1 Bach Beethoven & Brahms Society of Boston Inc General Information 26 Davis Avenue Suite 3B Brookline, MA (617) Website Organization Contact Steven Lipsitt Year of Incorporation 216 1
2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission Statement The mission of the Bach, Beethoven, & Brahms Society is to present imaginatively programmed concerts to a wide and diverse public, forging a connection between performers and audience. Central to our mission is our Signature Series of orchestra concerts played in historic Faneuil Hall by our professional instrumentalists. Other series will present chamber music, new music, and vocal music at other venues. BB&B also has a residency mentorship at Boston Arts Academy (the magnet arts high school of the Boston Public School system), holding open rehearsals, masterclasses, and question-and-answer sessions with BAA students. Background Statement BB&B was formed by the orchestra musicians and conductor, after Boston Classical Orchestra suddenly dissolved. Music director Steven Lipsitt learned of BCO's bankruptcy filing February 1st, and by noon on February 2nd had rallied the players, formed a board, filed all necessary IRS, Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth, and Massachusetts Attorney General forms to incorporate as a 51(c)(3). BB&B played concerts on March 6th and April 17th (taking over the dates, venue, soloists, and repertoire that BCO had abandoned). The arts & culture press, and an enthusiastic public, welcomed the emergence of the new orchestra (Boston's newest professional chamber orchestra). Impact Statement BB&B incorporated on February 2, 216 and played its first orchestral concert on March 6, 216. This was a "feel-good" story (in the words of our arts industry peers) about a group of musicians banding together to keep a beloved musical enterprise alive. (The conductor and orchestra musicians had been employed as contractors by Boston Classical Orchestra, whose board of trustees abruptly (and without discussion with the musicians) filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on February 1, 216.) BB&B essentially "rescued" the March 6th and April 17th programs, taking over the dates, repertoire, and soloists that BCO had abandoned. The resilience of BB&B's efforts was widely noted in The Boston Globe, WBUR's The ARTery blog, and the (Metrowest) TAB newspapers. Needs Statement 1. Capacity-building: board recruitment, fundraising & development staffing, marketing staffing & resources. $35,. 2. General operating expenses: current budgeting expects 5% of budget to come from subscription and single-ticket sales --- a bit high by industry standards. Individual, corporate, & foundation grants will need to perform well. $35,. 3. Administration support: QuickBooks, bookkeeper services, accounting services. $25,. 4. Website redesign and management. $15,. 5. Acoustical drapes/banners for Faneuil Hall. $1,. CEO/Executive Director Statement Our Faneuil Hall venue offers an intimacy & immediacy not available on other orchestra concert series; and the historicity and architectural splendor of the hall add additional charm & atmosphere. The palpable enthusiasm of the orchestra musicians and soloists in sharing their artistry, and conductor Steven Lipsitt's comments from the podium, make these concerts especially vivid, enjoyable, engaging events. 2
3 Board Chair Statement BB&B was launched with abundant good will, enthusiasm, musical professionalism, and a strong desire to serve the several hundred concert-goers who already enjoy orchestra concerts in Faneuil Hall, and to draw newer and more diverse audiences as well. The musical artistry is world-class, and is the most powerful attraction of the group to subscribers and donors. The guest solo artists and choice of repertoire strengthen the appeal of attending concerts and volunteering to help guide the organization. We already have the enthusiastic support of ArtsBoston, staff at the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Boston Musicians' Association, many members of the Boston music press, and several hundred concertgoers. Our biggest and most immediate challenge is to build a board, establish a track record of successful grantsmanship, and generally leverage the goodwill and interest to stabilize our business plan and begin to spread our wings.
