We are excited to usher in a new year full of new possibilities and fun for everyone! Read on to see how the library will be kicking off the new year. Winter Reading is back! Lasting from January 2 March 19, turn in slips for each book you ve read to receive a prize every week! To top it off, each slip will be entered into the grand prize drawing at the end of the event. The flyer can be seen on page 3. Don t miss it! On January 8, the library will be offering training sessions all day on how to use OverDrive, our free ebook collection! If you want to know how to access ebooks on your device, stop in any time or call us for an appointment! Check out page 2 for more information. You won t want to miss our 5 th Annual Golf (Fore!) the Library in February. With indoor putt-putt (yes, inside the library), a silent auction, snacks, and mini-games for everyone, this is the library s most popular and well-received fundraiser. 2 P a g e 2 G r e e n e G a b If you got a tablet or ereader over the holiday and want to know how to load it up with free ebooks from the library, Bloomfield -Eastern Greene County Public Library Monday, January 8: 10:00am 7:00pm Drop in any time between those hours or call ahead and schedule a time! (812) When Bloomfield School District is closed for weather related issues, the Library will generally be closed the FIRST day Bloomfield Schools are closed. If conditions improve, we may open for reduced hours. We will evaluate road conditions and determine our hours on a day-by-day basis after this. If Bloomfield Schools have a delay, the Library will still open; however, morning Story Hours will be canceled. There are times when the Library may need to close early due to inclement weather. When the Library does close, we will state this on our website, our Facebook, our Twitter feed, and post announcements on WFIU, WTHI, & WTWO websites. Please stay informed! Our phone message will not change, but we will backdate items and check the voic for renewals.

4 Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library has been awarded a Community Read grant of $1,000 from Indiana Humanities to participate in a statewide read of the classic novel Frankenstein. More than 60 other communities will be reading the book as part of One State /One Story: Frankenstein. The first program scheduled for the grant is being planned for Saturday, February 24 at 2:00 PM. George Walker from WFIU radio plans to come and facilitate a book discussion. The library will have a limited number of books on hand for patrons. Stay tuned for details on when the books will be available, as well as other events being planned for One State /One Story: Frankenstein is an initiative designed by Indiana Humanities, in partnership with the Indiana State Library and Indiana Center for the Book, to encourage Hoosiers to read the classic novel as it turns 200 in One State/One Story: Frankenstein has been made possible in part by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Griffin Songs of Experience U2 Real movies, really reviewed by Adult Services Librarian, Kimberly Porter We all love food, so how could we possibly be throwing nearly half of it in the trash? In Just Eat It, that s the question filmmakers and food lovers Jen and Grant seek to answer as they dive in on their quest to survive only on foods that would otherwise be thrown away. That s right! No more grocery shopping. No more grocery bills. Only consume foods that are being discarded. Wow! What an interesting challenge! After viewing this film, I think there are three important points that I have come to realize. First, I realize how thankful I am for the food and earthly items that I am able to afford. I am so very thankful that I do not have to be dependent on someone else whether by providing for me through a food pantry or through a dumpster with the food they are not using. I cannot imagine the hardship of knowing that my only meal for the day may come from a dumpster. Jen and Grant even note this throughout the film. They locate several dumpsters from local restaurants and groceries in their town mention how sometimes they arrive too late. Someone else has already raided it. Secondly, I learned how much food is truly going to waste. Several times they show dumpsters overflowing with containers of hummus that is still a week away from the expiration date but has been thrown out to make room for newer product. Another time they become aware of a pizza place that has discarded pizza toppings because they were only using it for a film shoot, not for actual consumption. Finally, I realized how much more I can do to help those in need. This film brought awareness to just how much food is being thrown away, most of it long before it s expired, and I m saddened that markets and restaurants aren t seeking out food pantries or soup kitchens that might be able to make use of the product. Each of us can do our part to reduce the amount of food we waste. I also encourage you to seek out your local food pantries and donation centers to not only limit your waste, but to help those in need. I highly recommend this documentary so you can see for yourself how much food is going to waste! I promise you will think twice about throwing out the leftovers!
