook for next month s meeting. One of only a handful of novels published by black women during the 1940s, the story of ambitious Cleo Judson is a long-time cult classic. Adult Summer Reading 2016 Sample Our New Cook Book Club: IFL Taster s Club Like a book club, members meet to discuss a specific book, in this case a cookbook, and enjoy each other's company. Unlike a book club, where the host is in charge of providing refreshments, meetings are a potluck meal, and the dishes come from the cookbook in question. Members don't have to be experienced cooks; enthusiasm for cooking is more important, so both experienced cooks and beginners are invited to join. Meetings are the first Wednesday of each month at noon. July 7 pm & July 11 am IFL Book Club -- All the Light We Cannot See, by Anthony Doerr. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, this beautifully written bestseller tells the dual stories of a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France during the devastation of World War II. July 11 am Forever Young Book Club The Subtle Knife, by Philip Pullman. In this stunning sequel to The Golden Compass, Lyra finds herself in a shimmering, haunted otherworld Cittagazze, where soul-eating Specters stalk the streets and wingbeats of distant angels sound against the sky. Don Tillman has crafted a pathologically micromanaged life but can t seem to score a second date. After launching his Wife Project, Don meets Rosie, a maddeningly disorganized bartender who s so wrong for him she s perfect. August 26 at 11 am Forever Young Book Club The Amber Spyglass, by Philip Pullman. Book 3 in His Dark Materials trilogy. With help from an armored bear and two tiny spies, Lyra and Will must journey to a gray-lit world where no living soul has ever gone. August 27, 10:30 am Classics Book Club Voices from Chernobyl, by Svetlana Alexeivich. Winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, Voices from Chernobyl is the first book to present personal accounts of the worst nuclear reactor accident in history. Journalist Alexievich interviewed hundreds of people affected by the meltdown and reveals their fear, anger, and uncertainty. 4

5 Introducing the IFL Photography Club Indiana Free Library is proud to announce our IFL Photography Club. Whether you are new at photography, an experienced hobbyist, or a professional, we invite you to join us for the opportunity to discuss all aspects of photography, learn from other photographers, and share your photos. Don t have a DSLR? Don t worry. The group will meet on the third Wednesday of the month from 7:00-8:30 pm in June 15 the Community Room July 20 & August 17 on the second floor of the library. Mindfulness: Science and Practice Creative Writing Club Who lives, who dies, who tells your story? Tell your story at our Creative Writing Club. We meet the last Monday of the month at 7 pm in the library s community room. Summer meetings are June 27th, July 25th, and August 22nd. For more information, contact Helen at publib.ill@gmail.com. The claims for Mindfulness range from improving stress tolerance to reducing anxiety and depression to boosting the immune system. But just what is it and does it really work? Join Dr. Donald Robertson, IUP Emeritus Professor of Psychology, on Monday, June 20th at 7 pm as he introduces the basic elements of Mindfulness and provides a science-based description and evaluation of what, if anything, Mindfulness can do, and whether those methods are really any better than other techniques. Dr. Robertson, Ph.D., retired from the Psychology Department of IUP in 2013 and is a clinical psychologist who most recently was Director of the Center for Applied Psychology at IUP. Free. TalkAbout: Coffee & Conversation TalkAbout is back after a winter break! Join Tom Harris at 7:00 pm in the second floor reading area as we dive into lively discussion and snacks. June 6: Life Transitions: June is a month of new beginnings: graduations, weddings, etc. We will talk about some of the most important new beginnings we ve experienced or are looking forward to experiencing. August 1: Humor: Is laughter really the best medicine? When you re smiling, does the whole world smile with you? We ll discuss the value of humor. Be sure to bring your favorite joke to share. Acoustic Jam Sessions June 25, July 9, August 20 10:30 am - 12:30 pm Bring your instrument and join Louise Bem and other music enthusiasts on three Saturday mornings for Acoustic Jams. Each member of the group will have an opportunity to lead. When appropriate, leaders should supply music for the other players. The type of music played will be dependent on the participants.
