Teens will have a kick-off movie event, Doctor Who, on Friday evening, May 30, after the library is closed. Then the Children s kick-off will be on Saturday morning, May 31, and the Adult kick-off event, a presentation about synchronous fireflies and an exhibit about firefly- and butterfly-friendly gardens, will be Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. Throughout June and July there will be multiple events, activities, and fun and, of course, lots of reading! And reading can be in e-book or audio formats, too! We look forward to seeing you at the library! MUSIC: Thursdays in August, 7 p.m., Hot Summer Nights Concert Series at the library! EVENTS: Phone (865) or Friday, May 30, 6:30 to 9 p.m., Doctor Who showing of an after-library-hours movie for Teen Movie Night in the Sharon Lawson Room. Enter the library at the door to the Sharon Lawson Room by going to the sidewalk that runs parallel to the Employee Parking Lot at the library. This movie will be the kick-off event for the Teen Summer Reading Program. Stay tuned for more activities, events, fun and games during June and July! o Saturday, May 31, Adult Summer Reading Program, Literary Elements. Win at Literary Elements bingo by reading books for chances to win prizes such as gift cards or certificates to area restaurants for weekly prizes and grand prizes. Pick up rules and register at the Circulation Desk of the library. o Saturday, May 31, 2 p.m., Synchronous Fireflies presentation by Becky Nichols, Entomologist with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Service, will be the Kick-off Event for the Adult Summer Reading Program. Nichols will discuss many of the species of fireflies that occur in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, as well as in surrounding areas. She will cover their ecology and behavior as well as how to identify different species based on flash patterns. Of course, the main discussion will be regarding the synchronous firefly and how it became so famous. The program will be in the Sharon Lawson Room. For further information about the Adult Summer Reading Program, stay tuned for more activities, events, fun and games!

Friday, June 13, 7 p.m., a showing of the movie, Gravity, starring Sandra Bullock will be in the Sharon Lawson Room of the Library after the library is closed, so enter the library through the outside door to the Sharon Lawson Room - on the Employee Parking Lot end of the building. Monday, June 16, 7 p.m., History of the Gallup Poll: the Inside Story will be presented by Alison Gallup, daughter of George Gallup, III, and granddaughter of George Gallup, Jr. Gallup, Jr., developed the survey methodology for the opinion poll, and Gallup, III, ran the Gallup Poll surveys as a business for many years, even continuing to serve as Chairman for nearly two decades after he sold the business. Alison will discuss the history of the poll, its significance in politics and other studies and the impact on citizens. She will also talk about her family and share anecdotes of life as the daughter/granddaughter of the George Gallups, Jr. and Sr. The presentation will be in the Sharon Lawson Room of the library. Tuesday, June 24, o 6:30 p.m., Blount County Friends of the Library Annual Meeting chaired by Jerry Wagner, President, in the Reading Rotunda area of the Main Gallery of the Library. o 7 p.m., Drug Abuse and How It Affects Human Trafficking will be presented by Honorable Tammy Harrington, Judge of the Circuit Court, Division 1. This presentation is based upon Judge Harrington s experiences and research as an attorney and as a judge. This program will be in the Reading Rotunda area of the Main Gallery of the Library. Saturday, June 28, 6-9 p.m., Library Exhibit at Alcoa s Freedom Fest. Stop by the library s table before the fireworks at the Alcoa Duck Pond! (NOT at the library). This comedy by William Shakespeare is suitable for the entire family and will be performed by the Tennessee Stage Company, under the direction of Tom Parkhill. Indoors! Air-Conditioned! In the Reading Rotunda of the Main Gallery. Friday, August 1, 7 p.m., the showing of the movie Pacific Rim. A science fiction movie of fantastical imagery and irrepressible fun. That way you can be assured of personalized assistance in setting up accounts to access R.E.A.D.S. so that you can access the vast array of e-books available for free downloading to the public through the library's website. You can learn how to download e-books or audiobooks to your e-reader device. For the help session, you will download a book to your e-reader device, so Bring: your e-reader device (fully charged), library card in good standing, account user name and password, Adobe account, and password, Kindle account, and password. COMPUTER COURSES Registration Required: For more information, go to the Blount County Public Library Reference Desk or call (865) or , ext. 4. Basic Introductory Computer Classes: Basic computer classes are offered, free, at the library: Meet the Mouse, and Internet Searching. Each of these one-time classes lasts up to two hours and is limited to an enrollment of 14 people, but students may take the classes more than once. No classes will be held in June and July. Microsoft Computer Courses: Blount County Adult Education teachers offer computer courses at the Blount County Public Library. All Microsoft multi-session courses offered at the library will have a fee of $25 per course or $40 for some evening courses. These courses are offered during the year: Welcome to the World of Computers, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher. Classes meet in the Computer Lab. Registration is required for all classes by visiting the library s Reference Desk or calling the library at or , ext. 4. The fee (cash or check only) is due at the first class session. Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 This class will provide students with the skills needed to produce a professional-looking presentation. Topics include editing, outlining, drawing, graphing, images, and presentation management functions. Students need to bring a flash drive to class. Pre-School Story Hours: All Story Hours Have New Starting Time of 10:30 a.m. Story hours throughout each week offer different levels of story content and activities. Programs vary week to week, sometimes presenting stories, rhymes, puppets, music and movement, coloring, or crafts. Patrons are encouraged to visit several different story hours to find the size group, story level, and presenter that your child enjoys and feels most comfortable with for story hour. Tuesday and Friday, 10:30 a.m., Tales of Wonder Story Hour for ages three thru five are presented by Nancy Allee (Tuesday), and Becca Baker or Jean Closz (Friday).
