2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission The Richmond Choral Society is a vocally accomplished ensemble that presents high-caliber choral music of many different genres that bridges cultural differences and draws people together in celebration of the art of music. Background Sixty-nine years ago, one hundred of Richmond's best singers gathered on Monday nights to rehearse selections from a spectrum of musical sources- the classical masters, hymns, spirituals, folk arrangements, novelty songs and contemporary works. On April 29, 1947, the singers soon to be known as the Richmond Choral Society-premiered those nineteen pieces in a concert at the WRVW Theater on East Broad Street. After launching the group to accolades from music critics, Dr. James Rawlings Sydnor passed the baton in 1949 to Alton L. Howell Sr., who served as director until his death in Anne Carr Regan then took over. Under the leadership of both, the Richmond Choral Society continued to develop, performing alone and with other groups, many of the great choral works. Mrs. Regan expanded the group's repertoire to include theater and popular music. Under the direction of Thomas A. Williams from , the Richmond Choral Society continued to chart new territory. In 2004, it presented a landmark performance of Ernest Bloch's Avodath Hakodesh (Sacred Service). The Richmond premiere of the Yizkor Requiem in 2010 marked the high point of the debut season for the Richmond Choral Society's newest artistic director, Markus Compton. He is a dynamic young conductor who brings a wealth of experience, knowledge and creativity to the leadership position. Under his guidance, we expect to continue the tradition of excellence that has marked our long and proud history. Impact Accomplishments-Season Our Masterworks Concert of Lenten Reflections by Antonin Dvorak continued our tradition of partnering with established local soloists, including Pablo Talamante. Our June 2013 concert, "In Word and Song: Great Poetry and Great Music" included a partnership with Richmond Shakespeare, continuing our mission of partnering with other arts organizations from the Richmond area. The fiscal year ended with our largest profit in the last three years and an increase of more than 100% from the prior fiscal year.goals for Season To end fiscal year under budget. To continue our quest towards our vision statement: The Richmond Choral Society strives to be a premiere ensemble committed to excellence in performance of a diverse repertoire that will create opportunities throughout the community for fostering choral arts appreciation and education in affordable and accessible venues. Successfully transition our home performance base from St. Mark's Episcopal in Richmond to Trinity Lutheran in Henrico County. Achievement of this vision is accomplished by: Constant pursuit of new and challenging experiences in choral music. Outreach and education, particularly to student groups that would not normally have an opportunity to experience a variety of choral repertoire. Annual comprehensive auditions for all members. Rigorous weekly rehearsals. To participate in CultureWorks CultureXpo 2014, which will increase our presence in the community. Attendance levels remain constant to growing from prior year. Needs Identify additional funding sources to support our middle concert "A Musical Journey Through the Civil War" and close our current projected deficit for the year. To recruit non-singing board members who will bring a much needed depth of insight from the greater community of Richmond to our Board. To identify and recruit young professionals to join the group as singers and board participants Volunteers to help with specific short-term projects. 4 Programs Programs Great Choral Masterpieces Description For our Masterworks Concert on March 23, 2014 we are performing a top ten list of great choral masterpieces, crowd sourced from our audience. Patrons of RCS have been able to vote over the last several months on the pieces that they wanted to hear performed. 7 Management Executive Director/CEO Executive Director Term Start June Mr. Markus J. Compton Experience Markus J. Compton has been associated with the Richmond Choral Society since This is his seventh season as Artistic Director after serving as rehearsal accompanist for the previous five years.holding degrees in Music Education and Piano Accompanying from George Mason University, Mr. Compton is no stranger to the music scene in metropolitan Washington, D.C. and Richmond. Before beginning his tenure with the Richmond Choral Society, Mr. Compton served as the Assistant Conductor and Pianist for the Fairfax Choral Society and Pianist for the National Men's Chorus. He also worked as staff accompanist, vocal coach and lecturer at George Mason University. Mr. Compton has assisted such distinguished conductors as Anton Armstrong, Thomas Beveridge, Jerry Blackstone, Kevin Fenton, Joseph Martin, Don Neuen, Doreen Rao and Andre Thomas. He has performed at the National Gallery of Art, the White House and in a collaborative recital with Peter Schikele (PDQ Bach).Currently, Mr. Compton is the Director of Music and Pianist at HebronPresbyterian Church, in Manakin-Sabot, Virginia. He oversees the Sanctuaryand Youth choirs, as well as the Music in the Countryside' recital series. Compton also serves on the staff at Collegiate School where he teaches private piano.
